I have 500k savings and I need to borrow another 500k. Instead my 500k is given back to me @10% interest and another 500k @10% interest. The smartness there is that digitally you will be seeing ur 500k in ur account which you cannot touch until you have paid the debt completely. They argue that it is in the form of collateral

But in actual sense, the true collateral is tied to ur benefits. The company will pay cooperative first b4 they give you what is left, if you decide to leave the company.

Too much sense Oga. One of the the reason why I opted out of Cooperative o. Now I just put what's supposed to go to cooperative into mmf monthly, & watch it grow, b4 i move to T-Bills. If I need emergency money, as aka I get where to borrow interest free, I borrow and give a date to pay back, while I get interest from my mmf or T-bills. That ur office rate is too high though, most ai know of is usually pegged at 6%.

In other news, I have some funds tied up in Warri refinery, for about 6 months now, since they stopped working, I have been using my head to calculate what interest T-Bills would have given me. Does anyone have an idea how to get money back?

But at the end of the financial year, you are paid dividend on the 500k you kept/as seen in your account right? If the dividend is up to 10% of the 500k then you have nothing to lose but if it's not, then the interest on the 1m loan can not be said to be 20% but rather lower than that, though more than the 10% perceived by your colleagues.

Don’t even talk about dividends. Thats another story for another day. When you don’t have financial education these FIs will play smart with you.

Dividends? Lol. Most cooperatives are run like a fief, where only the Excos call the shots. At times even to access such loans take months before one gets them. Someone with about 1.2m savings got just 53k as dividends, I don't know how many years it was.
Yes, some can be well managed and beneficial, but in the overall sense, I dont accept that cooperative is a sure way if one is to be financially prudent, it's usefulness will be for people who find it difficult to save.

Smartness- but as a knowledgeable guy in finance, you can outsmart them by not falling for it.

The terms were stated clearly 4% per month. So those that are not smart would look at only the 4% not knowing that they are paying 48% per annum(4% * 12months).

The same thing that happens in the cooperative at my place of work. The interest is 10%. But if you want to borrow 1million, you have to have 500k saved in the cooperative. So the 10% is charged on the 1 million you borrowed and you can’t touch the 500k you’ve saved until you pay the 1 million naira completely.

I was trying to educate my colleagues that the interest is actually 20%.

Which is OMO TB?
Re: Treasury Bills In Nigeria by eddyakinrinde(m): 7:46pm On Oct 27, 2019
alezzy13:

Which is OMO TB?

How are Treasury Bills different from OMO?

T-Bills and OMO (Open Market Operation) are similar and work almost the same way. Whilst T-Bills are issued to finance government budget deficit, OMOs are issued by the CBN for monetary policy management i.e. to control the volume of money in circulation. OMOs are also discount instruments in that you get your interest upfront but they can also be bought in the primary and secondary market. Depending on the objective and aggressiveness of the CBN per time, it might be possible to get higher rate on OMOs than T-Bills. OMO is also exempted from taxes. OMOs are issued at irregular intervals.

Hello everyone!!!!
I was at first Bank on Friday to invest in the secondary market but I didn't receive any alert so I came to the bank this morning and I was told that they were not able to verify that it seems they don't want people to be investing in T-bills again that there are a lot of rules guiding it now.
How true is this please??

It was stated here that central bank verifies if you are currently on any loan then you are not qualify to invest. So i understood, any better explanation is welcome

Any info?
Re: Treasury Bills In Nigeria by DigitalMallam: 2:21pm On Oct 28, 2019
More facts are beginning to emerge for the reason behind CBN banned on OMO for Nigerians.
Reports has it that out of the $40billion external reserve, $17b belongs to foreign investors. Recall topmost on Emefiele's STI is keeping the exchange rate at 360 (avoid devaluation). Hence CBN want those that can bring in the $. And only allow banks in case foreign investors decide to sell at secondary mkt.
The effect of this is that corporate bodies and wealthy individuals will be forced to do TBill which will be offered at lower rates

I went to Stanbic this morning and I was told that there's no more secondary market. I tried to inquire, I was told that it's from CBN. that one can only place order for primary market only for now.

Same with Gtb and First Bank today.

The directive is very clear. OMO is simply secondary mkt. Don't be deceived or confused by anyone.
But Cbn is wrong. They should do background checkso to know those that have collected loans .

U r on point, stanbic told me that there are restrictions on secondary market auctions becos the CBN is checkmating illegalities. But I was able to place an order for the primary market.

What I don't understand is, why they will allow us buy at the primary market and not at the secondary.

This is getting serious n complicated, i understand that cbn is trying hard to block the big guns in order to boost the economy but it's getting back to us the little investors somehow. Secondary markets has always been my favorite because of the flexibility involves, hope they get things sorted soonest. Nov 7 is my nxt bidding,n i hope the ease we enjoy in investing in TBs continues, not this long time vetting
