As Nigeria celebrates its 59th anniversary as an independent nation country, it is interesting to note how many think there is little to celebrate. Check out many developmental indexes and you will see that Nigeria ranks poorly. If such indexes are not much to go by as some would argue--- take a good look at actual standard of living in Nigeria.

Food prices are high, house rent is high, educational standard is in the doldrums and employment is rife.Salaries are not encouraging in most cases.(Minimum wage is a case in point)

The question is: Are Nigerians today living better than a decade ago?

So how does this concern the north? The north contributes majorly to the percentage of poverty in Nigeria because of their stifled development. Some northern states have poverty levels as high as 70%! Even their almighty kano! This pulls down the country a lot. Illiteracy is as high as 80% in some northern states. Child mortality rate is higher than national average. Healthcare delivery in the north is worse than elsewhere. Terrorism found its way to Nigeria through the north and continues to drain the country's resources.

And the worst thing is how the north has been able to gradually transfer all these negative attributes to other parts of the country by holding on to leadership/ruler ship.
The north has produced more rulers than all the other parts of the country combined. And even if a ruler is to emerge from any other part of the country, he must be the North's choice.

The most annoying thing is how the West and the East struggle to outdo each other in becoming the North's lackey! Children of the South come to social media to beef one another while the north is left free to dictate direction for the country at the costly expense of the Southerners. Even the northerners have to be saved from themselves by the Southerners who need to come together before it is too late and chart a meaningful direction for the country. I wish you a sober Independence Day.

There's an element of truth to this, but southern politicians bear responsibility as well

Funny how all your examples are from the GEJ years....a regime whose actions the vindictive Buhari is going over with a fine tooth-comb! What happened to the other times none southerners were at the helm of affairs? I can tell you for free that the ‘kwarruption’ of just one northern kleptomaniac, Abacha, cancels out all the examples you gave up there....and with a couple more billion dollars to spare! wink

The southern politicians are in the North's pocket. Look at the last election for example, Yoruba Osinbajo was Buharis running mate while the Igbo Obi was Atikus running mate. The Southerners tend to see the north as the high and nighty. Until the middle belt and the south unite, the north would continue to take the country backwards, spreading poverty and killings.

Absolute stupidity and bigotry at best; as if the alleged illiteracy in the north is preventing southerners from getting jobs or the poverty taking food off their table and whether leaders from a particular area are expected to develop their home regions at the expense of others - how illogical and narrow minded.

I used to beleive in all this 'North underdeveloped Nigeria' ish...until I actually started reading why developing naitons are developing, and developed nations are developed.

The problem with Nigeria is , when we got independent, our economy was based on one model...exporting raw materials to the West, and using the income to import stuff. And it is that economic model we have been using, and which we have not made any effort to change...instead we argue about how to share the limited money using terms like 'resource control', 'it is our oil', etc.

Another problem is that we exercise price controls over sectors like power and petroleum. In the name of subsidy we throw away 2 trillion naira per annum. We also heavily subsidse power...and this leads to the stifling of growth in the power and oil sector....who is going to come and invest in a sector where prices are controlled all the time.

Then what is the no1 business model in the North and South? Importing stuff and selling it. This depletes our already scarce forex revenues, and makes the economy worse.

Then there is this idea that manufacturing is rubbish. We all like to praise Innoson and Dangote...yet we don't want to be like them. We want to go into business importing stuff, and selling so that we can have a fat bank account and a house filled with imported stuff.

So what can we do to develop. Well....stop subsides in the oil and power sector. Yes, prices for power and oil will shoot up, yes millions will suffer...but investment will flow in, and jobs will be created. And production will icnrease...and we would eventually become a manufacturing society.

And no, I am not defending Buhari. Buhari self has refused to stop price controls, his broder controls//closure is just treating symptoms without treating the disease, his security polices are bad...and let's be frank, he has refused to remove subsides because politics. And let's be frank, if Southerners take over....the same thing is going to happen. (GEJ privatised power...and then made things diffiuclt for the DISCOS and GENCOS by bringing in price controls.....something that many Nigerians hail him for...but won't tolerate if the government extended the same favour to their own buisnesses.).

Honestly, the reason why Nigeria is not developed is because Nigerians want a free lunch. There is no such thing as a free lunch. And Peter Obi was right...we have to be like China if we want to grow....together or separate.

Many would agree that the incompetence of GEJ is nothing compared to the monumental incompetence and primordial tendencies of the aged Buhari. With facts.

The billions of naira siphoned away by diezani and her cronies, or the money wasted by dasuki? Or the brazen money laundering? Every region has their nasty legacy if that is it. Kidnapping is the legacy of the South South to the whole of Nigeria.

Should we also say the South south turned Nigeria to the kidnap capital of the world, outdoing even those crazy South Americans and Mexicans?

Dude, even a child born yesterday knows that even as nobody is acclaiming GEJ to be the Lee Kwan-Yu we’ve all been waiting for, there is absolutely no way a bigot and a coup-plotting certificateless dolt like Buhari can be a better option! Those of us who knew his antecedents warned Nigerians about Buharis’ crass incompetence, wickedness and bigotry, but we were dismissed as noisemakers! Today, everyone can bear witness to how the country’s fortunes have nosedived since 2015!

The Fulani herdsmen killing from the middle belt to the south are hardly south south people. Not to forget that they have added serious kidnapping to the mix.At least the south Southerners keep their menace to their region. Unlike the Fulani's who spread theirs to other parts of the country. Look, bro, no matter how we twist this, the fact remains that the north has been a major drag around Nigeria's neck than any other region.

There is really nothing to say to you since you have completely swallowed pdps kool aid. Coup plotting, certificateless, bigot. You are unable to go beyond the usual pdp talking points.

You talk about Nigerias fortunes nosediving? What happened in 2015? Or you don't remember that the price of oil dropped? Immediately tanking our revenue? Is it because somehow survived and did not drop to Venezuela levels?

Why are you dodging the point? Did the South south not pioneer, commercialise and demonstrate the viability of kidnapping as a hustle? Can you go easy on the hypocrisy and self deceit that whatever region you are from is an utopia and not also a shithole in its own right?

If the south south started it, they limited it to their region. Did they go to other parts of the country to kidnap others? The south south lays the golden eggs the whole country shares and yet their region was neglected for so long. The Fulani's on the other hand spread their menace around the country. That difference speaks to the topic.

Stop the bs about neglect please. Don't you have NDDC, and before that ompadec? What did you do when your son was president? You empowered militants and made them billionaires. No one from the south south should be complaining again about bad governanace. You had your shot and it was completely pissed away.

It is now a fulani northerner cleaning up ogoniland. A fulani northerner building the Niger bridge. What did your super leaders do in six years? You should be ashamed to point fingers at any region.

I am not from the south south, bro. And again, yes- the south south is neglected big time. Government agencies such as NDDC and OMPADEC from their antecedents are largely siphons for public funds. What has ever been done to foreign oil companies polluting the Niger Delta? When a true son of the Niger Delta, Saro Wiwa stood up against this, we all remember what happened. GEJ that you mentioned was a throw up of the crooked Nigerian system backed by the same north we are talking about. And no matter how we look at it, on average the Niger Deltan is still better than the northerner. Check literacy level, healthcare delivery and poverty levels, Sir.
