Hmmm.

Lesson learned.
Stick to your mother tongue. You can't tell the organizers what should be the criteria, or for them to change their rule just to accommodate a first time entry from Nigeria.

That excuse about English being the official language is watery at best. Promote your culture instead. At worse, use pidgin English. Believe me, Caucasians get intrigued by it. Same like Jamaican patois.

I love Genevieve but to be honest , that movie was mediocre .

Place it side by side with other movies submitted for best foreign language and it looks extremely bland .

Having 500 plus languages is no excuse .

The requirement for the category has always been clear ....best FOREIGN language .

No need to sensationalize and act pitiable .

A lot of countries are multi lingual but still manage to showcase their cultures and primary language.

you state my thought exactly. i watch that movie once and i could say it was not interesting to some extent.

what i like about the movie is the picture quality and the way people organise in the scene.

3/10 for me

Appreciate your own. That’s how an American said she enjoyed watching “Chief Daddy” on twitter and Nigerians camped in her mention telling her the movie was rubbish. How’s Lionheart mediocre. Mediocre of all words. Someone’s sweat that was considered forOscars

The same people that complained the Igbo was too much are the ones agreeing with the organisers that Igbo wasn't enough. Lol

Read and understand. The whole brouhaha has nothing to do with the movie being mediocre, but the fact that the movie was disqualified for using more English time than Igbo language time whilst English is our official language. The basis for the disqualification is preposterous. It has nothing to do with the movie not being up to par with other films selected in its category.

Rules are rules and they spelled it out correctly. Maybe she should have submitted it in another category.

Bland, mediocre or not, the sheer fact of it getting that trail-blazing Oscar nomination is enough testament to the quality in that movie. Believe me, that matters more than your appraisal.

The film portrayed the Nigerian cultural reality even to a sublime level. You can not be in Nigeria and not know that English language, with all its Nigerian slants, is our language of first choice. So many families have even outlawed the speaking of the local language in favour of English language.

Without talking too much, that is our reality, and it is what she portrayed. If she had done much more of it in Igbo, then it would not have been really Nigerian--people like you wouldn't have been able to really watch it to the extent of even forming an opinion about it.

There is nothing 'sensational' about the fact that Nigeria is a country of 500+ disparate ethnic identities, and that the English language [with its Nigerian slants] is the bridge between us. It is the FACT.

P.S.: Genny is in a class of her own!

God bless you a bunch, same thing I clarify on Twitter and some bunch think iam not patriotic, why do we Nigerians love overlooking rules and regulations, the criteria for that category has always been there and clear, except if they change it in the future.

Genny & other Nigerian producers/directors should just take a cue from this to promote our cultural heritage more in their movies.
Been nominated in the first place is huge in my opinion.

So the 20mins they were speaking yiboe in the movie was for it to be accepted by oscars? The oscars team lied. Reason they rejected the movie was because watching chickens mating is way more interesting than that boring flick
