Lagos State Government has declared a state of emergency on various dilapidated highways and carriage roads within the State with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu's order on Sunday that massive rehabilitation work on critical roads and highways across the State must commence on Monday, 14th October 2019.

Sanwo-Olu’s directive followed the conclusion of his series of meetings with eight multi-national engineering firms and a subsequent directive that work must commence on major highways identified as critical to reduce traffic congestions on highways in Lagos.

The Governor said that eight engineering firms have been instructed to immediately mobilise to the respective sites and commence major construction work on the identified roads.

He said: “This afternoon, we have just concluded meeting with various reputable construction companies and all of them have been given the brief to immediately commence major construction work in various parts of the State. The exercise will begin tomorrow with palliative work on the selected roads, which are both on the Island and Mainland divisions of the State”.

“The contractors have been given the mandate to start mobilising to their respective sites without further delay. Their activities must first give our people an immediate relief on the affected roads so that there can be free flow of traffic even during the rehabilitation work”, the Governor emphasised.

To complement the major construction work on the highways, Sanwo-Olu said Lagos State Public Works Corporation (LSPWC) would be carrying out repairs of 116 inner roads across the State, in addition to over 200 roads already rehabilitated by the Corporation in the last three months.

He maintained that he was aware of the pain experienced by road users which was aggravated by persistent downpour, appealing to residents to bear with the Government while efforts were being made to assuage their pains and bring permanent relief.

“We expect the rains will begin to subside in this month of October and this is why we are mobilising our contractors to immediately start the major construction work on the identified highways and bring permanent relief to residents. I am giving all Lagosians the assurance that the contractors will start the construction in earnest and will deliver on the terms of agreements reached with them”, Sanwo-Olu assured.

He said officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) will also be working round the clock to control traffic in areas where the construction would take place.

Also speaking on the development, the Special Adviser on Works and Infrastructure, Engr. Aramide Adeyoye, listed some of the critical highways and roads to be constructed to include Ojota stretch of the Ikorodu Road, Motorways-Kudurat Abiola Way, Apogbon Highway, Babs Animashaun Road, Agric/Ishawo Road and Ijede Road in Ikorodu, as well as Lekki-Epe Expressway from Abraham Adesanya to Eleko Junction.

She affirmed that the there would also be massive re-construction work on a network of roads in Ikoyi, Ikeja GRA and Victoria Island.

The contractors deployed by the Government include Julius Berger, Hi-tech, Arab Contractors, Metropolitan Construction, Slabaugh Construction, China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC), Rajaf Foundation Construction, and RCF Nigeria Limited.

Indeed. Plastic governance

It was recently published that Lagos state generates 50 billion per month as Internally generated funds. With its weak pension payment structure, delayed promotion to workers and stipends given to state workers we wonder where such amounts of money goes into.

Don't ask me. I'm sure you K ow whom to think of. The critical issue is with suchofty amounts on a regar basis, why is there no decent part of the state without good roads

Please tell us what you did with the 200 billion recently published state IGR for 2019 first quarter ws spent on.

Tell us its not on politics rather than governance.

I challenge you, the godfathers and commissioner of finance for Lagos to state clearly that the recent toll increment plus previous repayments for the road repairs, construction and maintenance as against the repayments made. Monthly is beyond 10-20% of the funds the toll generates monthly. What happens to the other meagre sum.

Guys not everyone is a full. This is a challenge to the governor and finance commissioner of the state. Punish your financial records and let's see how disbursements is made with respect Road maintenance and Companies assigned to ha dle these projects and how the selection processes are carried out

Good!!

Let him start from Abaranje and do something about the potholes that have outnumbered the good part of the road. In fact, the road should be dualized. I learnt he has a family house is at Okerube.

Eko oni baje o!!

All these are fake news or I should call it propaganda. What they call road rehabilitation is those big stones they are pouring on potholes that are spoiling vehicles tires instead of proper rehabilitation as it was done by his predecessors. This guy called Sanwo-Olu isn't doing anything unlike his predecessors. All roads in Lagos are in a terrible situation. Come to NNPC in Ejigbo through to Iyana Ejigbo, ilewe(Egbe) to synagogue in Ikotun, come see how people are suffering daily due to the failure of leadership.

Ambode was a great performer compare to Sanwo-Olu who's clueless with no direction

It is only in Nigeria that leaders are praised for what is primarily their duty.

This is long overdue but it is still better than turning deaf ears. Hopefully, we can get long-lasting repairs and solutions to the problem.
