IPPIS: ASUU To Meet NASS Leaders In Fight Against Payroll System Controversy by valentineuwakwe(m): 7:10am On Oct 28, 2019 |
• IPPIS October deadline : No pay , no work, union tells FG The Academic Staff Union of Universities will on Monday ( today) meet with the leadership of the National Assembly as part of its battle against the controversial Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System . A source in the nation’s parliament confided in one of our correspondents that the meeting would be held behind closed doors today ( Monday ) . He said , “ It has been confirmed that the ASUU leadership will meet the leadership of the National Assembly on Monday . The meeting will centre on the ongoing face - off between ASUU and the Federal Government over the IPPIS saga. ” President Muhammadu Buhari, had during the 2020 budget presentation at the National Assembly on October 8, ordered that all public sector workers must register for the IPPIS to save cost and fight corruption by blocking leakages in the Federal Government’ s salary payment structure . But ASUU had last week opposed the President’ s directive, saying the IPPIS negated the law on university autonomy . The Accountant-General of the Federation , Alhaji Ahmed Idris , who faulted ASUU , said the union ’s position was an open endorsement of corruption. Also, the Minister of Finance , Budget and National Planning, Mrs Zainab Ahmed, had on Thursday said no government agency must resist the payment system. The Special Adviser to the Senate President on Media and Publicity, Ola Awoniyi, on Sunday confirmed ASUU’ s meeting with the National Assembly leadership. He said the meeting would hold at 11am in his principal ’s conference room. Awoniyi in a WhatsApp message to one of our correspondents, wrote, “ The Academic Staff Union of Universities will meet His Excellency, the Senate President, on Monday at Meeting Room 301 by 11am. ” When contacted, the ASUU National President, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi , also confirmed the meeting , but declined to provide details of demands the union would table before the Senate President. “ The most important thing is that we are meeting tomorrow ( Monday) . We want to discuss the Nigerian education generally . All issues ( including the IPPIS ) will be touched . I think that is enough, ” the ASUU president noted. No pay , no work, union tells FG But the South -West branch of the union on Sunday reiterated its opposition to the Federal Government’ s move to enrol university lecturers in the IPPIS . The ASUU leaders from the South - West during a press conference held at the University of Ibadan, described the IPPIS as “ a one -size - fits-all approach tainted with corrupt tendencies .” The ASUU position was made known by the Coordinator of the South-West , Prof. Ade Adejumo, who led the Chairman of the University of Ibadan chapter, Prof Deji Omole, and its Investment Secretary, Prof. Ayo Akinwole, to address journalists at the ASUU Secretariat on the UI campus . Adejumo was asked what would be the reaction of the union to the Federal Government’ s statement that anyone who failed to register for the IPPIS by October 31 would not be paid, he said , “ ASUU ’s position has always remained no pay, no work. ” Adejumo berated the Accountant- General of the Federation for alleging that ASUU was encouraging corruption by its opposition to the IPPIS . source: https://punchng.com/payroll-system-controversy-ASUU-takes-battle-to-national-assembly-meets-lawan-gbaja/

Why ASUU is against newly introduced IPPIS 1. Some lecturers work in more than one university 2. The current payment system allow arbitrary deductions by ASUU from it members salaries 3. Thousands of dead lecturers still exist on the payroll reason why some VCs support ASUU ASUU is becoming increasingly irresponsible. If they are talking about university autonomy as the reason for rejecting IPPIS, then they should be ready to ask the government to stop all forms of funding to the universities to make the autonomy complete. 84 Likes 9 Shares |

So, why is ASUU opposed to this system of eliminating waste from the system? What exactly is their issue with IPPIS? Anyway, waste must be cut. 14 Likes 3 Shares |

ASUU, like many government agencies, is filled with individuals fighting for themselves rather than the staff they are meant to protect. No sane individual would look at the payroll system and object to it except for selfish reasons. These ones just want a share of the national cake. Chop and clean mouth. 6 Likes 2 Shares |

As much as I don't support ASUU because of complaints like their member of staff collecting 2 or 3 salaries monthly and some other corrupt practices, Government sponsored IPPIS cannot also be trusted. Many Universities VCs will become errand boy of some few priviledged boys working in Abuja in various capacities like Atoney General Office, Federal Character, Ministry of Finance. These guys are stupendously corrupt. There were reports that these guys always use leverages and exploit some misdoings or wrongdoings or slippages of some Universities to ensure employment of unqualified persons into these Universities. Any VCs that do not comply will have his request turned down and interest sabotaged by these folks. These IPPIS will also expose FG staffers who have some problems with payment to voracious extortion from these overfed Abuja boys. After lodging in hotels for days, these guys will allegedly collect money ranging from 100 to 200k from these individuals in order to do their jobs. If money does not exchange hands, the staff request will be buried and he or she might be denied of salaries for months until he make kick backs. IPPIS in itself is not a bad idea, it is a welcome development bit regulators should ensure checks and balance are pit on place to ensure these system are not exploited by some people for self-serving purposes. 7 Likes |

ASUU is very gullible, they tell a lot of lies against govt, they have spoilt the system, the VCs are already mad misusing the whole opportunities, employing touts as lecturers and running the system as cult group, govt should register another group to silence ASUU 1 Like |

See ASUU or wetin them call una. IPPIS is compulsory for all. And its payment is without a hitch and best way to help the govt confirm how many people are on their payroll and interestingly, how many lecturers are holding double employment in govt owned Universities. There are multi-dimensional function to this IPPIS scheme,it will expose deep rooted corrupt system, thereby reducing the concocted running cost in the system. If ASUU has nothing to hide why are they sceptical, runing to schedule a meeting with some people at the national assembly for help? 4 Likes 1 Share |

picoba: Unfortunately it' is same Nigeria students that suffer this. When a lecturer is supposed to be at University A attending to his students . He's seen in more than 3 or 4 universities while students spend hours waiting for hiim. Why should Dr Adewale Emeka be holding employment in 3/4 universities when Dr Emeka Aminu Is yet to get employment in 1 federal university? 12 Likes |

The truth of the matter is that the VC's are using ASSU to achieve their selfish aims. They will prepare a high payroll and send to the federal government and when they get the money, they will prepare another payroll they will use to pay the salaries of the lecturers. Secondly, a lot of padding is going on in the salary scale of most lecturers. IPPIS must be implemented in the University environment. I wonder how an employee will tell his employer on how to pay him 5 Likes 1 Share |
