MERCHANDISER:
why are most igbo communities in south south denying their igbo identity?

Even sunday olisa ogochukwu who hails from Igbouzo(ibuzo)in delta said in press conference that he isn't igbo same with Wike(Nwaike,Nwike)

BTW that's the meaning of rumu?

Sadly, this is true! But it's 'some' and not 'most' as you allude to!

It's stems from a serious lack of self-belief and pride in ones origins/history that you have to continue the tradition your parents started of denying their Igbo heritage for political and economic survival during and after the uncivil war! I can cut their parents some slack because we can't sit here and begin to imagine what they went through during that period! The way Murtala gathered all the adult and young Asaba men he could find and summarily executed the lot of them is a case in point and would have been fresh in their memories at the time!

However, i extend no such understanding to their children and grandchildren who today still keep up with this tradition of denial! Deny your heritage in this day and age for what? It's not like you have a pogrom-loving, red-eyed Nigerian soldier in front of you, with his gun cocked, and asking if you're Igbo or not!

I find most of these deniers are either impostors, or they're actually from the Niger-Delta/South-South but have hung around Igbo haters a lot and now believe all the stories these haters told them about us!

What is the native language of the Etche people please?

What language (apart from English & pidgin) is spoken in Opopo land? - Igbo

Oh, wait! There's Obigbo o or do they call the place Oyibo now?

I'm not claiming any part of Rivers to be part of the Igbo tribe but I just want you to learn something new and change your perspective.

Thanks

Chei! The kind of revisionism going on in this forum is something else! These 'one Nigeria' bigots have gone for broke and now tell bold-faced lies with a straight face all in a bid to try and change history and obfuscate the Igbo narrative! It's borne out of intense fear and hatred for Ndigbo, as well as an attempt to whittle down their influence/territory in the east....the end-game being to try and preserve the present Nigerian political-economy, and also to ensure Ndigbo are viewed in a bad light and hemmed in without access to the sea in the event of Nigeria splitting!

For some of these sad gits, the anti-Igbo remit they have on this forum is a full-time job! shocked
Oga, whether you agree or not, I have just stated the fact. You can't call ANIOMA people Ndigbo please. I am not putting anybody in a bad light. I am just stating the obvious. There is no way Nigeria can divide. But in the event that it does, ANIOMA people can not join your sick BIAFRA revolution. There , I said it . Are you happy now ?.

We waste our time over nonsense and making things that are irrelevant to be something of value.
The way and manner the people from the east always try to take claim of the southern region or aspects of it that speak same vernacular gets me wondering, what's this whole purpose!!
For how long will the igbos continue to do this playing their self righteous truth?

This version of Port harcourt history is revisionist. The Diobus gave the land for the seaport.

The issue of Amadi Ama is a case of Okrikans settling on Ikwerre land as customary tenants.

The greatest mistake that the ijaw man did during the Biafra war, was to leave the ikwere man to stay, they would had chased them out with the igbos.

Before the Biafra war, when we where part of the igbos as Eastern Nigeria, the igbos were possessive, intimidating, doing all sorts. The ikwere man was benefitting from their possession, obia/akpo land was delivered to the ikwere man by the igbos, made them to spread and acquire more.

The diobu you are talking about was an abandoned properties/place, it was occupied by the igbos, the roads and streets are all named before them, but today diobu is under ikwere, and many more.

Ask yourself one question, why did they choose to build government house in ijaw (okrika) land?

Why did they choose to rule Rivers state from ijaw (okrika) land?

When they created Rivers state, they had to site the government house in ijaw (okrika) land because,

(1) they are the through Rivers people.
(2) they were against Biafra, whereas, the ikwere man was for Biafra, because they are one.
(3) because the unity of Nigeria, can be secured with an ijaw man.

The ikwere man is an Igbo man, believe it or leave it.
(1) the Igbo man made the ikwere man who is he.
(2) the Igbo man acquired lands for him, as his brother in Rivers state
(3) they speak the same language, have the same culture, traditions and believe.
(4) the ikwere man was not against Biafra before Rivers state creation. Because they are brothers
(5) a typical Igbo man will prefer to stay in ikwere land in Rivers state.
(6) till today, Igbo man have confidence in ikwere land, they vote and support them in all aspects.

Very rubbish post.

What was the population of Okrikans in 1913?... a little over 1500 persons, all living in Okrika island and usually venturing out to fish in inland waters towards Ikwerreland and returning back to Okrika.

Now you want to rewrite history that 16 okrika villages were ceded to create Port Harcourt.

Tell us what Obumotu means in Okrika. Okrika people living in PH town are Ikwerre people tenants. The land is property of Rebisi as it clearly their farmlands bought by the British.

and for your info, the rivers state government house is In Ikwerreland, OGBUM-NU-ABALI precisely. BMH now Rivers university teaching hospital is in orogbum. Okrika has no business anywhere.

