go and feed your 200 million poverty capital of the world citizens. Do you know the meaning of trade. It goes two ways.Did you listen to the man.Ghana will rather block trades with Nigeria and rather trade with Dubai and Europe.Already trade among West African ECOWAS members is the lowest in the world. Ghana exports gold, timber, oil, manufactured products, etc worth 17 billion dollars and out of it,just 80 million dollars goes to Nigeria. So how does a few loss not even loss cos the products can be sold to Europe and China. How does 80 million dollars feed Ghana. Tell me.It's your own people that will suffer cos you can't trade among all these countries again and no imports and exports for them thus businesses and jobs collapsing in Nigeria. Food and goods more than double in prices and majority of your people can't afford such high inflated living. You can't even feed yourself thus closing all your borders to starve yourselves and you're ignorantly shouting that you feed Africa.Despicable words.
well said proff pls can you tell us Ghanian's product imported to Nigeria that contributing economically to the development of our nation? Tell us if all those Africans Nagpur countries are the main producers of goods eg Rice smuggling to Nigeria? Tell us which Nigeria product is essential consumption of all those Africa countries ? Tell us who is more beneficial between who import and who export? Can you tell us why we should not label those Africans countries as a smuggling site of substandard goods into the Nigeria by Road?

Seriously, This border closure really affect a lot of people. Imagine a bag of rice @ 28,000. One Congo @ #1000 which was #350 before. Local rice @ #600 with stone o. Why closing the border when local rice price will still go up to x2 of d price we dey buy foreign rice ? This government is just clueless

Benin republic would rather buy Chinese cement than cement made in Nigeria.

Dangote cement banned in Benin.

Na Benin republic cause am because those people stubborn
Most of the consumer products imported into Republic of Benin are then smuggled into Nigeria. Nigeria needs to keep the borders closed until we are able to put a stop the smuggling. The negative impacts of smuggling on our economy cannot be underestimated.

What is Ghana waiting for?
Is it by force to trade with poverty capital of the world when Dubai is there? Does it make sense?

Excuse me, Nigeria is not begging.

I owe you a cold bottle of ………… (fill in your choice, and let me pick the bill)

It's only a leader that has ball that can hold the bull by the horn this way.

The boarder closure is in the interest of the vast majority of Nigerians, but the very few (negligible percentage of the total populace), who are feeding fat from the illegal trading are crying to the high heaven.

Unfortunately, some ignorant ones, who Buhari is fighting to secure their future are been misguided and blindfolding with ethnic and political scarves. by these saboteurs.

Guys guys, calm down. There'll always be different opinions as to whether or not the closure is good for the country. We should respect the opinion of others without being condescending, abusive or dismissive.
As long as we are not economic scientists everything we say here are conjecture. We may be able to back our assertion with some facts or figures. But even figures can be misleading at times.
If you think you have a superior argument good but no one is oblige to accept it.

As for me, if its actually true that the closure has reduced the smuggling of PMS, then am ok with it. But again, the govt should find a better way to reduce, if not eliminate smuggling on our borders.

How specifically has this affected Ghanaian traders?

It is not only Ghanaian traders that the closure has affected; it has affected almost all the ECOWAS countries that are using the borders – it affects Benin (Republic), Togo, Ivory Coast and Liberia . Our association issued that statement for the purpose of all the (affected) countries.

You don’t realize Ghana is speaking for the rest of west Africa? Ghana’s economy is growing rapaciously at 8%, grin the highest in Africa grin grin but Ghana has an obligation to speak for all the remaining countries in West Africa. Fuckeduppedness Ghana hasn’t ruled out closing its borders to nigerian goods and services. That is a real possibility if this nonsense continue beyond Christmas.

But can nigeria keep their border closed beyond Christmas? Two things could happen. The price of a bag of rice could double, triple or even quadruple by Christmas grin secondly, Nigeria’s generator-powered economy will enter into recession again in early 2020 grin. Those are real possibilities. When these scenarios happen, don’t come back here and say I am a prophet. Fuckeduppedness

See my brother take it easy, the point is clear, Ghana needs Nigeria more than ever. Therefore, Nigeria is the biggest trading partner Ghanian can boast of in Africa.
Complain less, because the major reason why Nigeria closed this border is not because we don't want Ghana to succeed economically, but we have crisis in Nigeria. Armed bandits have more guns than the Nigerian police and army put together and the best way to checkmate this looming problem is by closing the border temporarily. And we all know that nothing goes for nothing, therefore let us all feel the pain.
Consequently, Nigeria is the giant of Africa, there was a saying in all those good old days that says,if Nigeria sneezes Ghana will catch cold. Now we all see why Ghana was mentioned and not even Niger and Benin republic. Ghana seems to be disturbed and pained for this singular act by the Nigerian govt, all because of the little sneezes.
If I were Nigeria,I rather use the border closure to as a bait to correct a lot of ills in those countries where our brothers and sisters are being tortured and maltreated for being Nigerians, examples are South Africa,Togo,Ghana and Cameroun. These countries especially our neighbour,Ghana,I would have prefer Ghana to suffer for being ungrateful and stupid. This was a country that Nigeria catered for her citizens when they were devastated economically. Yes! we gave them everything including free education and name it. Yet,they claimed nothing was given to them.
And for those who might be incensed with this measure, this is the only way to proof to them that we are the true "Giant of Africa" like this comment or not, Ghana must bow.

I am Nigerian.

There's so much empty bragging by some Nigerians but the problem is primary a poor understanding of economics. The guys bragging represent a small percentage though. Most Nigerians condemn the border closure except you're a rice farmer making obscene profits from Nigerians paying through the nose for their grain.

They fail to see that closing the borders primarily to stop the smuggling in of rice is counterproductive. Nigeria does not even have comparative advantage in rice production. A ban on its importation or high tariff walls is the wrong way to go. You're better off importing the things you lack comparative advantage in.

The president has a very poor understanding of economics. Worse, he refuses to listen to experts. All he has been doing since assuming power is to borrow to the heavens money to build projects here and there to stimulate the economy. This isn't working as some of his crude policies, such as the border closure has scared off foreign investments into the country.

It goes both ways , yes we consumed more than them so they will feel the affect more than us but the solution to this is not the closing of the border but to re organise our custom border control across the west African route. We can set up a border in Ghana and certify goods that can come in to the country and add a custom seal . They do that in Europe and it can work here in west Africa.
