That’s Nigeria’s number one bane, people will think corruption should come first, but illiteracy is actually the problem. From the illiterate people in power whose sole aim is to milk her populace dry, to the illiterate people who keeps voting in the same set of old people

Common sense is different from being educated! What they're using is common sense!

As you say, the same effect has come to anyone that align himself with such set. I think we all are in it because all of us are ruled by one of them.

Nigeria would have gone far under regional system if not Ironsi and his kinsmen like Okorocha that wants to dominate every region..

Now the so called "illiterates" have taken advantage of the system Easterners created. He should shut up biko.

It appears the northern leaders are not bothered by it.

Yes most of them. Only that Emir Sanusi has been speaking against illiteracy especially amongst the girls.. And they're after him for questioning the status quo. He's being witch hunted for it.

its not only in the north. its in all parts of the country but in a different form. any time someone sees you in walking on the street with a laptop(like me walking about for over 6 hours looking for light to charge) they think you are a yahoo boy. imagine!!!
if u carry laptop in your hand, u are a yahoo boy but if you carry money, u are a rich man

How are you going to set up so many schools? How are you going to ensure that you get well-trained teachers? Who is going to pay for the buildings, their maintenance and the staff? How will you equip these schools? What role will digital media play in the classroom?

Honestly, I am so tired of politicians telling us what needs to be done without presenting a proper plan on how to do it and a budget plan. Even my child can tell you why education is important. Tell us something new. Show us that you have potential and reasonable and realistic solutions. You are paid to do it.

[Oga, I bet to disagree. I have lived in kd a bit, visited many northern cities. This is a fact. The world has gone far far away living the north behind. Remember Pakistan, indonisia, morroco, and many other countries are Muslims, they are far more educated in whatever language. Spoken English alone is not bases of education. Education is to broaden the mind, thinking. The ruling class in the north are not serious to educate their people so they can sheepishly follow them.

The quality of the discourse in my local bar is higher than what and how they discuss issues in parliament. They are not worth a kobo. None of them from no party. Fish brains.

Firstly im a hausa guy from Kaduna, He is right but this shouldn't be an avenue to make mockery of the north, the question is what is the way forward? If poverty can be reduced I think illiteracy won't be a problem anymore, I'm a northerner and one funny thing about our people is their I don't care attitude, giving birth to kids that you dont have the financial viability to train, for some the primary and secondary objective is to feed, quality education is an added bonus. Its not just about sending kids to school, as a parent you check what your kid is being taught and assess his progress, but given the fact that most parent send their wards to government schools where they pay little or no amount for tuition, they don't care about their education and how their kids are coping , all they know is my child is in school and that is what's wrong about the north. But thank God today there's noticeable changes in the number of students going to schools most especially the females, I believe the next generation will be better. The wise trace their steps and amend their errors when criticized, only the fools will get defensive and keep languishing in self delusion

Illiteracy in the north has a direct negative impact in other parts of the country - Senator Rochas Okorocha (video)

Rochas Okorocha, the Senator representing Imo West Senatorial District in the red chamber has raised an alarm over the high level of illiteracy in the northern part of the country.

The former Imo State Governor who expressed fear of having lawmakers from the North who cannot address the senate chamber in English, asked for an intervention in the educational sector in the region.

Okorocha also stated that the illiteracy in the northern region has a direct impact in other parts of the country.

But this "BA TURENSHI PEOPLE OF NORTHERN NIGERIA" like political power too much.

Despite their lack of education they know how to strategies and keep power in the north.

See the way they dislodge Ex-President Jonathan from his presidential seat in Abuja.

They even went as far as his state, Bayelsa state to claim power.
