Please I need urgent and clear answer on this. An assignment was given to my niece to complete the following sentences with (a) or (an) and one of the questions is
-------------- happy girl.

I told her to fill it with (a) but the teacher marked it bad, I wrote on the book and asked if the "H" is silent in happy and she wrote back that it is a vowel.

I want to go there tomorrow but I want different views on it first.

The teacher must be a Yoruba woman.

Like the guy above said, she pronounces the word with the H silent probably because of her accent.
If you are going to correct her, you should go there with a book or article that treats the topic.
Good luck.

I know that there are exceptions to the rule but is H silent in "happy" does it sound like a vowel when pronounced? I know that "an" can be used for "hour" because it sounds like our when pronounce and even in heir but h in happy sounds like h which is consonant. Please throw more light because I'm here to learn. Thank you.

It doesn't matter if the teacher is Yoruba or not, she clearly don't know that 'a' is used before words that we pronounce the letter 'h' for such as happy, house and 'an' is used before word where we don't pronounce the 'h' for such as hour, herb

no.

A good number of Nigerians make the mistake a lot. I can't read a single thread on Nairaland without coming across that and a host of other grammatical errors.

Only if you are Yoruba. The rules of English Language do not apply to them because of their H-Factor.

The teacher is wrong. Though there are exceptions like "hour" , "hospital", but the H is happy is pronounced with the article "a" and not "an". Her tribe shouldn't be an excuse for her incompetence though

no, the teacher must be an olodo. Yes, yorubas make the mistake when they speak but not in writing. Those are some of the most basic things we learnt early in primary school, very easy to spot.

More over being a Yoruba, Igbo or Hausa isn't an excuse to make some silly mistakes such as this, pronunciation is okay or even accent issue but not writing and teaching students grin grin

How can she say letter H is a vowel?

she needs a seat in that her class as a student

Obviously, she is not an English language teacher or not vast in grammar.
The letter may be quite confusing when used with indefinite articles but not with word like "happy"

Letter H is a consonant sound, though "H" in certain words is unvoiced. Hence, the article for words beginning with a consonant sound "a" not "an" is used for "Happy"

Some other words beginning with "H" sound also take "a". e. g. a House, a Home, a Hall, a Herbal, a Horse, a Hobby, a Hoe, a Host, a Hotel etc. But some other words whose letter H is silent begin with "an". e. g. an hour, an honour

The correct answer is A happy girl. The h is not silent in happy so it will take the article A

That teacher is a disgrace. You better withdraw your niece from that school.
"h" in happy is 100% articulated
This is the only reason I don't know maths till this day.
Lol "h" a vowel? Go and report to the principal or just continue wasting money on your niece

Most yorubas find it difficult to say , a House, a happy birthday, a hotel.
They will come and debate and argue with their accent as if English man welcomes that.
Some of them can't distinguish the use of AS and HAS.
nothing like an happy biko, ejoo
