Government should ban the use of cooking gazes in Nigeria until all have been educated on how best to use it without having explosions,

The only thing that makes me scared about gas cookers is igniting the oven. That thing makes my heart skip. grin I've still not grown over it.

1. Change your hose every 6 months (It's not expensive)

2. If your cylinder is getting corroded from the bottom... Change it

3. Keep your cylinder outside

4. When not in use, shut the valve

5. When in doubt... Contact a professional gas dealer

The cylinder to hose connection used in Nigeria is poorly designed. If you can get a cylinder that has a threaded connection for the hose, then use that. It will ensure that chances of leakage from the cylinder connection is reduced.

The other key issue is the safety system built into the gas burner. The burner should be able to automatically turn off the gas supply to the burner if the flame goes off for any reason. At times when cooking, when boiling liquid splash from the pot into the flame, the flame can go out. If the burner does not have a sensor that than detect that the flame has gone out and cut off the gas supply, you will end up with a kitchen filled with unignited cooking gas, which is a recipe for disaster.

You can easily tell if a burner has this safety feature by looking for the thermocouple probe in the burner head, it is like a pointed needle similar to the electrostatic igniter probe but unlike the igniter probe, it does not have a white ceramic insulator around it.

Fit a propane sensor in your kitchen. If there is a gas leak in the kitchen, the alarm signal from the sensor will alert you.

Please I need more enlightenment on this issue..
This is how I operate mine.
The gas cylinder is always turned OFF but inside kitchen under the Sink far away from the gas cooker. Whenever we want to cook, we turn the gas cylinder ON before putting ON the gas cooker. When we are done, we OFF gas cooker and OFF gas cylinder too.

But I notice that those that place theirs outside the house are always living the gas cylinder ON all the time. When they wanted to cook, they will only ON and OFF the gas cooker inside the house.

So which is safest?

1: Outside the house and the tap is left ON always.

2: Inside the house and far from gas cooker while you ON and OFF the tap when needed.

Am confused..

JubrinElSudan:
Keep the cylinder outside. My former apartment, the landlord made provision for all cylinders to the kept outside

There is no such thing as cooker, instead it is called stove.
Back to question
Use two valves, one inside and the other outside.
The pipe outside should be fixed and made of copper.
The pipe inside should be the flexible type.
Avoid naked flame near cylinder

Keep out of reach of children
Keep gas cylinder outside or far away from burner
Discontinue if you passive any leakage
Service cylinders and burners regularly
Always be mindful of expiry date
Have quick fire fighting devices
And most importantly commit your safety to God after observing your checks

Thanks for your advice. But let me add anything that can hamper your sense of smell should be avoided. No matter how drunk you are, make sure it doesn't affect your senses. If a gas is leaking a normal person should perceive it .

I don't think you get it. I was referring to those gas cookers that come with ovens. The one in my house, the cooker is automatic, but the oven, you'd have to use a long broom stick to ignite it 'cause of the flame pressure.

I don't plan on going for that type of gas cooker and oven when married.

can you please give an example of a gas cooker that has this safety feature?

So the one that does not use external ignition e.g. matches does not explode or it's just less risky?

Avoid horse leakage and make sure the screws are properly right at the edges of the horse, avoid making calls when the cooking gas stove is on.