I busted out laughing reading the nonsense he wrote and to end it he had to claim Ika looking for Anioma girlfriend or whatever nonsense he wrote as his effort to make himself look legit.... Couldn't even make this fakeness up even one tries. Smfh!!! I almost cursed the bastard out for trying to insult Anioma like that but, after glancing at his past comments, dude is fucking slow as e get thus, I decided not to say shit. He's not one of us. Nairaland is a place where people come to claim anything..

Believe them and die of heartache..

One moniker can claim to come from 27 states in a day...

Another moniker can claim to come from over 97 tribes in a day..

It all points to insecurity of mind and fear of unknown..

Finally, The argument is port Harcourt or Igwe ocha..

It still Port Harcourt I know or you can call it Harcourt port.

If there is an old name, we will know later.

Not all these people claiming all states and all tribes....

The greatest testimony remains the day , this insecurity from many fellasss will be put to rest to face reality.

Another rubbish post.

Ask yourself if Okrika have land before they can contemplate to give it out. People who have are those that can give.

When the British approached Oju Daniel Kalio to site a port in Okrika Island, he refused on the ground that they don't have enough land for that, and instead escorted the British to Diobu to meet with the Chiefs and Elders and they gave the land for the building of Port. The land was Ikwerre farmlands referred to as Obumotu. The Rebisi are the clan that own the land.

He signed the documents on behalf of the Ikwerres, as an educated classroom teacher as against the illiterate Diobu chief who had no formal education whatsoever and couldnt sign a signature .

The issue of Amadi-Ama, Ozuboko, Okuruama, Azuabie are all straightforward cos the issue was settled by supreme Court ruling in1981, I favour of the Ikwerres.

Part of the land encroached into diobu region, about 20% the money for the total piece of land was 5pounds, oju daniel kalio was the one that represented the both parties, diobu chiefs collected 2pounds, while okrika chiefs collected 3pounds, making okrika to be the lion head.

As for the so called 1981 judgement, you have no idea about that, is not about ownership of portharcourt.

Before we started using LGA system, it use to be province, from Elechi, UTC, abonnema whof, old GRA, Government house, marine Base, borikiri and new road, was all under portharcourt Township province, headed by the okrika man.

You keep mentioning farmlands, can you farm close to shores? Can you farm in a swampy area?
NOTE: portharcourt was 70% swampy area, over the years, it became solidify.
Diobu never had a farm, diobu was a settlement for the igbos, ikweres claimed ownership of diobu.

The name of the city was Igweocha, named because when our ancestors were approaching the ocean, there are no more jungle land to provide cover, instead they will be seeing a open heaven where the ocean reflects skywards causing some heavy contrast. The next generation called it Pitakwa.

Igweocha should replace the imported name of Port Harcourt.

Don’t say what you don’t know. I am from Ikwerre and we do not have any of our ancestors with the name Igweocha. The original name of Port Harcourt is Rebisi kingdom or city today.

Most Nigerians are very funny and don't don't seems to understand Basis Human and People's Rights.

ALL peoples have the right to bear their own names and name their towns/villages the ways they like.
These don't have to fit into preferred expectations of their neighbours or other people.

E.g Ilah(Arabic)= Ellah(Hebrew)

Bin(Arabic)= Ben( Hebrew)= son

Miriam= Mariam= Mary= Maryam

Jean-Baptiste= John the Baptist

Williams= William= Wilhem

Oliseh= Olisa=Orisa= Orisha= Deity/God

Oritsefemi= Orisafemi

Iye mi(Bini) = Iya mi (Yoruba)= My mother

Oma ukuche (Igala)= Omo ikose(Yoruba)= Apprentice.

Okwute(Igbo)= Okwuta(Igala)= Okuta (Yoruba)

Rumu(Ikwerre)= Umu(Igbo)= Oma(Igala)=Omo(Bini)=Omo(Yoruba).

#Moral of the lesson: No language is superior to another and most of these similar languages evolved from a common ancestor.

AdoIfHitlerr:
till today I still wonder how people will allow names like rumuokoro etc to stand
as in what does that mean
do they (igbo speaking rivers) have anything or any meaning to the word rumu?
I wonder why they insisted on answering that rubbish when they know the truth shocked
Re: FFK: Rivers, Change Port Harcourt Name, Here Is Why by oyatz(m): 11:18am On Jun 11, 2020
There was no city known as Igweocha in 1914 when Port Harcourt was established.

If there is any written record where Igweocha was ever written down before 1920, please post it here for all to see.

Igbo people who were migrating to the city started calling it Igweocha in the late 1920s-1930s.

The NCNC Government of Eastern Region once toyed with the idea of renaming the city from Port-Harcourt to Port Azikiwe in the 1950s.

Dreadful:
This is long over due. The city should be returned to it's original name Igweocha.
