The Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr Godwin Emefiele says about 1.2 billion dollars worth of fish is imported into this country annually.

Emefiele disclosed this in a meeting while briefing some state Governors and the media on the feat recorded so far in agriculture for economic growth, in Abuja on Thursday.

He explained that current fish production stood at 0.8 million tons while the demand was 2.7 million tons, giving a deficit of 1.9 million tons.

He said the apex bank’s current initiative was to engage the coastal state governors to develop the blue economy to address the deficit of 1.9metric tons as well as eradicate the huge import bill for fish.

According to him, this is a very huge economic opportunity for the states to create an enabling environment for investors.

In a similar development, the governor said that major innovation to deepen the poultry business was the recent partnership between the bank and tertiary institutions to pilot the “The University-Based Poultry Production Programme” in twelve 12 Universities across the six geo-political zones.

He added that with the objective of not only building future agripreneurs but making the universities able to improve their internally generated revenue.

“For the pilot phase, five Nigerian Universities, namely; Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, Federal University of Agriculture Abeokuta (FUNAAB), Rivers State University, Port Harcourt, University of Nigeria, Nsukka and University of Ilorin were enrolled.

165,631 PVCs not collected in Kogi, 40,912 in Bayelsa – INEC
“These Universities have submitted a revised proposal to their respective sponsoring banks,” he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Governors of Ekiti, Adamawa, Lagos, Ogun, Benue, Zamfara, Kebbi, Jigawa, Sokoto, Bauchi, Gombe, Katsina, Anambra, Imo, Edo, and Borno states attended the meeting.

And
How does that affect the government? Or aren’t they still deriving income from it via their sea ports?

Has Dangote entered the fishing business too?
Expecting a ban on fish importation soon and an announcement that Dangote has acquired the biggest fishing industry or building the biggest fishing Mill in Nigeria.
That's how the CBN,the government of the day and Nigeria rolls these days.

When you say Nigeria Imports, is the importation done by federal government using taxpayers' money, with no return or the importation is done by business men who recoup their cost from profit made when sold??!...

I understand the economy of this nation is in tatters, but churning out or tossing bloated figures to confuse the lay man is very unbecoming for learned elders in power... I humbly stand to be corrected tho. I am no economist, just applying common street sense here.

It is like the paradox of someone that has rivers everywhere, yet no water to drink. Lagos is an island and many rivers all round Nigeria; yet we import fish in large quantities. Our problem has always been, proper human capital management. Let's harness what we have and this country will be the greatest!

So what?

Are they importing the fish to
distribute free of charge to Nigerians?

This must be the worst CBN governor
in history of this country.

Buhari just loves dunces. He doesn't
like appointing people who are smarter than him.
