Following a ban on all imports and exports by President Muhammadu Buhari, Ghana and Nigeria have agreed on the creation of a temporary corridor on Nigeria’s western border with Benin Republic where Ghanaian goods in transit can pass to avoid collateral damage arising from the closure of Nigeria’s borders with Benin.

Nigeria partially closed its borders with Benin in August 2019 to curb the spate of rice smuggling, which Africa’s most populous country said was threatening its attempt to boost local production.

The Ghanaian authorities are expected to provide further information on Ghanaian companies that do business in Nigeria, the goods and companies affected and those likely to be affected by the closure of the borders, Graphic Online reports.

The decisions were reached when the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Ms Shirley Botchwey, and Minister of Trade and Industry, Mr Alan Kyerematen, held talks with their Nigerian counterparts on the border closure in Abuja.

While Botchwey met with Nigeria's Foreign Minister, Geoffrey Onyeama, Kyerematen held discussions with the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Otunba Niyi Adebayo.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Friday said the Abuja meetings were aimed at discussing further ways of providing a path towards resolving the challenges facing Ghanaian companies and traders following the closure of the border.

I thought everyone said Ghana was better than Nigeria? We don't share land border with them yet they are pushing for us to end out border closure. Nigeria should demand certain concessions such as their discriminatory trade practices against Nigerians living in Ghana. We cannot continue to be Mr. Pay for everyone and still get disrespected by the same ungrateful bunch.

How come Buhari closed a sector that is generating huge revenue for the country and now decides to be taxing businesses here and there.

If their beef is exclusively with Benin and Nigeria republic why not allow the rest if ECOWAS to trade via land borders. I really dont know what Nigeria wants from those two.

The comments is correct unless you have arguments why not. There's enough information to see part of the story but everything without a bunch of speculation. The question is what does Nigeria want them to do specifically that they dont already do.

I'll you an example with US-Mexico illegal immigration issue. Trump threatened sanctions against Mexico if they dont do more to curb issue. The US got Mexico to agree to more information sharing, station national guard at their southern border and keep asylum seekers in Mexico until their cases are resolved in the US.

Nigeria wants fair trade relationship with other countries. Nigeria should not be a dumping ground for ungrateful neighbours. Just watch how Buhari will treat South Africa's fucck up. South Africans will cry and shed blood for attacking and killing Nigerians. Buhari never forgives nor forgets but he is never in a hurry to take his own pound of flesh. At the right time, Buhari will strike South Africa like Thunder.

The border closure looks like advice from the just inaugurated Economic Management Team. Seems Buhari is really listening to the Economic Team consisting of Nigeria's best Economists.

What do these countries have to do for Nigeria to reopen its borders specifically. Nigeria hasn't publicly stated what exactly that entails. Do you think the plan is to close border indefinitely?

Buhari won't do anything to South Africa. Nigeria didn't threaten sanctions in the heat of the moment. It won't be after everything calms he'll do something petty. If you disagree that's cool.

Bump: lol it's funny Nigerians and Ghanaians are arguing over an issue that's already resolved. GUTA boycott will be called off since their goods can reach Nigeria.

the cost of economic sabotage outweighs the revenue inflow.
