Goodevening my peeps, first i will like to apologize for my inconsistency, i promise to work on it (na the work ooo).As promised earlier i promised to talk about the cooling system of the modern ICE(internal combustion engine). The cooling system consist of, the radiator, radiator fan, heater core, coolant temperature sensor, coolant, thermostat, the radiator hoses etc to mention a few. Taking a car a customer brought to us as a case study. Customer: "My car is overheating, if i just enter small hold up like this, boom!!!!!my car starts overheating and you no Lagos naw 2 minutes everywhere don burst". Oga:"Eleyi gidi gon oooo, ordinary "small" hold up, this Lagos sef everywhere hold up but dont worry we got you ".Now we dive into the cooling system, we start troubleshooting it, but before i go on a lets have a little talk on how the cooling system of a modern car works. Now when you turn your car on and combustion begins heat is generated (friction plus fire, so much heat) but this heat is usefull to ensure that your car is functioning at the optimum performance level and emisson level, so at this stage the thermostat is closed allowing heat to build within the engine bearing in mind that the coolant jackets are filled up with coolant (cooling is not necessary now), now the engine is building heat, for every ICE there is a specific temperature that it can tolerate and after that temperature the engine is working haphazardly and more of such strain will eventually damage the ICE,so when the engine gets to the required temperature the thermostats opens letting out hot coolant into the radiator at this point the cool coolant inside the radiator goes into the ICE and cools it and the hot coolant goes into the radiator for cooling. This is basically how the cooling system of an ICE works. |

Bro..... this is my advice......be a specialist. Don't try to be a general auto mechanic..... specialize in cooling systems....don't be jack of all trades.... master this one. Over heating has been and would always be a problem..... besides what you are taught.... go to you tube .... there is sooo much more to learn there and to help you solve more complicated issues. Later on... you can have your own shop and stock parts related to cooling systems only. You would never be short of customers. |

Nice work engr,I like the fact that you left the first place for a more certified repair shop. Believe me instead of spending 3 years or more to learn at the first place,it will take you less to learn at your new place, base on the fact that you will learn the theory and practical aspect. My advice to you is that don't stop there, don't depend on your boss for every information,be ready to spend more to acquire more knowledge, the world is evolving so is technology. Getting the knowledge is one thing, and getting the best tools to enable you do your job well is another thing. Don't stop learning. To others who want to learn please and please, save enough money to learn from a good shop,we have so many kazeem around, and if you're a kazeem pls upgrade yourself,it is important. |

my distinguish viewers, first of all happy new year to everyone. secondly my apologies for not updating this thread that was due to the fact that i did not have the right device to operate but all glory to God, i have gotten a laptop now, i promise to be much more consistent. special shoutout to Musadanladi thanks for following my thread. I really appreciate. UPDATE: so far i have learnt so many things (4 months), from misfire to cooling system, to troubleshooting A/C system e.t.c but today i will be talking about misfire. MISFIRE misfire occur in a internal combustion engine when combustion does not occur properly. It could be as a result of incomplete combustion,air-fuel mixture is not accurate, spark leak e.t.c. . Misfire makes the engine of a car shake abnormally, a lot of times it affects the inside of the car too (too much vibration). common symptom of misfire are: abnormal vibration in the cabin, the engine too, uneven sound from the engine ,in extreme cases the engine will start vibrating vigorously, loss of power by the engine, hard start e.t.c. Common culprit that are inspected while trying to diagnose misfire are the plugs and the coils. When the car is running rich (too much fuel is been supplied by the injector) such car will misfire, because the air fuel mixture is not proper (proper air-fuel mixture is 14.7:1).When a misfire is detected and confirmed using a scanner the next step is to inspect the spark plugs and the coils, the coil might be demanded or the spark plug is leaking spark. After checking the two (PLUG AND COIL) and they are ok, you then consider some other factors: 1)Did you recently do a tune up on your vehicle, because during tune a lot of spirit from the carburetor cleaner gets into the combustion chamber, this will cause the system to misfire for some time (2 weeks) before becoming normal. 2)Is the head gasket leaking or bad. One of the function of the head gasket is to seal in the elements(air, fuel and spark) needed for combustion to take place in the combustion chamber. once the head gasket is faulty or blown e.t.c, the engine will no longer be able to seal air, spark and fuel and that will make the car misfire. 3)Possibly a damaged engine. a lot of time when we have a damaged engine the vehicle will definitely misfire. such damage could be a crack in the combustion chamber, or a leak in the combustion chamber,e.t.c 4) A car will misfire if the vehicle is running rich(too much fuel) or lean(too much air) in the combustion chamber. Now we will be talking about how the vehicle ecu or brain box (engine control unit) can cause a car to misfire but before we go on i will like to highlight the two inputs that is required by the ecu to determine if the vehicle will misfire or not. 1)Mafs-maf stands for mass air flow sensor. This sensor monitors the rate at which air comes into the intake manifold and transmits its input to the ecu for further processing. Now the ecu is a computer and what do computers do?? a computer receives input data, processes this input data and give out output data in form of instruction to the actuators for them to carry out a specific action. 2)Maps- the maps stands for manifold absolute pressure sensor both the mafs and the maps perform the similar duty but the maps monitors the pressure at which the air is going into the combustion chamber , the information from this sensor is also transmitted to the vehicle ecu in other for the ecu to process the data it gets from the maps and uses this information to determine the kind of information that will be given to the actuator which are the injectors and the throttle mouth in this case. In the case of a faulty or spoilt mafs or maps the engine will definitely misfire because the information from this two sensors determine how fast or slow the injectors which receives instruction from the ecu will pulse out gas into the combustion chamber and how wide the throttle mouth will open. In a case whereby the ecu is faulty the car will definitely misfire. CASE STUDY:Toyota camry 2008 (muscle) black smoke emission plus vibration. so, this parfticular client came to the workshop with a complaint that his car is emitting black smoke and the car is also vibrating (symptoms of a car that is running rich) we plugged our scanner checked for misfire and misfire was present on all cylinder, we removed the plugs from the engine and discovered that the insulator tips along with the side electrode and center electrode were black (another symptom of a car running rich), definitely the injectors were receiving the wrong instruction, we tested the mafs and the maps and they were alright, our next suspect was the ecu, the ecu was changed and boom the problem was solved (no black smoke) we scanned the car and we discovered it was no longer running rich.In this case the ecu was the problem. SOLUTION A misfire can be resolved using the following method: 1)Changing the spark plug when they are damaged. 2)Changing the coil in a case where it bad too. 3)Changing the cars engine. 4)changing the ecu.
