Border closure is the new song at least for the remaining part of the year. Although it is a good development until our neighbouring countries get sense.

APC have already added it to their achievements. Useless and idiotic party without any blueprint for governance.
It's a great achievement if you dont know.

They are determined for this closure

Hardnews:
Godwin Emefiele, governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), says the nation’s land borders will remain closed until neighbouring countries meet the requirements for it to be reopened.

Emefiele said this on Monday while speaking to journalists after a meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari in Abuja.
The federal government had closed the country’s land borders to importing and exporting of all items in a bid to curb illegal trading activities by Nigeria’s neighbours.

Hameed Ali, comptroller-general of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), had said that Nigeria’s borders will remain closed until the country and its neighbours agree on existing ECOWAS protocol on movement.

Despite several calls by stakeholders for the re-opening of the borders, Emefiele said the affected countries must first have “concrete engagements” on mutual anti-smuggling policies.

He explained that the smuggling of goods through these countries undermines Nigeria’s economic policy.

“We are not saying that the borders should be closed in perpetuity, but that before the borders are reopened, there must be concrete engagements with countries that are involved in using their ports and countries as landing ports for bringing in goods meant for local consumption, it is understandable,” Emefiele said.

“But the fact that those products are landed in their countries and then transshipped or smuggled into Nigeria is something that I am sure you all agree as Nigerians we should not allow happening because it undermines our economic policy, it undermines our own desire to make sure that industries are alive and jobs are created in Nigeria.”

Emefiele further said that the country’s rice and poultry farmers have, since the closure, recorded improved sales.

“Recently, and this is the absolute truth, about two weeks before the border closure, the chairman of the Rice Processors Association, incidentally, he owns Umza Rice in Kano, called me and said that all the rice millers and processors are having in their warehouses nothing less than 25,000 metric tons of milled rice. That this rice has been unsold because of the smuggling and dumping through Republic of Benin and other border posts that we have in the country and that he would want us to do something about it,” he said.

“Secondly, we also have members of the Poultry Association of Nigeria who also complained that they have thousands of crates of eggs that they could not sell together with even some of the processed chickens also arising from the problem of smuggling and dumping of poultry products into Nigeria.

“A week after the borders were closed, the same rice millers association called to tell us that all the rice that they had in their warehouses have all been sold. Indeed, a lot of people have been depositing money in their accounts and they have even been telling them ‘please hold on don’t even pay money yet until we finished processing your rice’.

“The Poultry Associations have also come to say that they have sold all their eggs, they have sold all their processed chickens and that demand is rising.”
According to him, the improved sale of rice and poultry products is the benefit of closing the borders.

“So when you asked, what is the benefit of the border closure on the economy of Nigeria, I just used two products – poultry and rice. The benefit is that it has helped to create jobs for our people, it has helped to bring the integrated rice milling that we have in the country back into business again and they are making money. Our rural communities are bubbling because there are activities because rice farmers are able to sell their paddy. The poultry business is also doing well, and also maize farmers who produce maize from which feeds are produced are also doing business. These are the benefits,” he said.
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) had
backed Nigeria’s closure of its borders.

I MAKE BOLD TO STATE HERE THAT THERE IS NO NEED FOR THE BORDER CLOSURE.

The border closure is a violation of the ECOWAS TREATY on free movement of goods and services across the west african region signed by Nigeria, Ghana, Togo, Benin Republic and some other west african states.

The federal government should find out what is making our produce or products less competitive in the market and find solutions to it.

Why is the federal government starting what they can not finish.

What happen in 3 years time when the present leadership vacates the presidency?

There're more goods leaving Nigeria to neigboring countries than them to Nigeria.

Otherwise, the border should remain closed forever. Nigeria must not listen to any stakeholder for their selfish interest until the neighbouring countries meet the laid down conditions.
Was it not stakeholders that they listened to before they closed the borders at first? Rice farmers and poultry farmer at the expense of the other sectors of the economy? Really where do these so called economics get trained pls

This is what using your advantage for leverage means. As the 7th most populated country out of a 195 countries in the world, we have bargaining chips. We may be corrupt, mismanaged and lagging in development, but we are still a mostly consumer based economy and everybody wants to sell us their goods. It's high time Benin republic, Togo and Ghana realize that they their economy will spiral into a great depression if they don't meet our terms.

