Anayordike:
Dear Webmaster please I want you to advise me on how to solve this issue withour website host.

About 7 years ago my church decided to own a website and I was asked to take up though I don't know anything about web development and hosting and the likes. Though I learned it.

Then one of my Boss brothers helped us to get the website done and running online and my boss later renbused him and that is how we have been doing it up to date.

The website subscription was due for renewal this last September but due to logistics we were unable to get it done before it was suspended. I contacted the guy and he said that it was because we have not paid.
However, later discovered that he was just a reseller, he doesn't have a hosting company. He has been give us outrageous bills and Boss has been complaining too.

Then I did research and discovered another hosting company that was cheaper and direct. When I informed my Boss he said we should move on and did signed up for 3 years with the new hosting company.
So when we tried launch our website with the new company it was not going and so have to contact them. It was then they told us that the website was being hosted by.... hosting company and that it's been suspended.
They advised me to contact the former hosting company to point the domain to the new hosting company.
I then contacted this guys and asking him to release the domain name to us but was infuriated claiming he is not going to release it unless we pay him for this year. He claimed that he had renewed it on our behalf. I told him that no one will believe him. How come paid for it and it was still suspended? Did he renew it and went ahead to ask the hosting company to suspend it?
HOW can we pay for something we didn't use?

Please advise me on how to go about this issue. Should I change the domain name and abandon the domain for him?
I don't want us both to go our different ways in disagreement.
What's the best way out?

Thanks

Realdeals:
Anayordike, if the screenshot you uploaded is of the domain, it is expired and the guy cannot point it to any server.

It is advisable you call the guy to renew the domain name TODAY. You might find it difficult and more expensive to renew as from tomorrow, he's the only one that can help you for now if you still need that domain name.
Yes it is!
BUT can we forget about the domain name and go for another as we have already paid for all that in our new hosting company?
And is there any disadvantage after?
Thanks

With this info, the domain has not been renewed and as it is now that it would probably be in redemption period or auction.

He can still renew (probably at a higher fee) or you just wait till the domain is back for purchase at a normal price (in maybe 3months or so) that's if the name isn't attractive or valuable else someone else might have bought it via auction.

The issue now is the design, otherwise the best option now is to register a new domain let it be ".com.ng" at the back, after 6 months, the old domain that's ".com" will be available for free, you can then register it again.

There isn't much advice that can be given to you here unless you pay the price for the domain renewal with your host. If your domain name is expired, most hosting companies will demand that you renew it before you can transfer it to another host. For you to transfer your domain from host company A to company B, you will have to initiate the transfer process from company A before company B can receive your domain. You can see why the company A has the exclusive right to your domain. That is why I often advise website owners to use a different company for hosting their domain than their sites. If your case is that you had used a different company for hosting your domain other than your website host, you could have easily overlooked your reseller host and renew your domain with that company that hosted it to make it transferable, you will only need to download your website files from the site root of your reseller host ("wp-content" file in case your site is WordPress) to move to your new host.

My only advice to you is to bargain with your reseller host so that they only allow you to pay for your domain renewal, not the entire site hosting. The renewal price for the domain is often in the region of $15 or so, but to renew the entire site, they can charge you outrageous prices. I hope you get my point?

This church people sef!.Got free money but do not like paying for goods and services. Always want thing free. Better pay the guy cos to be a reseller is not a crime. and also remember that when you need support and maintenance he is the person you will see physically in your church(office) not the company based in any country or state.

OP your likes frustrates programmers and ends calling them scammers.

You even expected the innocent programmer to have a hosting and domain providing company, hence he is a reseller for not owning such company.

How do you want thunder to strike you?
Forgive you...
I checked your profile and I saw your age... You may not be older to my first child.
You don't know me and what am capable of doing and you come here to insult someone old enough to be your father both physiologically and spiritually?
My type doesn't curse... That's why I forgive. Don't do that again!

I don't remember telling anyone he's a member of my church.
What's wrong going directly to the hosting company? Is it a crime?

I have the backup files on my local system. I and my son did the design ourselves.

I just want peace! I don't want him to feel cheated! And I don't want him to also cheat us. But I don't mind if paying off will make him good.

I NEED TO CLARIFY THAT WE ARE NOT OWING HIM A DIME! WE PAID HIM FOR HIS SERVICE.
That

Clear your old bills.

If the domain was suspended already you have to pay before you make any modifications.

Someone let his company domain expire, someone else bought it on auction after 30 days and he had to pay $400.

Next time renew before expiry.

Settle the guy and move on. At this point you are the one holding him to ransom.

Ps. Signing up for 3 years with a company you have no experience with because it's cheap is very likely to end in tears. Quality of hardware and service differ wildly.
Thanks again!
PLEASE NOTE THAT WE ARE NOT OWING HIM A DIME EXCEPT THE ONE HE IS DEMANDING FOR NOW Which IS WHY I AM COMPLAINING!

Then, you don't need to feel guilty since you don't owe him anything, just register the ".com.ng" and let him be.

Op ignorance is your major problem here. Look for web developers to guide you because the guy may be right.
Mr. he didn't claim he knew. If he is not ignorant he wont be here. There are a lot of programmers on nairaland.

Okay let us start with this - What's your hosting provider and where did you get your domain from??

Different hosting providers handle stuffs like this differently. I'm sure there's a documentation for something like this.

Ps: I haven't looked through the entire thread to see if you answered any of my questions, but it won't do no harm if you answer again.

From the look things it seems you pretty much have figured things out. Also, you don't seem to come off as a tech savvy.
Well, this is an article that explains the entire process of moving your site from you previous host to a new one

l. Getting a new domain means losing visitors who new your former domain no matter how close the domain name related.
2. Getting a new domain means getting a new website since you have not settle with the guy, you can't access your previous website contents. You are starting all over from square one.
3. It depends on the information or contents of the former site. Do you really need them? if yes , you must settle for peace. Come to an agreement. if possible, pay him off.
4. Ask him to renew it, but beat down the prize.... or check the actual hosting fees of the said site to know if he is overcharging. some hosting companies charge less with poor service.
5. Make a deal with him, renew for three months, get a new website, transfer the domain
6. He is the major player here as far as getting back the previous content is concerned. so you must play loyalty to your best to get his interest or attention or forget the former website for life because you can never by pass him except you are able to get a good chat with the customer care service of the website, but since you can't log into admin, mmmmmm hard time....
