You whole argument is based on the premise that the killers cannot make any mistakes. You don't even know this family and the first thing that comes to mind is the husband did it, why not that the killers probably left him alone and he locked himself to call the police or that he pretended to have died and the killers took off or maybe even the killers took off because they had no time. The first thing that comes to your mind is the Hollywood theme of the husband killed her, making life miserable for a likely innocent man.
