lucky you! i served or I'm serving in the west, precisely, and my stay there has changed my perception of the yorubas. Before i was posted to the west, infact, i desired to be posted to the west, but getting there the harsh treatment i and other non- yoruba corpers, especially the Igbos, have received is so terrible. I mean, their hatred for the igbos is so much, such that they may like you at first meeting but once you reveal that you are Igbo, they hate you immediately. serving in a yoruba village as an Igbo corper is terrible, i mean we came here to serve you guys, we are just corpers, why the hatred? they would treat other yoruba corpers better than you, finding every reason to discredit you, before you say I'm biased in my generalisation, i experienced this, from the motor park, to my PPA and even in the copers lodge where you see segregation between the yoruba and non yoruba corpers. Honestly i used to love the yorubas but my experience here has made me detest having anything to do with them. even the hausas are more welcoming and accomodating.
continue with your lies. you igbos keep seeing hatred everywhere you go, which is a reflection of how you percieve life, that is the reason u always claim other Nigerians hate and discriminate against you. u claim Northerners hate u, SS tribes hate u, u even claim non-nigerians hate u. na only una waka come!

Sponsor me? Are you mad?

What kind of ignorance is this? That someone lives in Ekiti, probably born there and have Yoruba friends on Facebook means he’s Yoruba?

That surname is not Yoruba, therefore he is not Yoruba QED.

Gidado is Yoruba, although the name sounds like an adopted (sobriquet) Hausa name. I am pure Yoruba and have childhood friends that bear same name. He is even from one of the royal families in my hometown. Funny enough. Its kind of a Muslim name.

I hope this helps

One thing I know for sure is that as someone from another tribe living in igboland, you'll live peacefully and sleep with both eyes closed because nobody is going to discriminate against you because you are not Igbo

Another person said here right now that he served in Nnewi and all he saw was the industriousness of Igbos which he admired. I still maintain that you're a tribalist who didn't say what he saw. You're a liar!!!

I don't remember telling anyone the class I belong to, you called me a racist, nationalist and tribalist na your palava. it's no tribalism when your kinsmen who have never step out of their villages say thrash about Oshogbo and ogbomosho dem never visit, dummy? but it's when someone that stayed in Anambra for 1½ yr to state what he observed

you're a lying and primitive tribalist. Thank God you've confirmed whom I had suspected you to be. You took Oshogbo weed, and it's not good for your brain. A youth corps member who served in Nnewi said the truth that Igbo people he saw in Nnewi are industrious. He said it even on this very thread. It's only a tribalist like you will say what he didn't see. Did it ever occur to you that it's Yoruba girls and married women that sleep around more? Most Yoruba ladies don't stick to one husband. They'll marry today and divorce tomorrow and then remarry. The rate of divorce by Yoruba women is higher than by Igbo women. Go to magistrate courts in Yoruba and Igbo lands and you'll discover what I'm saying that it's higher in Yorubaland. Igando court doesn't rest for your people who want to divorce and remarry. In that case, the rate of HIV is higher in your women than in Igbo women. I'm from Anambra. Most people that die in Anambra are old people, and you think your lies will not be thrown to the dustbin.

Sad truth....but it will never be admitted. I served in osun. My first movement as an adult to the west. My first experience started form ore self. Next was camp at ede. Then my ppa at laro middle school 2 okefia in Oshogbo. Didn't even know that we were referred to as ynamiri until I got to that school. I was teaching my students one day about career choices and told them that if they studied hard enough and pass their exams they will one day become a corpse member like I am. Then I asked if they would like to serve in the east and I got a resounding "NOOOOOO!!!". The thing shock me self. I asked why and some said they don't like the east, some said they would like to serve in Ogun or neighboring Yoruba states. I was wondering to myself how children less than 13yrs of age could get such ideas even without traveling to the east. Got to find out that most of their perception of the east comes from African magic(Note: they mostly watch African magic Yoruba in osun, the normal African magic is persived as Igbo channel). And there is this perception among them that every one outside west towards the east is Igbo, even amongst their learned ones. They refer to calabar and akwa ibom people as Igbo.

