We dey in the same shoes man.. I know a guy who came back from work and trust Nepa people na with power outage... So when this guy entered his house, he was perceiving a gas odour and he decided to trail the odur to see where it was coming from and the odur led him to his kitchen. Since there was no light, he taught of turning on the tourch in his smartphone to see how he could stop the leakage and that was it.. Immediately he turned on his phone touch, the gas went boom!! Thanks be to God he didn't die but it left a serious scar on him despite treatments so since that time coupled with other fearful stories I've heared I fear gas pass lion... This story is not a rumor the guy cuts his hair in the same saloon with me. na him use him mouth narrate the incident....

Some fools have been coming to my mention to display their idiocy because of this post.. I wonder what could be their problem.. Is it that they can't read or is it that they can't understand... I clearly stated above that the incident was narrated at a barbers shop where I also go to cut my hair.. I didn't say I was there neither did I read it anywhere on the internet. The guy narrated the story and I believed him... I hate gas enough to doubt him... The guy may be wrong I don't know and I don't care I already learnt one or two from his story but just incase the over sabi ones are doubting abeg experiment it at home, do a video and share the link with me and I promise to delete this whole write up...

Keep gas cylinder far away from burner? What about the ones that the burner is right on top of the cylinder

Pay attention to the hoses!!!!!

A few years ago, we were buying gas way too often. Instead of 2-3 months per bottle (10Kg) it would not last for more than 3 weeks. At first, I was suspecting gas guys of filling bottles with water. HOWEVER... our repairman came once and noticed that the gas regulator releases some sound even when no gas is being used. He figured out that the hose is damaged. Typically, cooking gas STINKS like hell... but the gas we were buying did not have that stuff added at all... Gas was being released in the kitchen. Luckily for us, we had no AC in the kitchen so window was open all the time. If it wasn't, and the concentration of gas reached the right level... then we wanted to cook something and the gas in the kitchen ignited... well, then I would not be here to type this.

Wow!! Stop trying you're already the most foolish person on nairaland... Did you even read my post? I made it clear that I know the guy and he narrated the incident in the barbers shop we both come to cut our hairs... Did I say I was there? Or did I say I read it somewhere? He narrated the story and I believed him.... You could experiment it in your house, do a live video and share it on YouTube and I promise to modify that post... Till then enjoy your title... Fool...

Bros don't mind whosoever that doesn't believe your story, it could be possible because the torch light from the phone is not like an ordinary torch light, it gives a burning sensation even when placed on your skin. The radiation could cause it.

First of all there are two types of gas cylinders one is
1. CAMPING Gas, this is the the you have your burner on the cylinder and comes with various sizes, through this there is no way to keep your cylinder outside, so always keep your cylinder outside mentality is not applicable to this types.
SAFETY USAGE
1. Try to alway use a gas lighter avoid matches if possible. Its like a gun where your hand wont come closer to the cylinder. Gas lighter comes in two types image below, one is refillable other non.
2. Always ensure you lock the burner very well on the cylinder.
3. Always go with the burner for service in each refill
4. Anytime you feel like gas is smelling first thing to cone to your mind is OPEN YOUR WINDOW
5. Try to have a FIRE EXTINGUISHER in your kitchen its important.
6. If you dont have money for 5 above make TOWEL available, with this you can wrap the whole cylinder at once with wet towel in case of fire.
2. GAS STOVE; This is the most recommended For household as you will have your stove connected with A cylinder using a pipe to either Standard mouth or Nido Mouth Regulator.
SAFETY USAGE.
1. Try to keep your cylinder outside and pass the hose pipe through to the stove inside.
2. If your Apartment does not support this, place it under your wash hand basin
3. Try as much as possible to buy Auto-Ignition cooker but if you cant Gas lighter is recommended.
4. Always check your hose pipe regularly at least 6months interval its not cost #200 per yard.
5. Dont make it an habbit to turn on and off your Gas from regulator though its good but you may weak the rubber inside.
6. Always ensure they change the standard rubber on each refill
7. Ensure windows are open if you percieve odur.
All been said it is important to know that 90% of Gas Accident are caused by NEGLIGENCE AND IGNORANCE be smart. And to wrap it up BEFORE YOU ON YOUR GAS ENSURE YOU FIRST OF ALL TRY TO LOCK THE CONTROL KNOB ON EITHER STOVE OR BURNER, DOING THIS YOU WILL KNOW IF YOUR GAS IS LEFT ON OR OFF REGARDLESS OF SMELL OR NOT.

