when I discover the secret to human actions.

Events inspire me to write. Eg the loss of a loved one. .... I lost my dad weeks ago, grief has got me writing a lot.
When I write it eases off the heavy load in my heart.

Joy also makes me write. Eg. My husband was dropped from a good paying job. Reason Company gave was that they were downsizing, he was called back after 3years. I was overjoyed, so I wrote an article.
I haven’t really explored that part of me. I have been writing for my own satisfaction.
Moods in general inspire writing, sometimes betrayal, etc.
Few friends that have been opportune to read some of my write ups always exclaim how good a writer I am. For me, it is a form of Stress Relief.

Everything... There's inspiration in everything happening around someone with a literary mind.

I get loads of inspiration from music (not kpangolo music we consume here), movies, my daily interaction with people in the course of consulting.

Well, I guess exploration. Since my birth, life has been throwing me from one end of Southwest to the other.
So, I grew up dreaming worlds outside the southwest. The first of its kind was when I was 11 and for days, the only thing I could think of was a vehicle that moved underground. To truly explore it, I had to write it out.
Some novels like Harry Potter helped but they were very few I could get. I just got tired of regular folks in regular places. That's why I must confess Chike and the River got interesting because Chike left his former world.
Then Chike and Obi. I enjoyed exploring the forest with her.
I guess I began to write as a form of exploration for my imagined world, to take myself into places I don't know I'll go or exist in. I just love exploring secluded life like
-those living in a forest
- life of Islanders
- Outcasts
- Paranomic worlds
- Dyspotian worlds

Anything to just get me out of the regular day to day life. That's why my first work was Destiny and the 7 Mountains- A book I finished but hated because the story idea wasn't mine. Then, I hopped on two prince that travelled. Another tale we were told. The underground car was the first story that sparked several other inspirations like the desire to correct norms, the need to give hope and so many reasons.

I've rambled enough.

I am not a playwright; I am a copywriter.

What inspires me to wrote is the desire to see my clients succeed.

More importantly, I love it when they pay and give me positive reviews

waohhhhhhh, I am inspired. I'm an upcoming writer. I have been on a particular story for almost two years now and I can't seem to finish it, partly because I am very lazy and also because I feel should work on my grammar.

Really, I have good stories in my head but procrastination, laziness and my deficiency in grammatical usage has been my holding me back.
After reading what you wrote up there, I am inspired to go back to writing and also try to work on my grammar. And if you have any useful tips, please share.

The only way to excel at anything is to continuously do it.

When you write, if you find that anything sounds or reads odd, Google the phrase.

Also, a great way to expand your vocabulary is to have a thearasus dictionary handy. There are a lot of synonyms for everyday words that you can infuse to your writing.

Finally, read as much books as you can in your niche. Generally, I advocate just reading enough quality articles regardless of the niche.

Some writers excel in only one niche or aren't very versatile. Find the area you excel most in, and concentrate all your talent in it. Better to be master of one, then be a jack of all trades.

I really can't tell, honestly. Stories just pop into my head and I write. But the more I write a story, the better the plots get. Also, I'm a fan of surprise endings; therefore, no matter what story I write, I try my best to infuse the surprise.

Perhaps I can say my inspiration is drawn from the fact that I want to prove to the world that Nigerians can also come up with great storylines.

I used to read a lot of novels while growing up. It got to a stage where I started feeling that I could write better stories than some of the novels I read. But I was scared of writing. I could only read, I didn't believe I could write. Indeed, I couldn't speak anything grammatically-accurate. At a time, I debated about the idea of writing in my local language, but hell, I suck at that too. Yet, the stories forming in my head couldn't leave me alone.

Ironically, I was the best English Language student in my class, but I couldn't speak the language perfectly. Funny but true. I didn't believe in myself. I saw writing a story as a very big deal. I didn't know I had to start from somewhere.

The ideas in my head eventually took over. I started with a very short story, an incomplete one. I showed it to some of my friends, but they didn't show interest in it because they weren't accustomed to reading stories. The story went without a single person reading it. But that first attempt helped me a lot. It helped me to start believing in myself. It inspired me to go push further. If I could write something like that, then I should be able to write something better.

I started my first novel in 2007 and ended it in 2010. It was my most fulfilling three years. Nobody knew I was writing a story. I would lock myself in my room and write. I finished it within the first year, of course, but I spent the remaining two years polishing and repolishing it, adding and subtracting ideas. When I was done. I locked it away in my shelf. No one knew about it. I told nobody.

In 2011, I had a girlfriend. Lol! She encouraged me further. I came out of my shell and told her I wrote a story. I think it just came out unexpectedly. She wasn't a novel-reader either, I had no reason to tell her. But it slipped out. As soon as I said it, she got interested. She begged me to read it to her. I was scared. A lot of things bothered me. She might be bored like my initial friends. The last thing I wanted to do was to shove what I had done down the throats of people who gave no damn. But she continued begging me to read it to her. I decided that I would give her the manuscript to read herself. I was sure that she would drop it after the first page like my other friends had done with my initial short story. Besides, I didn't have the best handwriting in the world.