Learnt a lot from the west sha. My service year was cool.

Reference:
I can appreciate a lot about what he says. I am not from the East but since starting operations there almost a decade ago I have been positivrly impacted by the peoples of that region. The long and short of the whole thing is that. The Igbos are the closest thing to any quest to develop, to move forward and I speak from an individual and communal perspective.

I think the average Nigerian needs to spend sometime there to complete a cycle of mental upliftment. Honestly my sojourn there has given me a competitive edge in business and professional conduct, a spirit of enterprise, innovation and the 'can do' spirit. There is just nothing beyond them. You either meet up or get left behind.

Not saying that there are no flaws. There are but these are caused in the main by institutional failure, many years of successive weak governments which I know is a fallout of the civil war. These have been blown far out of proportion by those with extreme prejudice. The typical Easterner has no issues at all. I have a very long list of clients and contemporaries from there and I have never been profiled. If you are competent they will respect you utterly and draw close to you to learn.

I think this country is missing a lot with the way Easterners have and are being treated. If ij my little corner I can see the potentials and have benefitted immensely from the kinetics, I can be certain when I say that the Igbos are more than two plugs in the four cylinder engine of development. Cylinders that are not serviced, Hence not surprising, this country just cannot seem to be able to move forward.
This is the honest truth many are not willing to acknowledge.
A typical Igbo man is business oriented,so if you're a man of your words,he will love you more than his younger/elder brother who is dubious cos he knows he stands to gain more from a straightforward stranger than a dubious brother.
Sadly,I can't say that for the yorubas and I'm talking from 1st hand experience I had long b4 nairaland sef, having served in the yoruba speaking part of Kogi and working with them here in the north.
We'd have cultural dance, cooking etc competition, only the yorubas will protest when the Igbo groups deservedly win.You go to their markets/shops you notice the person's mien changes to hostility once he knows you are Igbo.
Here in my workplace,I had to ask 2 of my colleagues one day "looks like you believe God created d Igbos and gave them extra sense" cos they keeps talking about "Igbo sense".The northerners we work with will loot and pillage d association money, they'd keep quiet but if an Igbo person makes a genuine expenditure, only the yorubas will query it till the last kobo.
What should've been a healthy competition from there has turned to outright hatred.
An Igbo man "no send" any particular person or tribe,in fact if there is,it is the hausa/Fulani muslim cos of their cyclical bloodletting which started even b4 d civil war cos there's barely any 10yrs they don't bring batches of corpses from the north cos of I useless reason or d other eg Denmark cartoon saga.
In spite of that, you rarely hear of violence specifically targeted at hausas or any group at in the east.

I had this same stereotypes until I was posted to Jigawa State long ago. It was fabulous. In all honesty, the disunity is caused by our leaders for their selfish gains! Keep the masses divided so they will not unite and dislodge us

You made some very thoughtful points.

The disunity and biases are hugely evident in the SS where you find more people who have never left their region for anywhere else. Here, you see different shapes and sizes of stereotypes flying in the air....concocted lies and half truths that have become so real and factual litter the corners of towns and cities of the SS.

The truth is, only less than 30% of Nigerians have actually been privileged to criss-cross the regions / cultures of the country, to sufficiently experience, appreciate and internalize her cultural diversity. It is a lot easier to deal with people when you understand their cultures and values.

The foregoing is better appreciated when you engage with widely traveled, open minded Nigerians, as they tend to be more empathetic, tolerant, objective, fair and understanding.

Stories like this deserve the frontpage. It's a known fact that ignorance and fear engender hatred and discrimination. When you get to know your neighbor, all that defenses and stereotypes are dismantled and abandoned. As citizens, we have more in common that unites us than we have differences. I hope this serves as a lesson to let others realize that traveling out of your comfort zone is a better teacher than what you could learn in a classroom setting. The breadth of knowledge that this young man had gained would put him ahead of his peers because he knows how to navigate and relate to both cultures, Igbo and Yoruba. Good story!
