There's money in engineering, my regret is I got to know this very late.. Brother no matter the grade you have after graduation, just make sure you are knowledgeable and useful to yourself and the society. I made second class lower and not regretting.

Thanks for your candid advice sir.

I actually want to learn from people's experience, not focusing on their regrets.
If you want to be a chemical engineer, go and look for a chemical engineer now. Find out where he works and defindr how to work there. Abi, when you graduate, that's the kind of place you will work.

what you make out of engineering depends on you.sucess is individual. Some did engineering and were really sucessful and some not so sucessful and some change profession due to no job.i wil advise you to focus mainly on your studies with no distraction. aim for very good grades, big companies only take people with good grades, takes your internship (Siwes) seriously and try to get a good practical experience in a good company .make moat use of your holidays to learn software related to your field and always be update on development in your field. visit sucessful people in your field and learn from them. try also to look for opportunities in your field .try to look at the major companies in your field and see what they want from graduates and put your best in it .Expect the best to happen to you and then you will receive the best, believe in God and then believe you can make it.i studied mechanical engineering and I have been opportune to meet people who studied same in other countries, no much diferent between an engineer in Nigeria and that in another country .the only different is that they have exposures to some facilities which we dont have here in Nigeria.Academically, a good engineering student in Nigeria can compete well with other student abroad when given the opportunity

INTROVERT1:
To start with, I congratulate you on your admission. Basically, education system in this country has been deteriorating with little or no attention from the respective body.

Studying engineering would be one of the best thing that could happen to you if you put in your best. My advise is that you utilize google, YouTube and other online resources to garner useful knowledge for yourself. In school, you will be thought theories, even theories that are outdated. Look up to the scholars in your department, stick with them, they will probably put you on right track.

Learn latest softwares, go for different training, learn programming languages and the likes. If you do all these, I'm sure you will thank me later.

I wish you success as you move to the next phase of life.

And you depend solemnly on Engineering for your medical equipment. Even presently you have Biomedical Engineering, using fluid mechanics, structural mechanics and applied mechanics to study cell behaviour, tissues, bones, cancer and lots more.

Engineering enhanced the work convenience of a whole lot of professions no doubt... But as we both know.. good health is the most important thing in life then money comes second

Terrible! And what of engineers who design hyperbaric chambers, incubators and suction units? Can you design one from scratch?

What of the fine arts graduates who draw all the most delicate parts of the body shown in medical textbooks?

Hope you know how to draw

Drawing is more of an inborn ability...

Forget it! Drawing is an important technical skill in science. Dont you remember during dissections how they used to scold us when we couldnt draw that stuff very well?

People study for years to hone their craft and it is useful to everybody

Just admit that what you wrote there was arrogant and unnecessary

Here, are you referring money to Engineering.? Good health and professionalism required good equipment, not just only giving drugs. My point is, you don't give importance of one over the other. Both are important as you can imagine.

You will not regret studying engineering so far you do the following.
1. Develop very deep interest in Mathematics.
2. Make sure you master this course 'TECHNICAL DRAWING' or Engineering Drawing. Go extra miles to study the course and understand every bit of it.
2. When you are taking courses like Fluid Mechanics, Thermodynamics, Heat and Mass Transfer, Strength of Materials, etc, ensure you don't miss lectures. Go online to know more about them. Do not depend only on what you learn from lecturers.
3. Do not play with your assignment. I mean try to do your assignment yourself.
4. For Engineering Design courses, learn to be creative, work with your fellow students and try to initiate ideas.
5. Engineering is 60% practical. While in school, make use of every opportunity to experience practical application. Visit mechanic workshops, building sites, blacksmith, furniture workshop, oil rig, panel beating workshop, etc.
6. Ensure you make good use of your SIWES time.
7. Meet with experienced engineers and learn from them.
8. Graduate with 2.1 minimum.

Absolutely No! I'm gradually moving into I.T, and having an engineering background gives me a certain edge over traditional computer science graduate. I also have a better understanding of how to integrate programming into hardware "embedded system". And that's the way forward now, even for big tech companies.

Learn MATLAB. In your final years a lot of people will be doing projects requiring mathematical simulations. You could be paid upwards of 50k for doing that. Just dont forget to equally study as well.

I think you are intending to work in oil and gas industry by choosing to study Chemical Engineering, however there's little or no platform for you to actualise your dream in Nigeria with your course of study.

Mechanical or Electrical engineering will be better from my personal experience. The percentage of Chemical Engineers needed in oil and gas industry is very low compare to M & E engineers.

Another point to note is that technology is practically taken over oil and gas industry and technically speaking, a chemical Engineer will find it difficult to migrate unlike M&E Engineers.

If my first sentence is correct, change your course of study asap and thank me 7 years from now.

As for " regret " , if you come out with a poor result in this saturated labour market, SORRY.

I have no regret studing engineering because I drive joy in solving engineering related problems. If you have passion for whatever you engage your hands in, surely the reward will be satisfying. I have adopted the physiology of "living to work " rather than "working to live."
I have also discovered that money alone doesn't solve all problems. High quality professional services rendered to people at reasonable charges may open ways for you and even for your children.
Money follows every good product and service. Be diligent and enjoy whatever you lay your hands on, then the barrier between you and poverty will become very wide.
Simply put , you are insulated from lack!

Guy, your profile shows and tells that you like football and passionate about music. I hope you are making the right decision. I've come to realize that there is not need to invest so much time for profession that one do not intend to practice for the rest of his life.

I wish you all the best.

Yes and No.

No regrets, I actually enjoyed it (I still enjoy it, it is all I've got) and graduated top of my department.

Yes, the only regret I've got is, I studied it in a polytechnic and I can't get my dream job, due to the lingering problem of dichotomy.

My brother, this life no balance at all. One leg long pass the other.

No regrets.

I studied mechanical engineering and I have over 10 years experience.

Before I decided on engineering, I considered medicine, industrial design and architecture, even law. I looked at myself and my skills and looked for a course that will bridge them all, engineering did it for me. I am a hands-on person. I love to make and fix things.

Initially, some engineering jobs won't give you the money you dreamt about but when you gain competencies, you can leverage them for better paying jobs.

Don't let the dichotomy weigh you down, there are some exclusive jobs for HND holders. And after a while, employers don't look at your first degree anymore but your competencies and track record,
