Macon1212:It is pronounced as "WADAR". Check Merriam Webster dictionary. In America, the T sound is pronounced as 'D'. It also takes longer in the US - 15months is definitely more than the 9-10months it requires in the UK. |

Na this kind thread I dey like. ![]() Ayobami has said it all and I would encourage brainy graduates to apply to the US for the reasons outlined. Nothing else to add. Oh! The United States has the world's biggest economy. Jobs! Jobs!! Jobs!!! If you decide to go entrepreneurial, better funding opportunities than anywhere in the world. But remember, the 21st century is an Asian century. |

I believe that wherever u study is not the issue. It is the individual who decides to be what he wants to be. As a consultant I have assessed and interacted graduates from Nigeria and their counterparts from U.S, U.K, and other parts of Europe and Africa in clinical research and exchange programs and most times I see that Nigerians are better and more thorough in clinical judgment with a broader and sharper acumen. Unfortunately Nigeria govt is not helping matters. |

Macon1212:I don't know where you lived in the U.S. but 'water' is pronounced 'wader' in standard American English. It's a flap T. Same as butter, better and others. I've been studying American English for over 2 years now. |

vaxx:I studied in Belgium, Netherlands and UK. University rankings (THE) is always biased in favour of English speaking schools (UK, USA, Australia etc). One major defect in the ranking is the "popularity of the university" as a criteria. For the fact that most people around the world speak English and watch English movies, that has surely translated into fairly good knowledge about many things English, including their culture, schools etc. How many people in Nigeria can name any school in the Dutch, French and Asian speaking countries? The quality of tuition I received in UK is a far cry when compared to what I got in Belgium and Netherlands. My stint in Holland was brief, it was a Fulbright 5 months exchange, but the quality was second to none. In UK, pass mark is 39%, and most people pay essay writers to pass exams. Not only that, 95% of exams are essay, which nobody fails except you are a complete fool. In Belgium and Netherlands pass mark is 50%, and you have to sit a proper exam and defend it before your lecturer, which is known as oral exam. Very very difficult to pass exams there without studying for it. Their exam questions are selected to cover the whole lecture, there is nothing like choose 3 from 5 questions. So to pass, you must cover the whole model. I still got distinction from a UK university even though I put 1/4 of what I did in Belgium. |

Crispels:You're correct. The biggest difference between British and American English is the T. The flap T, glottal T, stop T, etc. Water is pronounced as wader with a soft 'd.' |

Asian universities are far better when considering tuition and scholarship. The main issue there is language barrier. |

Macon1212:Reposting the entire post to comment? By the way, the OP is right- water is pronounced "wadar" nor "wora". If you're in the US u should know this is how pple pronounce it. It's only Nigerians in Nigeria who say "wora", the same way potato is "potado" in the US but Nigerians will erroneously say "poraro". ![]() |

What i just need now is the grace to study architecture in either of these countries. It's been like over a year now that i' ve been praying and searching for a scholarship to study in either of them, but its feels like I' ve been chasing the clouds :-( Dear God, please hear me out and answer my biggest prayer. And if i dont reach the biggest star, please God let me make it to a bright one. Amen. |

Nigerians and degree certificates are 5 & 6. I have seen a Professor with 7 Degrees while Alhaji Dangote has one degree as the Richest Man in Africa and among the Hundredth richest in the world. if I have my MSc, I am OK. |

The quality of education in the UK is quite good..It's also expensive, 30 thousand pounds a year for just tuition at Imperial College London excluding living expenses. The City of London's living expenses is one of the most expensive in the world, for example 600 pounds a month rent for just one small room excluding food, transport, etc. Highly ranked british universities are on par with top US universities, especially Russell Group of Schools such as Cambridge, Oxford, Imperial, LSE, Manchester, Nottingham, Queen Mary University of London, etc. |
