The Avocats Sans Frontieres France, popularly known as Lawyers Without Boarders, has alleged that over 69 percent of inmates in Nigeria’s prisons are awaiting trials. Head of ASF in Nigeria, Angela Uwandu, stated this in Abuja yesterday at the launch of SAFE project titled “Strengthening the National Actors’ Capacities and Advocating for Ending Severe Human Rights Violations in Nigeria”.

According to her, ASF is determined to provide legal aid for victims of human rights violation in Nigeria and address alleged extra judicial executions, torture, ill-treatment and arbitrary detention by security agencies.

The representative of the Inspector-General of Police, SP Kalu Chijioke, assured that the police would continue to be accountable and transparent in its dealings with cases of such.

And, to think that out of the 69%, 68% are innocent inmates is heartbreaking.
Whatever happens to the 109 and 360 thieves representing us, is a case for another day or better still, a story for the old gods

Nigerian police is responsible for this, they arrest you for no reason then force you to bail yourself, if u dont have it they leave u there until anyday God intervenes.

Instead of them to make our judiciary to conduct speedy trials, they are congesting the dilapidated prisons.

This is a very serious issue. I was involved in bailing somebody recently from court and it exposed me to series of rot in the system.

From the court down to Kiri Kiri prisons, it's all a messy situation.
When I got to Kiri Kiri, I wept uncontrollably when I saw people languishing innocently in prison. A whole of them attributed their present predicament to the men of the Nigerian police.

Even in prison, the system is also so messy, I remember an allegation then so rife in Kiri Kiri that an international NGO gave pad for the women in the prison and those in charge diverted it. I was also looking at the inmates the authorities claim they spent billions in feeding. A whole lot of them are suffering from Kwashioko and other diseases associated with malnourishment. You can imagine the kind of evil we have in the system.

It's all messy, if you have a conscience and visit the prisons, you will weep uncontrollably at the sight you will behold.

The Nigerian Judiciary/Legal system is still in a deep Rot...
I would suggest that NIGERIAN PRISONS should have a special court to judge SUSPECTS(not yet convicted by law) that have overstayed due to over adjournment of cases in prison cos thats also part of the reason the prisons are highly congested.... you will see a cell meant for 4 only people filled up with more than 30 inmates....Haba!

A country where there's no job her ppl indulge in crime as the only means of survival. This's always the result of a government who embarks on a suicide mission.

The work of Ryan03 gang.
There was a prison decongestion exercise in 2006 that went nowhere. They just chopped money. My wife went round several states in the Midwest to identify prisoners that could be released.

If you are poor, all you need to do is be in a fight, be arrested and have no one to bail you out. You will be forgotten in the system in less than a month.
