The issue really is perceptions, opinions and decisions.

Perceptions - People read deeper meanings to Nitigriti's post. I did not read much into it until I saw counter-posts. He probably did not attempt to talk down people's hustle.

Opinions - we all have different opinions which every human being need to respect. One can't force people to accept what you believe. Just talk and people that you influence will see you have a point(s).

Decisions - some have decided to do the hustle and make it big through it. If that's their decision, I believe they have their reasons. I don't think anyone has a right to make them feel they are dump and their decision is stupid. People can decide to change their decisions based on situation changes.

NB: this is not directed at anyone in particular but based on my opinion grin and inference drawn.

On being defensive and emotional, we are humans. Such happens when people don't want to look at contrary opinions.

True talk bro

Some plan to make it through it, while for some, it's a phase

The whole issue escalated so fast sha grin

With the caliber of people here and their energy, there are other things they can channel their energy to that will yield better than uber. That was the challenge

I don't see where anyone insulted the job[/b][/color]

This right here. We don't have a maid at home.there was a period when I was under serious pressure juggling chores, job and side hustle.

You wash dishes, do laundry. It is a never ending cycle. You do a design for three hours, you get paid 350k. You do housework for three hours, you get nothing.

You quickly learn about directing energy into what actually brings in money.

So Na Chinese get this nonsense

Be very afraid. People say Chinese are wicked, evil slavers, but that is just their work ethic. Oyibo will still worry small about bad press and stock market. Chinese are almost all backed by their government and don't give a fk about bad press or complaining workers

This is serious!
You haven't seen people that are working and doing masters? Let alone ordinary certification?

Much easier to do in civil service. I get the feeling thats where you are working. For A lot of private companies you will run yourself ragged.

I don't know how someone thinks he can decide which job is major or side hustle. They way people elevate white collar jobs and look down on other jobs which might even be more lucrative is funny.

Honestly, to think everyone is preaching multiple streams of income as the only way to meet up in this dwindling economy of ours & we still have people who think having a career in a mere paper called CV is shocking to say the least...lol

Let me even help you a little. Vulcanising, Bus conductors, Danfo drivers all fulfill the conditions to your questions... But it seems we just want to get emotional and miss the point from the beginning

The challenge was to channel our energy to alternate models that will be better than driving. What is wrong with that? Or is uber driving the "best job" on earth? Aren't there 1001 jobs that are far more better than this?

I don't know why we all are acting so defensively as if someone touched a nerve.

I have a friend (not on nairaland) that I introduced to uber driving. Recently, he told me he's stopping this December. I asked why. He told me he needs to pursue his career in Procurement and whatever... That the driving isn't giving him time to chase that dream. This is a man with kids that is using it to survive, and doing well probably. What is wrong with his decision?

Stop being emotional sir. The people you're arguing with are drivers too. They won't talk down on something that they used to keep body and soul

No one is being emotional Sir. However, I am only trying to drive home some points. Some take driving as side hustle while others take it as a full time business. It's just an individual thing.

No let's look at it this way, we are all striving to make ends meet through whatever legitimate way we can afford to make that happen. Hence, we venture into different trades, starting with the courses we were offered at the university, which might even not be the dream course we wanted to do, but for not wasting time at home, we decided to take on those courses and graduate with whatever results we got, landed a job we could with the result and got paid as much as we could get.

Now, if we decide tomorrow to seek for alternative/side hustle which can complement or supplement what we earn from our current job, do you feel it will be bad to quit the former job and go full-time into the one we see as side hustle?

Like I said, it's an individual thing. You have your dreams and aspirations, others have theirs. Mine might be that I want to become a great I.T professional known globally, the other person might just want to be known as a billionaire, also known globally. So I might see uber as a means to getting financial support to sponsor my professional courses in ICT, whereas someone else will be thinking on how to improve on the services uber offer and use that to develop his own platform.

The sister who is an accountant can have a breakthrough in the clothing line and decide to further her trade in that line of and quit her job if she sees a better prospect and income flow in that line of business, especially if she feels she also has this thing for fashion and designing.

Well, we are all here to learn and contribute. What do I know? (in the voice of radautoworks)

Sorry i don't get your point
Please can you rephrase

My job pays me 200k / month
My side hustle gives me 500k / month

I am not going anywhere in my job, so I am investing in certifications and training. These are not a guarantee of anything, other than hope.

