adecz: Oga, I don't see why our borders should be opened without renewed commitment to enforce the rules. How exactly are Nigerians suffering from closure of the borders? What's ECOWAS protocol on movement of goods and services among member states? Should it be such that constitutes sabotage to a country's economy? |

BuhariBuster: It may not necessarily result in price increase, especially when you consider competition. Don't forget that it is likely to encourage increased participation, investment and output, bearing in mind that the market is now better protected against competing foreign alternatives. |

adecz: You cannot increase tariffs and inflict pain on legitimate importer just because of smugglers. Nigeria have its official port, let the importer use that. Why should a cargo of rice coming to Nigeria pass through Benin? Reason well before you condemed |

CoolAmbience: Are you even aware that the closure is two ways? Nigerians cannot also export to neighboring countries. This border closure was also carried out without putting measures in place to prevent inflation & unnecessary profiteering by our local producers as we are witnessing. How has the closure helped us ? |

adecz: Why would I not have put that into account? Of course, it's two ways. In matters of this nature, there's hardly a perfect timing, as individual and group interests are almost always overwhelming. In cases like this, collective national interest is what should be put first. I can't believe you want to answer the question of how the borders closure has benefited Nigeria. Didn't you read what was written? Inflation isn't going to be a significant concern as it would be managed by competition and other market parameters. |

wink2015: Ecowas my foot......come up with a better reason. As Nigerians our duty is to Nigeria and not ECOWAS. No one blames Ecowas when things are bad |

karo93: No one blames Ecowas when things are bad? has Nigeria ever complained to ecowas? this is a trade issue, not some village meeting. if as a country you feel that neighbors and unscrupulous people are smuggling goods into the nation, its the countries duty to let the body know.to find the best solution to solve it, there are countries that are not aware of the development. it would be fair to let them know to give them a timeline to make necessary adjustments and also punish the defaulting counties to ensure the goals that bind all the nations together in trade come to reality, You don't stiff trade in the guise of curbing smuggling, this is an issue suffered by nations across the world. no one is exempted. so you find ways that will create a balance. Nigeria is creating so many enemies. if they put restrictions on your products do you know it will affect Nigeria and its position in the region? do you know there is a big vacuum of supply in trade in west Africa because Nigerians cant export to other nations via the land border? do you think the tasde routes will br waiting fo your whenever you feel like opening the borders? |

ordbrandco: Your points are valid under the assumption that nigeria actually exports anything.... Our exports are not much.....thats why the government is bold enough to do this. We are a consumer nation so closed borders hurts our neighbours much more than it will ever hurt us Our natural resource is our population......one-sixth of Africa is in Nigeria.....its high time we started arm twisting n milking other nations with this gift. We dont need to be fair or nice to our neighbours. We just need to make it big. America has bleeped up so many countries in the world left right centre and they are still respected. 1 Like |
