The report, published by The Punch newspaper on October 19, 2019, claimed that “the Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, said on Friday that the least daily upkeep spent on a prisoner in America was N31,000.

“He said the amount was higher than the N30,000 which the Federal Government recently approved as monthly minimum wage for its workers.

“He said his ministry, considering the dwindling resources available to the country, had proposed N730.00 for the daily upkeep of its prisoners

The report further quoted Aregbesola as saying that “The American government budget for correctional service was about $81bn in 2018.

“Each prisoner enjoys a daily upkeep facility of an equivalent of between N31,000 and N61,000.

“The daily upkeep of an American prisoner is also higher than the N30,000 national minimum wage recently approved for the Nigerian workers

A fact-check investigation by Daily Trust on Sunday confirmed that the Nigerian Interior minister’s assertion that the nation’s minimum wage was below American prisoner’s daily upkeep was FACTUAL.

A United Kingdom-based Mail Online article published on October 25, 2018, stated that “California spends $8.6bn a year on its prison system, more than any other state (in the United States), averaging $64,642 per inmate.” This means that with its total inmates’ population of 133,040, a sum of $177.10 (N63,756.49) is spent on each Californian inmate daily (at N360/$1, Bureau De Change rates).

According to a United States Department of Justice document seen by our reporter, the US Federal Bureau of Prisons, which has one of the lowest budget per inmate in the American prison system, had a 2019 budget of $7.141bn for its 180,210 federal offenders (federal prisoners) as at January 31, 2019.

When the figures are broken down per prisoner, it comes to $39,626 (N14,265,360) yearly and $108.56 (N39,081.60) daily per inmate respectively (at N360/$1, Bureau De Change

For a state like New York, which has one of the highest numbers of prison inmates in the United States, its 2019 executive budget was $3.295bn for its Department of Corrections and Community Supervision (DOCCS) which operates 52 correctional facilities across the state that house 45,363 inmates as at October 1, 2019, according to a Fact Sheet from the DOCCS and the State agency’s 2019 appropriations.

When the figures are broken down per prisoner, it amounts to $72,636.29 (N26,149,064.40) yearly and $199 (N71,640) daily per inmate respectively (at N360/$1, Bureau De Change rates).

statistical comparisons between 2 nations in different social structure and with dis-similar economic variables can sometimes be confounding.

making matters worse still would be comparing the daily allowance of Nigerian prisoners to workers on the minimum wage of less than 30,000 and you will pity you freedom.

True.

How do you compare a developed society with a third world country ?

It’s just like comparing a 2020 Rolls-Royce with a 1999 Toyota Camry.

BTW:
Prisons.
Lots of Prisons in the US are privately owned. They run For-Profit Prison systems and these prisons make up money through the incarceration of prisoners.

With a private prison, many of the burdens are taken off the government and put onto a private company. Instead of all the business that goes along with running a prison, the government simply has to supply the prisoners, and oversee the prison. The building, facilities and maintenance are outsourced to private bodies.

Do you now see how they fair better? - prison wise.

Minimum wage.
Again, minimum wage works in the US because it doesn’t just apply to Public Institutions or Civil Service. All Private companies in the US must pay the minimum wage to Unskilled Labour - with the exceptions of the black market labour, for those who are undocumented (and, I must say, this is illegal, so the authorities mustn’t know).

In Nigeria, even the federal and state governments are struggling to pay the minimum wage, let alone requiring the average gas stations or business centres in the street to pay 30k minimum to its Petrol and cafe attendants. Even some fresh graduates don’t earn up to 30k in their white collar jobs.

Aregbesola was not thoughtful to make such comparisons.

In my final year at the university, I was attending a business class outside my school stuff. In the class, we got to a topic called "the ideology of nations". It was a group stuff. I was in SA group. Those in Nigeria group could not find what Nigerian stands for.

We live every day and every year on chance. No plan for the next 20,50 years. our budget shows we are highly disorganized country. About 40bn was budgeted for education in 2020 budget. A sector with about 2m teachers, over 60,000 pry and sec schools and over 30 million people of school age. How many Kobo will one person get?

We need to dismantle this country and redefine her. We are moving sheepishly without any sense of direction. vision 2000 came and gone. vision 2020 is as useless as the letter p in psychology. Buhari will successfully waste people's 8 years and go. Another clueless person will come and prank the people for another 8 years.

Stop comparing how they use their dollar to how we use our naira..

My friend stayed in Nevada, USA for 3years, paid $500 per month for his room. That's 175k naira per month. Even on the highland I doubt if you would pay 175k for a single room per month.

My point is that the 2 economy are totally different. Imagine people paying as much as $3000 for 2 room in LA per month, they are require to earn better pay checks to cover this bill. Don't compare it to a country paying 12k per month for a room self contain.

Value of money is in what it can buy. Not just on exchange rates.
Otherwise, Kuwait with their Dinar would be the best country.

It's true that freedom is priceless but it depends of how you choose to define freedom.

Some are physically free but are mentally and psychological imprisoned.
