A special envoy is one who is appointed for a specific purpose, in this case, to mend relationships with Nigeria. A special envoy can be anybody from a school teacher to a minister or former president.

So, rather than demean the position of special envoy, consider the purpose of their mission and the message they carry.

When Trump sent a special envoy to monitor court proceedings in Sweden, it was not compulsory that the envoy saw the Swedish president or king. But if the mission had been to mend relations with Sweden, it would have been necessary for the special envoy to meet the king or president.

In the case of the special envoy to Nigeria, they were on the mission to mend relations with Nigeria. Who should they have seen if not the president? Should they have seen only the minister of foreign affairs when they were not on bilateral missions?