She insisted that I read it to her. She wanted something romantic, hearing me read to her was her idea of a perfect romance. Perhaps she thought I wrote a romantic story. But what I wrote wasn't Romance, it was Detective Mystery. Surely, she would sleep off, or just ask me to shut up, please!

I started reading while she lay on my laps. Oh Lord! For hours, I was reading the story to her. She listened to me quietly. When I thought she had gone to sleep, she would ask me a few questions just to show that she was following. By the time I got to a few chapters, she was no longer laying her head on my laps, she was sitting and resting her head on my shoulder and watching my mouth. Lol! She was probably seeing the characters and actions from my speech. Halfway, she was totally enthralled. By the time I finished, she had cried and laughed and jumped with happiness. She confessed that it was the best story she had ever read. From the way she said it, I believed her.

That statement is what has been keeping me going till today. She believed in me when I didn't even believe in myself. Although I am not yet a complete writer, I still have a lot to learn; but I owe everything I am today to her because she is my first reader. We are separated but we are still very good friends.

After that, I started nursing the idea of typing the story. I couldn't afford to pay to get it typed, I would go anywhere I could find a free PC to type. To cut everything short, I discovered Nairaland shortly after typing it in 2012. There were a lot of like-minded people here posting their stories. I was initially scared that my story would be stolen if I posted it online. After much thoughts, I decided to give it a go.

Mehn! It was one of the best decisions I had made. Almost everyone who read it loved it. They all inspired me. It became such a sensational NL work that a lot of other people plagiarised it on their various platforms. Someone even publicly claim ownership to the work. Lol! To be honest, I never thought I would write any book after that one. I only wrote it to prove that I could write a better story than some of these bestselling writers. But the raves from Nairaland inspired me to write a sequel, which a lot of people told me was even crazier than the first book.

I apologise for this long epistle. Lol! I just want to tell you that anyone who desires to become a writer can be. There's nothing stopping you except you. You have to believe in yourself. If I can do it, then you can definitely do it. Forget about the fear of being mocked for errors. You will only get better. If you have that story in your head, WRITE IT! However, whichever, whenever!

Well novels aren't my thing, but I have an intense admiration for people who can creatively put thought into writing. That being said, I've always loved the skill of writing raps. I do feel I've got the flair for it but I just can't find it in me to finish a song or fully flesh out the ideas that swirm endlessly in my mind.

Sometimes I wonder if my insistence on one day breaking my duck is just nothing more than trying to grasp water. Maybe the rhymes are just incoherent gibberish. But I'm not ready to call it quits just yet

There I sat on the third row by the edge watching Jide starring at his beautiful bride, both grinning to one another as they stood by the foot of the altar ready to be committed in vows.

“I promise to love you, to be your best friend, to respect and support you, to be patient with you, to work together with you to achieve our goals, to accept you unconditionally and to share my life with...” Agnes vow in the presence of the congregation was cut short by sudden burst of wind which took everyone by surprise. the atmosphere in the church began to darken. everyone grumbling and murmuring in fear.
There from behind of the hall appeared something strange, it was a reptile, an anaconda, one big enough to swallow two grown men crawling slowly towards the altar in it shinning scales and it red glowing eyes, its tongue flipping. I stared petrified in horror just like everyone else, unable to speak or move, we could only watch as the serpent crawled it way to the altar to transform into something else, into a woman. OMG! I couldn't believe who it was, Cynthia...Jide's ex.

the above narration came into my head this Saturday attending my friend's wedding, Jide. now am even planning to develop the story into a crazy love‐horror tale.
Inspiration for me is like air, it's everywhere for me and attacks me every seconds. I have got over a hundred unpublished mind blowing stories in my PC. and countless jolted titles. my biggest problem is time to develop the stories and money to have them published into the kind of standard I soooo wish.

my biggest gift to me by God Almighty is my weird imagination in every environment I find myself. I never get bored being alone. I create my own movies inside my head and just laugh or cry to it. Unlike Larrysun, my babe no dey send me at all, she wouldn't even read a lines from it, all she cares about is the realities around her. Fun lady I must say, she is missing out.

one thing that inspires me is thoughts (as an introvert, I often tell people I live my life inside my head...), which is kinda what writing is all about-imagination. So, an idea pops in my head and I pick up my phone and quickly type a phrase in my note so I don't forget when I'm ready to write.
I'm a very sarcastic person but often I find that to respond sarcastically may be offensive so I write about it instead. I also write because I've decided that to get anything done, I need to be intentional about it. I have lots, I mean lots of drafts in my WPS office and phone notebook and I always find a way to weave and idea into another one and make some progress. I haven't completed any book yet but I'm aiming at doing so very soon.

Another thing is reading other authors. Lately, I've read Diana Evans(26a), Chimamanda(Americanah,The thing around your neck,Half of a yellow sun-I only just read it this year,lol. They all inspired me. Anne Lamott's Bird by bird especially made me realize that the struggle to write is not only experienced by amateurs and is actually the very essence of writing. For when you finally have a beautiful story after your shitty first drafts, that is writing. May we reach the peak of writing and tell our stories in ways that shed light on ourselves and 'our Nigeria'.

ps: the responses on this thread are so reassuring, I mean it feels good to read about some challenges I experience while trying to write - the grammar challenge. I thought I'm the only one who feels like my language often sounds very basic, mediocre...
