you as a Nigerian which advantage have you taken on it?

Even you as a Nigerian which advantage have you taken on it apart from criticizing government policies?

The fact is, it doesn't matter how you cut and dice this closure policy, it's a good thing for Nigeria and it should have been done decades ago, but the crooks benefiting from smuggling and anti Nigerian activities didn't let it happen.

Once upon a time in the Nigeria customs, the most lucrative and desirable posting was Seme Border posting. Why? Because of smuggling and the huge amount of money they collect from smugglers.

Nigerians want a better country where they have cheap and enough food to eat, but small sacrifices needed to get them there is a burden.

Fair trade and protectionism are major issues all over the world today, responsible countries are protecting their borders, slamming tariffs on cheating countries with unfair trade policies , but ordinary border closing to make sure you have food security in the future is a big deal.

What do you people really want.?

Necessity as they say is the mother of invention. The recent closure of the broader will make Nigerians go into large scale and mechanized farming to cash in on the high cost of these products.
This will eventually bring the price down and make them available. I support closure of the boarder.

I had expected you'll highlight the results of your research on the probable indicators that has caused the hike in price of local rice rather quick to talking about budget and supplementary budget.
Those indicators would help us understand if actually local farmers are deliberately spiking price without recourse or you're speculating without good intention.

Then they should review their decision. The decision was never taken in the interest of the people. It was for rice farmers who are close to government. Since it has led to inflation, they should rescind the decision. Otherwise, we have the right to stage a peaceful demonstration. This government is indeed a mistake. Curse be any Nigerian that vote them back into power come 2023. They are making life bitter for lots of people and not better.

What are you assuming upandan about? Based on stats, as at 2004, the daily demand for rice in lagos state alone is 800,000 bags per day (other states of the federation not stated).

That alone is 40,000 metric tonnes per day. Nobody can deliver that much rice at the moment, even the current MD of the AfDB, who was agric minister under Jonathan could only boast of servicing 50% of Lagos daily demand, by tactically using fertilizer subsidy networks groups and that was when we had only boko haram.

Now we have ISIS/ISIL/ISWAP, fulani herdsmen, Zamfara bandits, a toxic hydra headed collabo that guarantees insecurity is now a norm on farming routes, with very few people going to farm for fear of never returning.

Insecurity challenges for now, dissuade farming so where will the rice come from? Thats why closing the border was a dumb move, as far as rice is concerned......

I have a thread about rice productivity if you're interested. Here's some of the graphic PWC used to compare Nigeria's productivity vs other nations.

Is Nigeria better off in comparative cost of rice production when compared to Thailand and India?
There are too many misplaced of priorities in our country. Instead of closing border why can the governmen place tax or tariff on rice importation from neighboring countries to generate more revenue or better still allow economic integration with Thailand and India on rice production through exchanging of what we are better off over what this two countries are worse off.
Just like USA and China on soya beans and many others commodities.
Some people take pleasure in sounding so intelligent while they actually sound foolish in the real sense. How on earth can a government tax communities that are smuggled I to the country. Instead of many of us to see opportunities in the present economic policy, we idly sit and talk talk and talk unproductive.

I think the improper channel of supply rather than unavailability is the reason rice is expensive in some places. In some northern states, rice goes for less than it is in the south. There should bee a mechanism put in place to aid distribution from areas of excess supply to those of excess demands.

So, who is growing the local rice people are buying and eating all over Nigeria? Ghost farmers?

Enemy of Nigeria.

PMB gave coscharis billions to established rice farm and rice mill, people like you were shouting igbo amaka all over the place and you as usual abused and insulted the rest of Nigeria even though the funds that built the farm came from the rest of Nigeria and PMB's good wisdom.

So, have they chased coscharis away from his farm too?

There's got to be more to you than hatred, tribalism and bitterness.
God bless you for hitting him, I was about doing same

Nigeria is already self sufficient its just that people are naturally greedy. Since they closed the border they assumed a monopoly and increased there prices then blame the border closure for it?

If the Fg can regulate the prices of this things it would help.
FG should regulate price of foodstuff!! Are you for real? You seem stuck in 1984 where your bubu lives. Where are the RiPAN that said rice will be sold for 13k? They've suddenly gone dumb. Let me educate you. If supply can meet demand, prices will not rise. Prices rise when there's more demand than supply. Nigeria is not self-sufficient in rice. QED

do you bother to ask if rice is the only goods that goes through the border? What of those export goods like nigerchin wire , building irons, water tanks, building materials etc. What of those import goods from west Africa like karnel, aluminium, marble stones? Do you know how much govt makes on these goods as duty? Have you also asked yourself why has foreign rice not finished in the market since 2 months of closure? Meaning the policy is killing the real business people at the border area.
I am a poultry farmer in Badagry, because in Cotonuo they are used to frozen chicken so they don't usually rear chicken so they come to Badagry to buy eggs. Now border is closed we farmers in Badagry are feeling the heat because most of our eggs buyers are beninuose since the road to Lagos is bad for egg transportation. Now eggs are spoiling because of egg glut.

Re: 'Border Closure Exposes Nigeria's Deficiency In Local Rice Production' by raheemadejoke81(f): 10:57am On Oct 13, 2019
Even if we have rice and other food items in abundant, it does not mean farmers and the processor's of those items will sell at a give away prices, because cost of production has to be considered. The reason why government closed the border was to enable local products attract more price so that those farmers and processors can pay back their loans. If importation is allowed the many people are clamouring's for it then it become a big issue for our farmers. Closing of border is at our own good, you may not understand it now but in the future all of us will appreciate it.

At least we can start from somewhere and progress from there.

Hmmm.....Coscharis built a Rice mill worth over 35million dollars, with 3000hectres of land.

At the current rate of production it supplied 40,000metric tonnes of rice per year, at full capacity it will supply 120,000metric tonnes of rice per year.

That 120,000metrics tonnes of rice so, is the daily demand of rice for just 3 days for only lagos state (does not include the other 35 states of the federation and abuja), that hundreds of people will sweat to produce in one year and stone sef full am....

Insecurity has driven people away from the farm, even in Uromi now, farming na community project, they move in packs like wolves, so if anything happens, who go fit manage escape go tell the story of wetin happen go dey.

Government should stop lying to itself, and tell the truth. It should stop paying lip service to security challenges in the country.

Else, if they continue like this, they will be forced to start considering subsidy for rice, when a bag of rice hits #60,000. Make them no open border and put pressure on smugglers, you will see drama.

That time na big brother Naija and bob risky them go blame for scarcity and high price of rice, no be PDP again........
