Coming into Nigeria with an expired Nigerian passport is not advisable. Amadioha may favour you and nothing will happen OR those immigration guys will use you and cook egusi soup.

In October 2015, I witnessed a situation like this at the arrival lounge MMIA; a woman in the queue came in with a valid US passport and an expired Nigerian passport. The immigration woman didn't stamp her in. All her ranting and barking only complicated the issue. Later, a senior immigration official came and led the woman away. I don't know what happened thereafter.

I am in this predicament.
I am in the UK
Came in with my US passport.
I missed my flight back to the US territory 5 days ago I left which is not in mainland USA (Guam) (close to the Philipines) but is considered a U.S State occupies primarily by USA military.
My Nigerian passport expires in May but I don’t want to go back to the USA.
Am I able to buy a one way ticket from Gatwick or Heathrow to Lagos with my Naija passport and answer Query when I get to Nigeria?

Hello, I know it's been a while but someone I know is in this same issue. This person has a US green card. How did you later leave the country? Did you have to renew your Nigerian passport before leaving?

I had no issue at all leaving the US. When I was checking in my luggages, I gave the agent my Nigerian passport first, then she requested for my US passport. Then she said your Nigerian passport is expired. I told her, online it says I can travel with expired Nigerian passport as long as I have a valid foreign passport. She was like "oh that is right, it says so right here on the computer" she was point to where it says so on her computer. I had a connected flight in Paris, she just told me i don't need my Nigerian passport anymore until I reach Nigeria that I should just use my US passport. I used my US passport in Paris with no issues, no questions were ask.

When I got to Nigeria, i had a small issue because i had the old passport, not the new ecowa one. The worker acted all confused and started talking to me like I am child. "what are you doing here?" "where is your mummy?" then one of them was like, so you know this is an expired passport, i said yes but online it says I can enter with expired Nigerian passport as long as I have a valid foreign passport. he left me alone to go talk to another person. after 5 minutes. the guy came and he was like you can't enter the country with expired passport, we will have to send you back. he was just asking all these nonsense questions like I am a teenager(maybe cos i look like one). The vibe I got from the 2 minutes conversation was he wanted me to give him money in order for me to get clearance into the country, without explicitly asking for it. Me, i just stood there looking dumb and pretended like i did not understand what he was implying. After 2 minutes, he was like I will let you enter the country but just make sure you renew your passport before leaving.

US will not give you any issues as long as you have a valid US passport or another valid foreign passport to accompanying your expired Nigerian passport . In Nigeria, they can't turn you away, if they imply bribery, you can just play dumb like me.

OP there is something called emergency travel certificate (ETC). That's what people with expired passports use.

There are people who are in situation where they don’t have enough time to get ETC. As of 2015, you can travel to Nigeria with an expired Nigerian passport as long as you accompany it with a valid foreign passport. But you MUST renew your Nigerian passport while in Nigeria or else they will NOT let you out of the country. Unless the Nigerian govt has changed its rule recently, it is a valid statement. I did it and I know 4 other people who have done it.

You can get ETC same day u r traveling - nothing like not enough time. Also it is not must u renew your passport while in Nigeria - u can give them SMALL bribe at the airport (best way to do it) or get exit visa.

You can get an Emergency Travel Certificate from USor Better still come to Nigeria with US PASSPORT and do VISA ON ARRIVAL

Booked my ticket 2 months back but just realized that at my travel date, my passport would be 1 day short of 6 months.
I called the airline and they told me: "from our side, Nigerians are allowed to travel to Nigeria with expired passport, even still, your passport would still be valid. But, you need to confirm with the embassy"

Now this answer is altogether confusing.

You are free to travel with it. Even with an expired passport, you would be allowed to enter. Nigeria often does not deny her citizens entry into their own country. You are a citizen - your expired passport is proof of it expired or valid. Also, as long as you'd be returning to Germany within your remaining validity period (the immigration officials will need to see how you were able to enter in the first place), you'll be fine. In place of an expired passport, one can always obtain an emergency travel certificate (ETC) valid for one round trip to/fro Nigeria. No need to worry.
