It comes from the British. In the UK a lot of lawyers and judges wear wigs and this practice can be observed in several British colonies including in the US if one looks through old historical records. Some colonies abandoned the practice while some kept it.

It is an inherited part of the British legal system which we inherited as a former colony.

Lawyers wearing wig to court depends on the jurisdiction of the court they are going to
There is no need for a lawyer to wear a wig if he is having a case in high court,appeal court and other lower courts
But if he has a case in Supreme Court then it’s a must for him to put his wig
Another reason why lawyers put on wig is to dinstinguish between a senior advocate that is a SAN from a junior lawyer(ordinary Barristers)
SAN are to put on a wig in a court to show that they are senior advocate of Nigeria

American judges and attorneys don't wear wigs in court again. Trust Nigerians to always follow whatever comes from 'above' blindly.

Some also say judges wear long wigs to make It more difficult for criminal defendants to identify them outside courtroom.

It's a special kinda outfit to them...I feel they do so in order to stand out in the society as practitioners of the law. Its really about recognition - my submission though.

Nigerian lawyers wear wigs because they're reactionaries who just can't get enough of British things and can't give them up even if you hold a gun to their heads.

Blame colonial mentality plus stupidity. Ironically, we copied it from the English, but they've discarded the use of wigs by lawyers in civil courts in England. Nigerian lawyers still cling to wigs as if it's their birthright despite our hot weather. Their mumu don do.
