Ministerial Screening: Lawan Asks Amaechi To “Take A Bow” by OddsIsland(m): 3:25pm On Jul 24, 2019
The Senate President on Wednesday protected the immediate past Minister of Transport, Rotimi Amaechi, at the ministerial screening, asking him not to answer any questions but “take a bow”.

Lawan said Amaechi, being a former Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, was a lawmaker and thus should be protected from questioning.

Incidentally, Amaechi was grilled by the 8th Senate led by Senator Bukola Saraki.

The Senate Minority Leader, Eyinnaya Abaribe, however, said senators from Rivers State wanted to ask questions.

Lawan quickly rejected the move to question Amaechi.

The Senate President, who has been accused of being President Muhammadu Buhari’s stooge, was, however, in for a shock when Gombe-Central lawmaker, Senator Danjuma Goje, noted that the Senate rules do not extend the “take a bow” privilege to state lawmakers.

Goje, who is also a former House of Assembly member, said he wasn’t shown a similar gesture when he was nominated a minister as he was fully grilled by the Senate.

In his response, the Senate President said even though the Senate rules do not “apply to state lawmakers”, Amaechi should be extended the courtesy.

The Senate President said, “I agree totally that it is not in our rules but we can regulate ourselves even without things in the rules. So, we adopt this because we should extend this privilege to the House of Assembly. I think there is nothing wrong in that. The nominee (Amaechi) is just a beneficiary by chance. We are not doing this for him.”

We no longer have parliament. These are just men chosen to rubber stamp any Buhari initiative.

If Bubu takes RUGA to nation assembly, they'd fight themselves to prove to Bubu they're the best azz lickers.

Saraki's 8th senate is still the best to beat..

Imagine Senators teaching the Senate president what is being condoled and what is not, because they even felt the rubber stamping is just too much.

Smart senate president. Amaechi has forged a formidable political alliance. Wike take note, Amaechi is strategizing - 2023 elections less than 1400 days away.

So, a minister that was part of the last dispensation should not be questioned about how he utilized his office?

Oh, Saraki!

No single ministerial nominee has ever been rejected by the senate since 1999 till date. So ehy do they even bother with screening?

...and for those shouting Saraki senate Saraki senate, was any ministerial candidate ever rejected by Saraki senate?

Hmmmmmmm, this report is not a true representation of what transpired.
According to the SP, he said the house (this I believe includes all or principal officers) agreed to include state house of assembly in the exemption, which no one disagree with or claim to be false, which Ameachi was just a beneficiary by chance and not by target.
IMO, I don't like this take a bow nonsense, the even if you are a senate member as at the time of nomination, you should be questioned by the house on what you intend doing as an appointed minister. 1/3 of a state elected you to represent them, of which interest varies, while as a minister you are working for the interest of all Nigerians.

Rivers PDP wanted Chibuike Amaechi to be treated as an 'orphan' but the Senate President showed up as his 'father'. Interesting partisan political moves.

By the way, the policy of "bow and go" is a negative one.

Has any ministerial nominee ever been rejected by any senate since Nigeria's history?

Lawan said Amaechi, being a former Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, was a lawmaker and thus should be protected from questioning.

This is so wrong... Amaechi was, but is not currently a lawmaker. He is currently being screened to be (re)instated as a minister, and questions should be asked about his suitability and past performance. They can still speed-up his confirmation but at least let there be due process.

I really tire for our leaders, doing the wrong things then wondering why other countries are much better than ours.

It would have been a better argument if Lawan had said Amaechi should be excused from questioning because 'HE IS A RETURNING MINISTER' and has been previously grilled at his first nomination with the 8th Senate.

Simple.

No big deal.
Amaecgi was a former Speaker, not a floor member.
He has also been grilled during the first nomination
