We need to play on our advantage with these countries, this big brother shit, is making Nigerians poorer... Government should take advantage of our market and tax imports heavily, make money/tax from foreign importers not Nigerians. These countries hate Nigerians anyway.
It's common economic principle to tax imports more, so home industries have a fair advantage, this will lead to real growth and development.

so let it remain closed. We will eat what we have

The border closure actually has more adverse impact on Nigeria than anyone else, if not for Nigeria's population that has cushioned the effects,

Hardnews:
Godwin Emefiele, governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), says the nation’s land borders will remain closed until neighbouring countries meet the requirements for it to be reopened.

Emefiele said this on Monday while speaking to journalists after a meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari in Abuja.
The federal government had closed the country’s land borders to importing and exporting of all items in a bid to curb illegal trading activities by Nigeria’s neighbours.

Hameed Ali, comptroller-general of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), had said that Nigeria’s borders will remain closed until the country and its neighbours agree on existing ECOWAS protocol on movement.

Despite several calls by stakeholders for the re-opening of the borders, Emefiele said the affected countries must first have “concrete engagements” on mutual anti-smuggling policies.

He explained that the smuggling of goods through these countries undermines Nigeria’s economic policy.

“We are not saying that the borders should be closed in perpetuity, but that before the borders are reopened, there must be concrete engagements with countries that are involved in using their ports and countries as landing ports for bringing in goods meant for local consumption, it is understandable,” Emefiele said.

“But the fact that those products are landed in their countries and then transshipped or smuggled into Nigeria is something that I am sure you all agree as Nigerians we should not allow happening because it undermines our economic policy, it undermines our own desire to make sure that industries are alive and jobs are created in Nigeria.”

Emefiele further said that the country’s rice and poultry farmers have, since the closure, recorded improved sales.

“Recently, and this is the absolute truth, about two weeks before the border closure, the chairman of the Rice Processors Association, incidentally, he owns Umza Rice in Kano, called me and said that all the rice millers and processors are having in their warehouses nothing less than 25,000 metric tons of milled rice. That this rice has been unsold because of the smuggling and dumping through Republic of Benin and other border posts that we have in the country and that he would want us to do something about it,” he said.

“Secondly, we also have members of the Poultry Association of Nigeria who also complained that they have thousands of crates of eggs that they could not sell together with even some of the processed chickens also arising from the problem of smuggling and dumping of poultry products into Nigeria.

“A week after the borders were closed, the same rice millers association called to tell us that all the rice that they had in their warehouses have all been sold. Indeed, a lot of people have been depositing money in their accounts and they have even been telling them ‘please hold on don’t even pay money yet until we finished processing your rice’.

“The Poultry Associations have also come to say that they have sold all their eggs, they have sold all their processed chickens and that demand is rising.”
According to him, the improved sale of rice and poultry products is the benefit of closing the borders.

“So when you asked, what is the benefit of the border closure on the economy of Nigeria, I just used two products – poultry and rice. The benefit is that it has helped to create jobs for our people, it has helped to bring the integrated rice milling that we have in the country back into business again and they are making money. Our rural communities are bubbling because there are activities because rice farmers are able to sell their paddy. The poultry business is also doing well, and also maize farmers who produce maize from which feeds are produced are also doing business. These are the benefits,” he said.
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) had
backed Nigeria’s closure of its borders

You would only be right if we had no idea of economics. The increasing demand would result in an equilateral increase in supply. The only exception is when the said good is in scarcity. With more demand for local rice, there would be an increase in rice farmers etc.

These people close borders with providing alternative. no refinery of whatsoever. U said we buy our own made in Nigeria rice but it's full of stone and it's even higher in price than the imported ones. U said no cars from the border but it's hard to see innoson motors car on the way. this government is a dead beat. It's for their own personal interests. I think one day Nigerians will man up and fight for their rights.

As far as I know, our border is the most porous in the world. Go up north, there's nothing like border closure btw Nigeria and niger republic in katsina area because there's no defined route. It's been business as usual. Just cross from your back yard to niger, simple. Perimeter fencing would be the panacea to illegal trading across our borders otherwise called smuggling , same with illegal migration but the question is, is our govt ready for this? Its going to cost us a lot of money because it would be a multi-year project.

The govt of the day is never serious. You closed the border against legitimate business people without making available a plan B. You concentrated only sea port activities in lagos thereby congest our city the more. What happened to port Harcourt's onne port? What of calabar port, what of dredging of river Niger along Kogi-Anambra and port Harcourt routes all through to benue, just the way they refurbished the Kaduna airport and suddenly upgraded same to international standard when they were repairing the Abuja runways and other facilities a few years ago? They closed the border just like that? Even the rice they claimed was being hauled into Nigeria illegally still passed through other routes.

What has the fed govt done to curtail this? Why didn't they empower unemployed graduates with soft loans to go into rice farming and give them an improved yield after training to plant in their various farms with close monitoring and supervision by experts? You went abroad and opened your mouth wide, calling our youths lazy without empowering them in the first place. Would they engage themselves with their fingers after graduating? They found jobs for themselves illegally by engaging in yahoo and all sorts of illicit acts ( both male and female)and you're picking and jailing them, instead of rehabilitating them and engaging them legitimately just like you did to bokoharam repentants. Why not create farm settlements around ? I wonder where those advising them hail from. Same of the same . Those hailing and supporting them also reason like them, smh

So we should open our borders to smuggling? Not a must to eat chicken brov.
I drove in from Togo to Nigeria on an official trip, I arrived Nigeria border around 3am. The level of smuggling was unimaginable. The cars were flowing in as if there was car race. Even ones without burnett, some without windscreens, cars that have been adjusted by welders to allow loads of rice fit in properly etc etc. If you love your country, at least this is the right step. Let them (Benin, Niger and Cameroon) work on their border. All this countries, all will gain afterwards.

Are you admitting that barawo bubu and his Customs Controller have failed to secure our borders against smuggling

Border closure is a good thing, we have the population to supply our goods to, we must utilize our population, China did it and it benefitted them because of their population.

No need to even listen to the other countries, all they care about is themselves and their business they have been exploiting Nigeria's loose border for donkey years.

I'm not really a fan of Buhari because he has neglected the south-south and chanelled Millions of dollars to areas that are not profit table to the whole Nigeria not least the "RUGA" project.

Education, Health care, Infrastructure, security upgrade should be top agenda for any serious Nigerian govt.

Nigerian's purely Nigeria problem..
some pple will just stay one place dey analyze without considering the position of the masses. when there is an increase in market demand without an increase in production. logicaly price will increase which will had a negative effex on the masses. failures due to an uncoperative market structural policy. i'm not against border clozure, but if FG. can put a body in place which will had a concrete grip on the country's production and distribution in such a way that it will also be beneficial to the consumers. only then can border closure be view as a developmental tool. otherwise, na wash. as it will only lead to monopolisation of economic growth in favour of the producers/manufacturers.
