I don't know why i'm laughing while reading your post.English language just like any other language is liable to evolution.Nobody is a monopoly of English language not even the queen....Everyday many new words are added in the English language so it's not possible for one to be perfect in the language.

Nigerians don't even speak anything close to the so-called "queens English" you said we adopted. What we are speaking i wouldn't say it's not correct, however, that's what i termed"Nigerian English language".

It's not only us that adopted English language as their lingua franca...
Countries like Egypt,India,Hong kong,Canada,Etc uses English language as their official language but they can't communicate fluently and effectively with it even their elites and educated folks still stutter when making a public speech.Does that mean they ain't intelligent?

Can you write, speak and read your local dialect perfectly well?if not, trust me you ain't smart according to you because that's the language you were brought up with
. I don't even know how to respond to your last comment. It seems we are just moving around the same thing. Let me however add by saying that all our Nigerian indigenous languages are our first languages or mother tongue or L1 while English French Italian etc are 2nd languages or foreign languages or L2 All nations have this classification too.No language is better than the other. However we have diaglossic condition in Nigeria. There is diaglossia when languages are given different roles and functions .Nigeria has given more prominence to English than other languages ..That is why our mother tongue is being deemphasized .The language provisions in the constitution and National Policy on Education hold no water too.
.We need to revamp our mother toque and change our attitude to it.In the mean time English stays as our language of communication for official purposes in Nigeria.

English doesn't determine intelligence... my grandpa couldn't read nor write...but he could fix a wall clock, radio... knew alot about astronomy and science as Early as 1940...

English is just a language... can you read or write Swahili? can the British read or write Yoruba,Igbo or Hausa?? if not then there is no shame if you can't read in English also.
An English man will not come and be reading Yoruba, he will read the English that he knows. Why cant the woman read Hausa and call a translator. Common sense....

Den de speech should have been delivered in Hausa language. Was she addressing a conference in Chartam House in England? Is Nassarawa not in Hausa land? Instead of making some unpardonable blunders in elementary english, use your native language, especially if you are addressing your kinsmen.

did anybody force her to read in English?
Even the Swahili u are talking about has rules governing it

Why didn't she write and read in the language she understands
Don't kill yourself over nothing. She is the first lady! If you think she is not qualified, go remove her. As for the speech incident, she doesn't appear uneducated. Her pronunciation was not bad. It proves that she can actually read.
I am pretty sure she was either stage-frightened, or the speech was poorly constructed, or she has sight defects. But to say she is illiterate, hey, only a dumb embittered person would conclude such about her after seeing the video.

The husband (governor) might even find it more difficult to read his own speech than the first lady.

Who is the basterd that gave a very poorly written speech to first lady? He left out words, put verb before noun, no punctuations, hard to see fullstops and commas. He should be sacked! grin
The woman no sabi read simple.

English is more than just a language in Nigeria. It is also a good indicator of how learned a person is.

I agreed fully. However there are people called interpreters. She could have used one as a trend. Nonetheless, I admired the lady's bravery.

It becomes a proof of intelligence when you were born and nurtured in an English speaking country.

Your grandpa couldn't read nor write but knew a lot about astronomy and science. We are not stupid here you know smiley
you are not stupid but you sound stupid... you don't need to read or write in another man's language to look in the sky and observe the moon ànd the sun. I didn't tell you he built a rocket.
If ancient astronomers could figure a bit about all that solar stuff as way back as a thousand years ago... why can't my grandpa in 1940s? because he was a Black man?
na inferiority dey worry you bro! My grandpa was a natural genius with high IQ... whatever he puts his mind in he figures it out. During the Nigerian Civil war he played a part in the development of locally made guns and other weapons used in the war, Language is not intelligence bro. it's the society we are in that made it seem like so... the reason the first lady decided to force herself into using English is to impress people like you who thinks English is God's personal language. to dissapoint you, Jesus spoke Hebrew... Mohammed Arabic!

Illiterate woman in position. Is this the only wife?
I pity this woman. This video is coming out at a time that Nigerians have no chill. I suggest she be closely watched to prevent her from committing suicide.

Now, who wrote, typed and proofread the speech? Somebody's job is on the line for this .
However, this does not absolve the woman of any blame. She's clearly deficient and probably not well-educated.
What is your own?

They didn't foist their culture on us.We see our language and culture as inferior hence the adoption of their language.

Hong Kong is colonised by The British buh 70%of the population still speak cantonese(chinese language),even the 30% that speaks English language isn't fluent or perfect in it.Their politicians use their local Language to deliver public speak.
What i'm trying to say in essence is that English is just a language(means of communication)and not a measure of intelligence.....

I'm not perfect in it buh i finished with second class upper(3.97cgpa).I barely speak English language when conversing with people unless i know you don't understand my local language(igbo)
we are saying the same thing
hong kong is white skin thats why they are able to organise their language to be in the fore front
blacks are yet to organise themselves likewise.
who do u blame?
but before we are able to organise ourselves for our languages to be in the fore front lets be making do with the organised language

tell me the african black country that is making use of their local dialect as their official lingua franca
NB : I am Igbo too and also a second class upper product

presentation skills are still part of the English language

if her speech was poorly presented? please tell me the name of the speech writer so that we can blame her if not we will continue to blame the person who read it out without proof reading it
