Sheyi Ojo: An Open Challenge to Eagles’ Manager
editor October 5, 2019 5:58 Am

While the egg heads of the Nigeria Football Federation are labouring to convince some English players of Nigerian descent to star for the Super Eagles, Glasgow Rangers forward, Sheyi Ojo, has charged, Gernot Rohr, to just call his name and he’ll be there

Glasgow Rangers forward, Sheyi Ojo has said he was ready to commit his international future to Nigeria ahead of the Three Lions of England after the 22-year-old made the declaration on his social media handle recently.

The Liverpool academy graduate is, however, waiting desperately for an invitation from Super Eagles head coach, Gernot Rohr.

“I’ve made it known that I am willing to switch allegiance to Nigeria. I’ll be glad if I am called up because just like Joe Aribo I also want to play for #Nigeria at senior level,” he said on Twitter.

The 22-year-old has represented England at all youth levels from the U-16, U-17, U-18, U-19, U-20 and U-21 levels and was a key member of the squad that won the 2017 FIFA U-20 World Cup in South Korea.

Ojo, who was born to Nigerian parents in Hertfordshire, has revealed that he would ‘never turn down’ the three-time African champions but rather think about the call before making his decision.

“To be honest, I don’t know much about it (Nigeria interest), but if they call me I’d be honoured to go to Nigeria,” Ojo told BBC Sport.

“It’s obviously a massive nation. I’m just really focused on club football at the moment, but I’m excited about the future, both club and country.
“My parents are originally from Nigeria as well, so they know a lot about it. They’ve always been keen on the idea (to represent Nigeria) but so far I’ve mainly been focusing on club football.
“It’s starting to get to the time where I have to start thinking about my future. And of course, if Nigeria were to call me now it would be an honour.

“Of course, if I was to get selected I’d definitely think about it, I’d never turn down Nigeria.
“I’m from Nigeria originally so it’d be an honour, likewise with England as well. If I keep doing well, opportunities will come by for club and country.

“It’s not really something I’m thinking about at the moment but you never know what could happen in the future.”

NFF boss, Amaju Pinnick, had reiterated severally that youngsters of Nigerian origin who are doing well in England and other leagues will wear the Nigerian colours at the appropriate time.

He said it had been in the plans of the present NFF board to build a young Super Eagles team ahead of the 2022 World Cup, adding that the federation is monitoring several Nigerian players that are making waves in the various leagues.
The on-loan Liverpool forward has revealed he’s started the process to switch allegiances to the Super Eagles.

Ojo said: “I have made it known that I am willing to switch allegiance to Nigeria. It’s up to the coaches to decide on picking up in the squad and in the meantime, all I have to do is to keep doing my best at Rangers and hope I get noticed.”

Ojo recently claimed that Rangers were the best team in Scotland, but Rangers hero Barry Ferguson has urged him to keep his mouth shut after the winger reiterated his thoughts that Gers were the best team in Scotland.

When asked recently if he stood by his comments the playmaker said: “I stand by what I said and I think Rangers are in a good run of form.

“We are doing really well so far this season and we are looking hungry. Any team that looks hungry and is getting wins, it can only be positive. Of course, we have to give Celtic respect but, from my own opinion, I believe we can have a really successful season.”

Yinmu....baba go change mouth now when an elite club comes for him and he begin to churn out consistence performance smiley...dis guys just dey use us as option cheesy

He is not sick or injured.. He is just not fully fit.

What does travel have to do with the matter?

you are both saying the same thing. To put it simply, Nigeria was a fall-back option.

ChrisKels:

In summary he never wanted to play for Nigeria, he only kept Nigeria as a tool to improve his career should things go wrong this season and he fails to realise his 3lions dreams. From the bolded, d boy only wanted his not-so-good self for Nigeria and his good self for England. So Nigeria isn't worthy of having a Chelsea starter in him, we are only worthy of his loan self to mid able or relegation team abi? Bros stop defending the indefensible, Tomori never wanted to play for Nigeria. Period

He is going there to train, as long as he gets enough rest, he is fine.

The coach gets a chance to see how his fitness is coming along.

Guys in the end it's a matter of the heart. I am Nigerian and also British. Had I been a player in a position to pick between playing for either country there is no way on earth I will be as happy banging in goals for England as I would doing it for Nigeria. My heroes are Yekini, Finidi, Okocha etc...

Now...my cousins are dual nationals as well and they will rather wait to play for England until they retire then even think of playing for any other country. Their heroes are Lineker, Gascoigne, John Barnes etc. I don't judge them it's just the way it is...

My son is only 6 years old and as much as I try to make him realise we are Naija first and British second he is naturally more aligned with his British side, from his mum, school, neighbors etc if in the future he was a football player I honestly feel he will be happier playing for England. Who knows eh

I will not be happy with you...if your son happens to be a footballer and he later choose to play for England.

please take him home sometimes....
tell him stories about our culture and the peculiar nature of Nigeria set ups
and make him watch Nigeria football matches.....

What has Mason Greenwood that you are mentioning him ?

Another overhyped player loading

Even Ansu fati has done more than Mason Greenwood with lesser games but you wont hear noise from the spanish media
I'm talking about what I've seen with my own eyes.
I normally don't watch manure games unless there are playing against Arsenal but these days I check it out just to see Greenwood.

how many village meetings do you take your kids to? angry

Yes, society plays a role, but then, a child can only identify so much with what he is exposed to.

For instance, I fiercely identify as Igbo, but I was neither born nor bred in the East, I wasn't even surrounded with Igbo people growing up. I haven't been to my father's place in almost 18 years, I barely identify with them, but generally, I am fiercely Igbo, by some weird occurrence.

Same way certain people may not have grown up in Nigeria, but fiercely identify as such from years of what many would term indoctrination.

When it comes down to it sha, there is no manual for these things. Some will identify, others won't; like John Boyega and Chiwetel Ejiofor, both British-Nigerians, one barely identifies with his Nigerian side, the other infuses his Nigerian side in everything. There is also the end that, children are more likely to identify with their mother's side than their fathers most of the time, so, I understand where wayodude is coming from.

For instance, if someone like me marries an abroadian, the way I will soak that child in Banga soup and Egusi, your Nigerian accent will be popping from the abroad sef grin

Where is the village meeting to take the children to?? There are parts of America where you do not have that many Nigerians.

This identity thing is not that simple.

I have cousins who were bred in America but identify more as Nigerians. BUT if a choice comes between Nigeria and America. They will choose America for sure. Why? All they know about Nigeria is corruption, rituals, kidnapping, 419 etc. Their parents usually run down Nigeria in front of them so their impression is negative. People can be proudly Nigerian and still decide to represent another country.

But for identity, they will tell you, they are Nigerian. They only eat Nigerian food in their house by the way.

In Nigeria, it is different. Even if you are born and bred in Lagos, you are not viewed as a lagosian. Your state is your father's state.

This is not true. Dele was never and I don't think has ever played CM. He started out as a Winger for Spurs before being converted to an AM as time went on. At those two positions, you will get to goal scoring position and score. So it's not a big deal considering his playing position
Dele played as a CM in his first few games for Spuds. He also played as a LM in a 4-4-2 before he switched to AM.
In his first two seasons - it was a big deal as he was a 20 year old that could play different positions.
The first two screenshots was where he played at Crewe before he moved to Spuds.
