You can keep quite and allow people to make reasonable contribution to the discussion. I'm not even Yoruba before you start running your mouth.

Lol...

I once said this that when I was young to my aunty... That Americans will never do this kind of burial... There's no jazz anywhere...

She just jejely told me... American marine officers and sailors are buried in the sea...

Look it up before you want to argue...

I guess... If you worked with the sea or died at the sea... The mermaids hold the sole right to your body...

May her soul rest in peace.

Nigeria and Africa general are very superstitious.. They believe if the sacrifice is not made, other members of her family would die by that same means. Thus the sacrifice. I asked this question when I was in owerri, and this was the answer I got. Also she'll be buried close to the river.

Even Americans practice this...

It is a believe and if you dig deep to the reason you will get to know better. The problem we currently having as people is that we were brainwashed to believed that our believe is barbaric and superstition while the religion we were introduced to is godly.... If you as an African pray calling the name of your grandfather who died years ago, you will be classified as an unbeliever who is calling on dead people while if you cal Jesus who is also dead you're assume to be a believer. The rationale behind trying to unify human race with a particular believe is ungodly and that is why we are were we are right now.

What about people who drown in Hotel Swimming Pools? What happens to their corpse?

Same thing... A sacrifice will be meted out... Failure to do so leads to more repercussion for the family.

They're buried close to the water, or some sort of sacrifice is out in place.

My neighbor, a woman was drowned few days ago due to heavy rainfall. Her body was found 3 days later in a near by river across our street.

What surprises me is that when they want bury her, etutu (sacrifice) was performed by osun people (they wore white clothes and in beads). This woman I'm talking about was a Muslim o. She has even gone to Mecca before.

Can anybody here tell me why it is done?

What happens if they don't do the sacrifice and just bury her like that?

Is this peculiar to only Yoruba tribe?
So that it won't lead to ÀKÚFÀ (serial death via same scenario)

It's for Traditional Worshipers, not for Muslims... Very appalling such was done for someone who is a Muslim and performed Hajj. What a pity...

People keep saying it's Tradition it's Tradition, why can't they also CONTINUE burying drown people in the shore? It's for Traditional Worshipers, if you are one let us know. Stop calling yourself a Muslim and still believe this nonsense... This is also applicable in Christiandom I guess

Osun and you're asking questions.

They worship their river. The river goddess was angry. Nobody comes to her anymore to ask about their people in overseas. They just use phones. So the goddess gave a reminder that she's still there.

They have to beg her not to vex.

A lot of people call themselves educated here. And you didn't read the religions you have wasn't yours?

Tradition is Tradition.

Even some fools with surnames like Edun, Ogun and co. Your great grandfathers didn't tell you history?

Religion is a scam. Just believe in God and live your life.

Indomie Children will think this is funny. I have witnessed man drowned and his family buried him in his village, a year later three of family members has also drowned when coming from back from a party, before they could bury them another one was also drown during his service. They find out what is the reason for the death and they went to dig up the remaining of their father and buried him close to the river and the ones who also drowned. Before you quote me, it is the tradition and culture of some people not everybody.

No much difference between being a muslim and idol worship, that is why prayers should always be offered for salvation of their souls. Or have you not seen how they co-habit without rancor?
