A Nigerian man from the East, Ikechukwu Duke Ashiedu, alias Saviola, has been inducted into the United States (U.S.) Navy, Igbere TV reports.

Igbere TV reports that Ashiedu is an alumnus of the University of Benin, and one-time Director of Sports of the school’s Students Union Government (SUG).

The U.S. Navy is the naval warfare service branch of the United States Armed Forces and one of the seven uniformed services of the United States.

It is the most capable navy in the world and world's largest aircraft carrier fleet, with eleven in service, and two new carriers under construction.

With 336,978 personnel on active duty and 101,583 in the Ready Reserve, 290 deployable combat vessels and more than 3,700 operational aircraft, the U.S. navy is the third-largest air force in the world, after the U.S. Air Force and the U.S. Army.

Congratulations to him!!!

Meaning Ashiedu is a university graduate.

But a university graduate as a junior sailor?

Personally, I don't really see any big deal here o.

For the unintelligent ignoramuses who might start disturbing my mention, there is a difference between officers and sailors. Officers are university graduates while sailors are not.

The man with 3 yellow bars on his shoulders is the only officer in the 2nd picture, the rest are sailors.

Wrong.

The military frowns on commissioning university graduates as they come with enough baggages.

University graduates are only shortlisted for short service, civilian reserve force or drafted during wartime into the officer cadre.

The Military has their own college for training officers.

Pls which military are you talking about?

Because I know two graduates from my school commissioned into the Nigerian military.

And for the college training military officers, Nigeria has NDA Kaduna solely for this purpose.

I also understand they can convert to be of same status with the NDA trained officers.

Any university graduate you see serving as an officer is under short service.

They will never get command positions and are limited to professional roles e.g. Medical, Engineer, accounting, etc.

West Point is the only institution reserved for training cadet officers in the US although like Sandhurst in the UK, not every graduant automatically gets commissioned as both West Point and Sandhurst cater to foreign students.

To get into West Point, you must be referred to by a serving US Senator.

The folly of commissioning University graduates as full commissioned officers can be seen with the likes of Ifeajuna and Ojukwu, who both graduated from university before joining the military. Ironsi even complained about having university graduates saying; "I asked for soldiers and they gave me graduates". He was right because these officers joined the military with their indoctrinated Marxist mindset and the rest is history.

Oga, by Short Service, you mean their stay in the military will be for short period, and I have told you already that they get converted to have same status as their NDA trained counterparts.

Again, when you say holding command, short service officers are holding commands in the army very well. Some of them are given the command of battalions and even higher.

When you talk about professional, I think you are getting it very wrong. Check their requirements when they advertise for recruitment, it cuts across almost all courses studied in the universities.

I also know they are taken into all the corps of the army such as infantry, armour, these are the ones I know.

The highest rank a short service officer can attain is Colonel and this is reserved only to senior professionals without going to War College.

The highest tenure is 10yrs also.

And they are never given command positions in whatever form as they are not trained military strategists and soldiers but rather occupy only non-command positions.

Oga, a converted short service officer can get to major general. The army has female Maj generals, the navy also has femal admirals while the air force also has female vice marshals. The question now is, are these females graduates of NDA? Is it not recently NDA start taking females to pass through the four yrs in NDA?

I'm sure you know these females joined through short service, but what you don't know is that they later converted.

I repeat, a converted short service officer has exactly same status as his NDA counterparts.

Pls are you telling me these ones joined as NDA graduates?

tender your congratulations or shut the Bleep up. Here in Nigeria here, graduates are selling bread and satchet water. many have been sacked due to Bihari's poor economic policies. forget big grammar and congratulate him.

This information is wrong, very wrong. A SSC can go beyond a colonel in fact most do.

The highest tenure is 15yrs if the officer doesn't convert.

Your idea of short service is warped, Short service is divided into 2: SSC and DSSC.

SSC: are full military combatants, who fight wars and are on the frontlines.

DSSC: are the military professionals e.g lawyers, doctors etc

SSC officers hold command, in fact they are placed in charge of platoons, battalions and formations. Lots of them are in the north east engaging BH.

Both SSC and DSSC officers can convert so as to be eligible to spend more than 15yrs
