Indeed ! It is not easy to stay alive when you feel you've failed. It feels like there is nothing left to live for. But, these are the trials of life and we just have to try and stand, even when other human beings add to your pain. I wish he had just decided to hold on.

You are right, facebook and instagram are wrong platform to visit whenever one is down or depressed. You may be intimidated with fake livestyle of people and ended up seeing yourself as looser. Meanwhile those you see there have more challenges but you won't know unless you go closer.
It's better you hangout with friends/family, play videogame, watch comedy, goto a bar then return back home and map out strategy on how to achieve your goals.

Changing of immediate environment can also help.
