the first question, do you have a mentor who can guide you through the minefields? this is very important. our mentor already has experience of what goes on at that level

you get into management by technical competence, you stay and advance by emotional intelligence. 1+1 is no longer 1, or at least you can't always tell your superiors that outright.

you already understand the company philosophy/management style - you must decide if rocking the boat when there are issues is counter productive

Good luck

You certainly can't avoid office politics and it can get very ugly for you if you don't play well or u play it with sympathy. I overcame mine by simply holding a leverage against each and everyone of of my colleagues. Don't underestimate the power of blackmail, for Instance we did some stealing and shared the loot and now I'm holding that against everyone of them that I will expose them. They were like "well we will all go down together" I said yes we will but I'm not the one living in a free company house and enjoying 24hours electrity. They just kept mute.

Same way you handle Nigerian politics. You are with the wining party, your main concern is that there are more qualified candidates but your "godfather(s)" appeased your village people and now you are "there"!
So therefore grin........just remember that PDP ran the show for a long time before APC took over. Let me not analyse further but always have a plan B should they zone the position to the "south" much later....enjoy your new position and yes, when next I come to Lagos we gonna pop some bottles. Even if na bottle water/ pepsi grin
You guys do YouTube stuff? Ikeja??

My advice is that every leader has a style so use yours and don't join the crowd.

no sir... It is & can be learnt.
I've several books on leadership in my shelve, & also studied Biz Admin. in uni.

To your second paragraph, leadership style should depend on each situation a leader finds himself. You can't be nice n friendly when critical decisions involving others are to be made. That'll call for an autocratic leadership style. Etc

With your bosses, kiss and lick those asses like they were the best thing you ever tasted. It will be worth it at the end of the month when the paycheck comes in. Be the psycophant and fan their egos, be the chew toy when they need to sharpen their teeth and claws, atleast until you have acquired enough means to Branch out on your own. Then you can tell them how very miserable and sad their lives are, that they have you prick you with their little joysticks to feel good about themselves.
God forbid that a make a mere man a god in my life. There is nothing more powerful than a man who can speak up for himself, doesn't matter who is involved. Lick the behind of a mere man? Speak the truth wisely and don't be anyone's pupet. Stand for truth ALWAYS! BE TRUE TO YOURSELF ALWAYS.

Do your work
Get paid
Go home
People in an office are just work colleagues. Not buddies. Not friends. Not companions. No Bleep buddies.
Until we all understand this, office politics won't stop.

is that what God asked him to do? Deny his wife? I can't lick anyone's behind, I don't care who you are. My boss asked me why I don't compliment her look, lol. If you want compliment, ask for it, I will give u. I compliment my good acquaintances, because I feel like not because I want to stroke any superiors ego.

let no man glory in man. That's what my Bible says. It's God that can promote a man, not a fellow man. Yes God will use men to bless you but let Him, God take the glory not ur "ass licking" skills

Office politics is the most dangerous to get involved in.

Make your rules or principle known to all and keep to it. Don't be seen as a weak leader. But at the same time, be gentle and accommodating. Issue warnings and query after two strikes. Make sure that your warnings are always in black and white just in case someone want to put you in trouble.
If you want to progress often, always be available. Your bosses talks good of someone who is always available and servicable(if there is a word like that).

Delegate responsibilities to your subordinates. Make sure that everyone is carried along while doing that and always be on the lookout for exceptional qualities and always reward hard work.

You will live longer, if you can navigate around office politics.

But the elephant in the room is if you understood what office politics is all about...

As for your superiors, never be seen to be in a particular camp.

And stop Talking too much.....

Don't change who you are apart from the talkative aspect of who you are. Remain friendly with those under you and go out for lunch with them. Pay attention to their demure. Ask questions when their faces are not that bright. Show concern. Ask after their families (I discovered that people feel part of you when u enquire about their families and even drop one or two naira for them to buy things like biscuit, etc for their kids).

When it come to challenges at work, even if you have the ideas on how to solve them, intentionally ask them for their opinions and of course chip in yours...
Thumbs up for you. This is not only applicable to office politics, it can be applied to national politics. If Bubu can read this, Nigeria will at least slow its retrogression .
