THE ORIGIN OF THE NAME, BIAFRA?

The town of Biafara or Biafra comes up in a 1584 map by Abraham Ortelius from Antwerp in modern day Belgium where it is shown to be located on the south bank (some later descriptions say north) of the 'Camarones River'.

This 1584 edition of an atlas by Ortelius is considered as the first proper atlas, depicting Africa with inland towns named. The Camarones River where Cameroon gets its name (from the Portuguese word for prawns), is known today as the Wouri River.

The Portuguese navigator and explorer, Fernão do Pó, whose name was given to Bioko Island in Equatorial Guinea, was the first European up the river in 1472. It was from a town identified as 'Biafra' or 'Biafara' on the river in the area east of the Benin Empire. Later on, the coast of these areas were known as the Bight of Biafra.

Biafra was described as the capital of a kingdom with the same name and this town continued to show up on maps in the same location on the same river. This kingdom, however, does not seem to exist today; if these maps are correct in terms of the location of this town, 'Biafra' would be somewhere near the Cameroonian town of Yabassi today, which is also on the Wouri River.

Certainly, 'Biafra' would be in the Nkam department of the Littoral Province in Cameroon, which is where Yabassi is today, which is also the Cameroonian department that the Wouri runs through.

The exact location of the town, or wether this town existed or not, has not been ascertained, it could be that the town and kingdom were completely made up or was an amalgam of various kingdoms such as the kingdom of Bamum and other territories. In any case, the town and 'kingdom' of Biafra was removed from maps in the 19th century. #HistoryVille

these ibo people thinks that we in the southsouth are fools. This explanation shows that there is no truth in biafra. Biafra is an igbo language formed by the coward ojukwu in the 1960s: therefore, BIA-means come, FRA-means join or emerge. So OP dont come here and fool urself no one is a fool

I heard some old Igbo woman say it was coined from an Igbo phrase "bia furu". Don't know how true that is.

You guy will continue trying to find what doesn't exist.

How old was the idiot that wrote this article that he couldn't at least locate the tribe where his imaginary Biafra was located, so that he could ask them the meaning of Biafra?

That isn't Biafra self.

Biafra came from two Igbo words.

Bia meaning come
Fra is from the word Ofara meaning. I don't agree with you.

I think here Nigeria wanted the East why the East were saying no to them.

Not just Igbo, also means the same in Ijaw, Ibibio and most Biafra tribes. Just like blood is Obala in almost all Biafran tribes. It is a unifying word indicating that we all one One People. Afonja, leave us alone, get the fucck of our lives. You Dahomeys!

[b]Very interesting piece because later, in 1960s an Ijaw man, Chief Frank Opigo selected the name "Biafra" for SE & SS region and those present at the meeting liked it. Here's my source: Orient Harmony Facebook page (Orient Harmony is a unifying ideology for people of SE & SS thus SESS people)

What of the name "Biafra"? We are told that Ojukwu convened a meeting of SESS leaders and a certain Chief Frank Opigo, an Ijaw man from today’s Bayelsa, came up with the name BIAFRA for the SESS region, and those present liked it. Biafra with its rising sun symbol, was to represent a SESS region getting brighter and brighter.

Costly mistakes were made. Most of those who played leadership roles during the civil war are now dead. We SESS who are alive now can visualize, then create a working unity between all SESS that will bring for all of us together, that dream of progress and productivity, plus prosperity and participation in the modern world that our forefathers dreamt for us.

As a mainly Christian region, we SESS people can regularly bring our hopes for SESS to our God, to plead His help and mercy, to make SESS a thoroughly godly region, a blessing to ourselves, and to the rest of Africa. Amen.

@ Indiaindia - I am from SS and am united with every nation of SS plus with my SE brethren.

You're on your own if truly you are from SS. You need to deal with your satan-inspired hate. People of SS & SE are mostly Christians so are already united with brotherly love under Christ. Never once did SE or any SS nation send terrorist herdsmen anywhere to kill indigenes. Never once did SE or any SS nation want to force any colony of themselves upon the entire country. My only reason for wanting separation from Arewa is because Arewa are killing MB and Southerners.

Why your baseless hatred for SE? Unless from your spiritual father Satan. You better repent of it.

Biafra is an Igbo coinage. You can't coin a woes from different languages.

Bros you just wrote rubbish...
It was even an Ijaw man that suggest to Eastern Regional Parliament/Government headed by Ojukwu to adopt the name Biafra.
Biafra is not any Igbo name... It's the name of the area today called South East, South South in Nigeria and North West and South West and a part of Littoral Provinces in Cameroon
