So far, the basic truth that stands out is that many nigerians need power but want to get it as cheap as possible. That's not an easy task either.
For over Eight months now, I have have lived absolutely on DC lightening 24Hrs, can effectively charge my phones 24Hrs, 12hrs usage of a dc fan and run other moderately powered appliances for 3-4Hrs a day and the system still works. All for not more than 100k.
To achieve this, just think more on DC power usage and high power management especially if you are off-grid like me. Those around you would never understand how come but its simple science.
Good morning! Pls I would like to know how much you got yours. Cause, I need something just like yours Now!

I think you should look for a 40ah battery for around 20-25k and a 1000 watts inverter with a built in 20amp charger for arnd 13k. a lower wattage inverter will still serve you. say a 500 or 300 watts inverter which may cost abt 8-10k. I think it's better you go for the 1000watts cos it allows for more gadgets and the difference in price ain't much. for the battery, you can go for 2 pcs of 18ah battery (36ah) at 8k each to save cost. if you still got cash to spare, go for a 16k 100watts China solar panel.

Hi bro, u are just the few here who stated the truth with sincerity. Pls, I will be sending you a message, kindly do accept it so that i can contact you privately for guide. I want to install this and I am ready to spend 150k for this as long as it can carry me well. Your sincere guide will help me. I live where I get up to 7 hours of electricity per day on a normal day, so I need at least 10 hours to completely feel comfortable with electricity. I dont need much to carry, just my tv, laptop and fans.

Please, I am so done with MTN lumos box. Imagine charging it in this harmattan from morning till night and getting only 50%? I have called customer care twice and they keep saying clean the panel (I o=don tire to clean), do this , do that. Does anyone have an idea of how I can get a cheap solar panel here in Delta?

1KVA 1000 WATT SOLAR SYSTEM + 1 FREE SOLAR FAN + 5 LIGHTING POINT

This 1kva (1000 watt)solar system is very economical,durable
and energy efficient. The lighting points are DC 12V low energy
and connected directly to the battery which gives better
performance and longer runtime. It comes with 1 solar standing
fan which consumes very low energy( just 10 watt) but blows
like a turnado. The fan can work 24hrs directly with
nepa, battery and imverter which makes them all weather. This is
truely an efficient solar system. It comes with a 100ah
battery and 150 watt mono crystaline solar panel (mono
crystaline panels are known to perform better than
polyscrystaline panels). It also comes with a 1000 watt
inverter which can be used to charge laptops and also to watch
tv.Our engineer will install it and ensure that the lighting
points are at the designated areas you want them to be in your
home or shop. Also an AC socket will be installed in your room

When there is good sunlight you can use all you've mentioned but at night you have to use it based on the battery level. I never said am using it for 24 hours because I don't stay at home for 24 hours. All am saying is that it pays me for 150 naira per day because I use it for the most important things to me.
With 150 naira per day, I get value for my money

No a bad idea for shop owners. PHCN gives me 25,000 every month. This is perfect for me. We close by 5pm sef. Fan, small TV, Decoder and light is fine. We will do without the AC. Perfect

What of Star times Solar? Please add this to the review. My friend bought inverter and 2 batteries 100amps each, that is what he is using and it is okay. It requires initial capital of roughly 200k. He charges it with generator or PHCN light.

Honestly, this mtn thing is slavery. It's highly limiting and since many Nigerians are ignorant abt solar systems, they easily get fascinated by the stories of marketers of this power bank. Let's see....

1. 100watt mono panel = 25k (mtn Lumos is 80watt)
2. 30a charge controller = 13k (with 6k, u can get it from aliexpress or jumia overseas shipping. Buy 2 just incase. u know China now)
3. 100ah battery = 50k (+-5k-10k depending on type. Note that mtn Lumos is just arnd 26ah)
4. 2000watt inverter = 25k (this one will power ur led 32incher tv) ( u can also get a local inverter. most start at 25k for 1kva)
5. 10watt ac bulbs = 1k each (6pcs will be 6k)
6. Wires and miscellaneous = 5k

Total estimate = 124k. (note that this is an estimate and prices will vary slightly based on ur location and type of products u buy.)

with this set up,
ur battery will charge at 100watt/12v= 8a per hr. so for ur 100ah battery, u need 100/8= 12.5hrs of sunlight to take it from 0 to 100%. also note that efficiency ain't 100% so assume 70-80% efficiency of panels which means longer charging time. For practical purposes however, I don't expect u to use ur battery to 0%. I expect u shouldn't go below 50% usage to extend it's lifespan. more so, at 50%, the battery shld return to 100% in like 7-8hrs based on the above setup.

For load,
6 bulbs is 60watt
laptop is arnd 50watts
led TV is abt 150watts
decoder 15watts
DVD player 30watts
standing fan 50watts

I assume these things could be used simultaneously for most people. thus..
total = 355 watts (even a 1000watt inverter shld handle this.) also note that rated power of inverters are just max output. during actual usage, continuous supply is said to be half its capacity. eg, if ur need is 500watts, u need a 1000watt inverter.

now recall our 355watts power need?
355/12v =30amps.
since battery is 100ah, we can only get 3hrs power with the above setup.

If we remove the TV and by extension decoder and dvd, we have like abt 7hrs power supply. always remember that efficiency can't be 100%.
For me though, with a TV card, I can watch TV through my laptop so I need not power my TV. more so, just 2 led 5watt lights is all I need. I am planning to get a very portable fan as well. with this system, u will get x3 of what mtn system gives.

As someone said earlier, access to money to buy everything at once is the issue but I think paying mtn 4500 for 5yrs is even a bigger issue. That's slavery.

Alternative, get a used ups for 4k, get an 18ah battery for 8k, disconnect the ups battery and connect urs. with this, u can power ur laptop and charge ur phones cos the ups serves as inverter and battery charger. note that the ups don't charge fast.
Don, I have two questions please.
I use a gaming laptop and it uses a 135w charger. Are their solar systems that can give that much output?
Secondly, what should I be looking out for when trying to build a solar system that can still be charged with NEPA light? Because most of the systems being sold here do not say anything about being able to charge with NEPA
Re: A Sincere Review Of Mtn Lumos Solar Electricity by donpata(m): 10:36am On Mar 31, 2020
JayJayGee:
.

1. Yes, the wattage of ur laptop is even insignificant when looking at what solar power can handle. There are small solar systems that power AC's. Your wattage is less than 200 so a small 500watt inverter of about N10k will do (though without nepa charging).

2. There is an inverter with charger attached to it. The cheaper one is about 20k but if you get public power over reasonable hours, I will advice you get a pure sine wave inverter like Eastman or Mopower. Goes for about 40k. It works with Nepa and can do Solar as well.

Lastly, I can't give u a good quote now cos it depends on your budget. However, without a panel, all you need is an inverter and battery. 100ah battery is abt N50k. Fairly good pure sine wave inverter is N40k for about 500watts. Cheaper Modified sine wave (which will still serve you) is abt N20k-N30k. 'China' type will be less. These inverters can charge with Nepa and solar.

However, if you decide to add a solar component to the system, add extra N30K for panel, controller and wires.