Unless my side hustle is not sustainable, why should I continue to burn my energy on a job, when I can burn it on a side hustle and move to the next level?

What i am inferring is that you can afford to do this because your job is not taking your energy per se.

Lol

An uber driver starts 5am, some 4:30am and closes 9pm...Some stay as late as 11pm

They do this six times a week. So can you tell me when such a person enrolls, and prepares for his exams?

You have no idea what these people driving are committing in terms of energy, zeal and strength

You really don't have any idea

One can always decide when they start and when they close for the day.

I have an on going program I am running and driving on uber won't stop me from doing that.

With good time management one can plan ways to accommodate other activities which they feel will take them to where they are aiming at.

If you go to Lagos Island(Oke Arin), and you see those old women who carry loads on their head. If you tell the woman that she can earn a better living instead of carrying this, have you insulted her hustle?

Uber is really good. A life saver. Uber has helped me in the past. But if someone tells me "izzóu,
let's think of an idea that will help us make more money on uber and we will drive less", what is wrong in that?

Do you understand my view now?

I understand the "e-hailing as a side hustle" argument.

But what if I tell you there are better side hustles? For example, I know a guy who makes $650 every month salary from his side hustle. I can share screenshots of his Payoneer account. He writes book summaries for an European company from the comfort of his house.

I know other people in that same line of side hustle doing anything from $2,000 and above a month. Biko, press calculator, then come back let's reason if driving a cab up and down Lagos is a side hustle. worth your time and energy.
Oga speak for yourself, use yourself as an example. Tell us what job and side hustle you're doing and what you earn from them weekly/monthly. Stop all these stories/testimonies you read online as if life is a bed of roses. If it's easy to make $2000 monthly why are you here reading post and mentioning?

Most professional disciplines are very slow to climb. A side hustle can give you greater reward.... in the short term. The side hustle can even give a higher return in the long term, but pedigree matters too. After spending years studying a course and average start up salary is about N50k, (ask lawyers and architects) and my uber, Barbi g salon or car wash gives me higher returns, you think people will ditch their fledgling because of higher returns.

Guy I worked in a professional disciple for 14 years.

What you are talking about is called sunk cost fallacy. I invested millions in this project that is not yielding anything. If I invest just a little more I will finally hammer
rather than take the loss and move ob

There’s nothing emotional about my posts. By all means, do whatever works for you. Your friend that’s dropping the hustle entered for the wrong reasons and so has to exit in no time.

If the thing fits your plan, then go ahead, if not move on. Don’t come and start saying bla bla bla. You are seeing driving as a side thing that eats up all your time and what not. I ask you what thing pays that doesn’t take time? You want to eat your cake and have it?

Uber/bolt pays one of the best hourly rate in the country. So tell me why can’t one take it as a full time hustle?

No employer will fault you for putting uber/bolt as an experience on your CV. They’ll only just overlook it if it’s not relevant to them. There are ways you’d construct the CV narrating the JD.

Point is if you already have the defeated mindset about anything, then you’ll hardly make headway.

Let me be cruel and blunt here. If she was destined to be some sort of super accountant, she would be in one of the big four firms. She would be in a firm that pays for her training. She would not have the time for any side hustle, particularly a hustle that is not tied to her technical competence.

I think you guys are not understanding nitigriti

What he's saying is you can't build a career from uber. Uber should be an hustle to make ends meet, and then move on..

The guy you people are quoting had a job before he joined uber. If he wants to apply for another job, can he put uber driving on his cv?

So if you go for an interview let's say "customer care position" which is one among the most outsourced position in the USA right now and you have experience partnering with Uber for like 4yrs and which is verifiable even with comments from riders you think the white man won't give you the job

Black man mentality is so low. Listen, no experience we human encounter in life is a waste. Value ever opportunity that comes your way because it will build you for your tomorrow

God forbid. Back in 2017, one can net 50k on weekends alone, should I have left my low paying job for Uber? NO!
We preach diverse sources of income and yet...
I work for a private structured organization then, yet I had time. Site work basically resumes by 9/10am for consultants and ends by 5pm. We go on break with the contractors for one hour. Do you know what I can achieve between 7am and 10am and from 12-1pm or from 5pm upwards towards my certification? Bros no be only civil servants get time.
