FreelanceRebel: America is building wall to stop the flood of undocumented 'immigrants' who were pouring into the borders at a rate of over 10,000/ day!! US threatened sanctions on Mexico that was givg them transit. No country closes its borders to trade, what they do is discourage some imports by imposing high tariffs. |

These mummu people are not even aware that we the citizens are even suffering more than our neighbors. They are determined for this closure because na govt dey feed them. They care less for the masses.. Buhari & Osinbade have all doubled their feeding & travelling allowances in the 2O2O budget. So selfish As usual, buhari is using hunger as a tool of governance just like he did in 1984!! If we want to make more money as a country, why not stop fuel importation which creates the waste called subsidy. Why don't we ban medical tourism & repair/ equip or specialist & teaching hospitals? They won't do that because it will affect them directly, na only the one that affects masses dem dey implement with full force. Hardnews: I MAKE BOLD TO STATE HERE THAT THERE IS NO NEED FOR THE BORDER CLOSURE. The border closure is a violation of the ECOWAS TREATY on free movement of goods and services across the west african region signed by Nigeria, Ghana, Togo, Benin Republic and some other west african states. The federal government should find out what is making our produce or products less competitive in the market and find solutions to it. Why is the federal government starting what they can not finish. What happen in 3 years time when the present leadership vacates the presidency? 4 Likes |

rentAcock:Yes na..imagine after shipping rice from abroad to Benin, they will collect shipping and custom duty money, and then smuggle to Nigeria at no cost.Meaning that our government don't even gain nothing |

Sonnobax15: Look I support nigeria in doing whatever is necessary to curb smuggling but why bring Ghana into the equation una no tire abi Ghana has legitimate trade with Nigeria so at deserved some bit of heads up besides ur beef is with Benin Republic and some unscrupulous Nigerians who benefit from the smuggling. Please let Ghana be.. Peace.. 2 Likes 1 Share |

BuhariBuster: It takes time bro. Increase in demand births increase in prizes. Yes. But it will open people’s eyes to see the lucrative aspect of those goods whose prizes increased, many will dabble into the business to cash out too. On the long run, there will be so many producers, they will flood the markets, now the supply will surpass the demand. And when that happens, prizes will be reduced and determined by the consumers. All these things take time. I am not a fan on the APC , but they got this right. All they need to do is to improve on electricity and roads for transportation of those goods from rural areas. How can they ship rice from Asia to Benin Republic, pay duty and tax to their government and then smuggle it to Nigeria? That is unfair to Nigerian government. Same thing as cars too and other products banned in Nigeria. If you can’t bring it in legally, den don’t bring it in at all through the back door 2 Likes 1 Share |

Hardnews:I don't support buhari or Apc but I support this idea of border closure, genuine importers can use our ports, when the borders are eventually open, only goods locally produce in African countries should be allowed in through the land borders, customs should even be allowed to raid markets n shops for smuggled goods, let those who are ready to labour enjoy their sweat. |

Laren24: Of course, they're still doing it but not in the scale as before. There was news the other day here on Nairaland about customs seizing some rice in the bush. And I can assure you there're thousands of such bush roads right now that nobody is maning or even talking about. Over time the border closure would become self defeating because as long as there's demand for foreign rice in Nigeria and there's supply in neigboring countries, rice WILL continue to be smuggled into Nigeria. Law of economics says so and there's nothing anybody can do about it. The solution is not closing border. Its very shortsighted and dunmb. How long do they want to close the border? Why closing a border that you'll eventually open? You see, its dumb to close it. The solution is go to Thailand, India, Vietbam, and bring those rice specimen that Nigerians love and grow them here in Nigeria. This's the only solution to that but, of course, this would sound idiotic to these blind men called leaders. 2 Likes |

musicwriter: Perhaps over time Nigerians will learn to appreciate Nigerian rice cultivars. In order words, have you considered the psychological perspective to this. Firstly, there is empirical evidence, it would seem, suggesting that when Nigeria rice are repackaged as foreign, Nigerians patronise these as lustily as the proprietors pocket profits from the sale. Secondly, major reasons given by Nigerians for preferring foreign rice isn’t taste but that detritus saturates Nigeria rice the way it does not forign ones. Incidentally, do you know for certain the various cultivars grown by Nigerian farmers and if they are significantly different to the foreign strains you suggest Nigeria import for growing? |

hatchy:Nigeria is still subsidizing petrol, The increment in petrol coming from Nigeria is not up to 60 naira. As for Rice and cooking oil, it's still entering 9ja, only that the customs charge more. The FG policy is not sustainable, Béninoise are not ready to abide by the request of Nigeria. And they are bringing in goods from Nigeria also, the only thing is that its a little more expensive. I'm a Nigerian living in cotonou and I'm an auto dealer, my customers still come to buy cars every week and they get to their destination safely. Border closure is not working the way they thought it would. Nigerian borders are too porous to Police and the coustoms is very corrupt. They should find a lasting solution to smuggling, not closing borders. 1 Like |