The guy is lucky he survived it. That shouldn't stop you from using gas to cook. Car accidents have killed plenty people and you still use cars. It's safer to keep the cylinder outside..

The safest is putting of cylinder outside and pass the hose through the wall to your cooker....I run a gas shop and i can tell you that negligence is the caused of most gas explosion.....always check the hose time to time for leakage, whenever you are fixing your regulator ensure theirs no leakage, always ask your gas vendor to change the standard rubber whenever you do a refill.

Exactly! The number one source of leakage is that rubber. And if u are a type that keep your cylinder in the kitchen , that is disaster in waiting. Change that rubber regularly, put your cylinder outside and have a functional nose, I think u are ok to use gas. I've been using my cylinder for 8 years with the hose bought same day, no leakage. The only time I got leakage was from that black rubber and since my cylinder is OUTSIDE , there wasn't a problem. DONT EVER KEEP YOUR CYLINDER INDOOR.

Majority of the households keep their cylinders inside the kitchen.
What about the house that has no fence or partially completed fence? How do one manage to keep the cylinder outside in such situation?

Avoid horse leakage and make sure the screws are properly right at the edges of the horse, avoid making calls when the cooking gas stove is on.

1. Change your hose every 6 months (It's not expensive)

2. If your cylinder is getting corroded from the bottom... Change it

3. Keep your cylinder outside

4. When not in use, shut the valve

5. When in doubt... Contact a professional gas dealer

The cylinder to hose connection used in Nigeria is poorly designed. If you can get a cylinder that has a threaded connection for the hose, then use that. It will ensure that chances of leakage from the cylinder connection is reduced.

The other key issue is the safety system built into the gas burner. The burner should be able to automatically turn off the gas supply to the burner if the flame goes off for any reason. At times when cooking, when boiling liquid splash from the pot into the flame, the flame can go out. If the burner does not have a sensor that than detect that the flame has gone out and cut off the gas supply, you will end up with a kitchen filled with unignited cooking gas, which is a recipe for disaster.

You can easily tell if a burner has this safety feature by looking for the thermocouple probe in the burner head, it is like a pointed needle similar to the electrostatic igniter probe but unlike the igniter probe, it does not have a white ceramic insulator around it.

Fit a propane sensor in your kitchen. If there is a gas leak in the kitchen, the alarm signal from the sensor will alert you.

Please whenever I on my regulator , I notice a hissing sound , if I on the gas stove the hissing increases but no smell , I have changed the regulator and the hose still same thing , this week I went to refill my gas I complained they changed the black rubber , used soapy water around the cylinder still no trace of any leakage ... 1 keep cylinder outside the house
2 buy an original good quality cylinder
3 buy gas from major marketers not roadside sellers
4 try to buy a brand new stove. Avoid Chinko. I got my mum a new gas cooker.the last one she had was not stainless steel and it basically fell to pieces. A leaky stove or cooker can release gas
Then something should be wrong with the cylinder, try changing the cylinder gas to see if the hissing sound will be noticed, I don't hear any hissing sound in my own gas cylinder.

Nothing to worry about as long as there is no smell, and you're sure that your sense of smell is good.
You have done everything needed to be done and checked everything needed to be checked.
It doesn't hiss when not in use but only when in use, right?
What is happening is the gas will rush from the cylinder to the burner as soon as turn on the valve. But if you let too much gas flow from the cylinder to the burner, the hissing will persist. But if you turn down the valve a little bit, the hissing should go down after the initial rush/flow.
Give me feedback please

Take it to a gas technician to check on it... Don't DIY on critical items like gas cylinder or burner
