To be honest I don’t expect more than 36 toll gates nationwide and maybe one gate per zone. Federal government has no business maintaining roads within states except the federal capital so they really should not be erecting tolls within the states.

Rep Rejects Toll Gates in Southeast

A member of the House of Representatives, representing Aguata Federal Constituency of Anambra State, Hon. Chukwuma Umeoji has opposed the Federal government policy to revive toll gates, across the country, especially in the South East.


Hon. Umeoji through a press briefing at the National Assembly yesterday, suggested that the policy will worsen the plight of people from the region, who were already under the yoke of bad roads.

“The South East has the lowest Federal presence compared to other zones. The Federal roads in the zone have collapsed with a heavy toll on human life, goods and services. The Southeast has the least allocation of funds for road maintenance and re-construction but ranks highest in terms of proposed road taxation.
“What is the moral justification for tolling on roads that are not motorable? He queried.


Various government projects are done in total isolation of the Southeast, the railway line project is structured to exclude the zone he opined.
He alleged that “the zone is completely cut off from land, sea and air. The Enugu Airport is closed down, the Onitsha inland waterways are not functional. This infrastructural policy is to punish the South East and stifle development”.
He said the toll gates, would be “theatres of psychological and mental torture on the people and constitute the arena for humiliation, intimidation and extortion”.

The proposal to return toll gates to every state of the country has been greeted with protests from some groups around the country since govt’s proposal to bring back to the toll gates.
The policy suspended under the 1999-2007 administration of Ex-president Olusegun Obasanjo until recently, when the government of President Buhari, decided to revisit it.

Remember that these roads are old roads and FG probably does not have funds to fix them to a desirable condition. Tolls will help with funds. I do not totally agree with you. There are trunk a (fg), trunk b(state) and trunk c( lg) roads in nigeria. Haven't you seen news where lagos state asks for permission to repair or upgrade fg roads, or where fg told states not to expect reimbursement for constructing fg roads?. The fg or trunk a roads are the responsibility of the fg, but due to the hardship it metes on people in that state, the sg decides to fix those roads. So when you say fg has no business maintaining roads, I disagree.
The lagos Ibadan expressway, the benin ore expressway,and any interstate road are the responsibility of the fg. That being said, you would realise that there has been conspicuous negligence of the se interstate roads. If you've gone through owerri to ph, you would realise how bad things are. Now imagine with the humongous traffic on that road, they ignore it and site a toll gate on that axis. Now, imagine roads you neglected, even with the taxes generated from that region, and then the government is looking inwards to generate cash, and they suddenly remembered those regions and plan huge toll gates on that region when compared to other regions of larger landmass. If you were to be from that region, wouldn't you cry foul.

i know FG owns roads within states but they really have no business holding on to those roads because they are incapable of maintaining them. As for the express ways, FG is obviously stranded and desperate so how do you think they will raise money to build those roads? I say we give it a chance and let’s see what they do with it. The works budget was highest and I hope they have a plan for all unmotorable roads.

Also, the works Minister is on social media. If there are any federal roads neglected, call him out on it! If NEPA increases my fare at the same time ensures that I have steady light as a result of the increase then no problem. I have never seen tolls anywhere in the world with fees that are significant though.

All legislators from the SouthEast regardless of party affiliations should oppose toll roads in the zone. This is classic taxation without representation. The zone with the least federal presence and yet contributes so much revenue to the federal government than most of the other favored states in this concocted, lopsided union called Nigeria should not be burdened again with the expense of building infrastructures in other parts of the country. This act by the government is a bridge too far in its discriminatory policies against the people of southeast. . The people MUST speak up and rally against this Aso Rock brigandage.