Viva Nigeria!!
Yes na..imagine after shipping rice from abroad to Benin, they will collect shipping and custom duty money, and then smuggle to Nigeria at no cost.Meaning that our government don't even gain nothing

grin Honestly,i've been wondering what our closed borders has to do with the Ghanian traders...anyways,we Nigerians aren't tired of their threats,so they can keep pouring them on us until they realise their wrongs, and do the needful ASAP.

Look I support nigeria in doing whatever is necessary to curb smuggling but why bring Ghana into the equation una no tire abi Ghana has legitimate trade with Nigeria so at deserved some bit of heads up besides ur beef is with Benin Republic and some unscrupulous Nigerians who benefit from the smuggling.
Please let Ghana be..

It takes time bro.

Increase in demand births increase in prizes. Yes.

But it will open people’s eyes to see the lucrative aspect of those goods whose prizes increased, many will dabble into the business to cash out too. On the long run, there will be so many producers, they will flood the markets, now the supply will surpass the demand. And when that happens, prizes will be reduced and determined by the consumers.

All these things take time.

I am not a fan on the APC , but they got this right.
All they need to do is to improve on electricity and roads for transportation of those goods from rural areas.

How can they ship rice from Asia to Benin Republic, pay duty and tax to their government and then smuggle it to Nigeria? That is unfair to Nigerian government. Same thing as cars too and other products banned in Nigeria.

If you can’t bring it in legally, den don’t bring it in at all through the back door

I don't support buhari or Apc but I support this idea of border closure, genuine importers can use our ports, when the borders are eventually open, only goods locally produce in African countries should be allowed in through the land borders, customs should even be allowed to raid markets n shops for smuggled goods, let those who are ready to labour enjoy their sweat.

Of course, they're still doing it but not in the scale as before. There was news the other day here on Nairaland about customs seizing some rice in the bush. And I can assure you there're thousands of such bush roads right now that nobody is maning or even talking about.

Over time the border closure would become self defeating because as long as there's demand for foreign rice in Nigeria and there's supply in neigboring countries, rice WILL continue to be smuggled into Nigeria. Law of economics says so and there's nothing anybody can do about it.

The solution is not closing border. Its very shortsighted and dunmb. How long do they want to close the border? Why closing a border that you'll eventually open? You see, its dumb to close it.

The solution is go to Thailand, India, Vietbam, and bring those rice specimen that Nigerians love and grow them here in Nigeria. This's the only solution to that but, of course, this would sound idiotic to these blind men called leaders.

Perhaps over time Nigerians will learn to appreciate Nigerian rice cultivars. In order words, have you considered the psychological perspective to this. Firstly, there is empirical evidence, it would seem, suggesting that when Nigeria rice are repackaged as foreign, Nigerians patronise these as lustily as the proprietors pocket profits from the sale. Secondly, major reasons given by Nigerians for preferring foreign rice isn’t taste but that detritus saturates Nigeria rice the way it does not forign ones. Incidentally, do you know for certain the various cultivars grown by Nigerian farmers and if they are significantly different to the foreign strains you suggest Nigeria import for growing?

Nigeria is still subsidizing petrol, The increment in petrol coming from Nigeria is not up to 60 naira. As for Rice and cooking oil, it's still entering 9ja, only that the customs charge more. The FG policy is not sustainable, Béninoise are not ready to abide by the request of Nigeria. And they are bringing in goods from Nigeria also, the only thing is that its a little more expensive. I'm a Nigerian living in cotonou and I'm an auto dealer, my customers still come to buy cars every week and they get to their destination safely. Border closure is not working the way they thought it would. Nigerian borders are too porous to Police and the coustoms is very corrupt. They should find a lasting solution to smuggling, not closing borders.
