dawnomike:Liberians were never colonized. And they have no connection with Britain. Liberians are African Americans who chose to return to Africa. |

ignis:Not to state the obvious - I studied and work in the UK. I am aware that some schools in the UK will allow exceptions - perhaps by providing a letter from your Undergraduate Uni that your course was taught entirely in English and with at least a C6 grade in English (Waec). This does not mean the condition is not there. There is no University in the World where Nigeria is listed as English competent. You will either have to provide English language tests - or they grant you an exception. That’s exactly my point. |

itsme01:Found another site that says Nigeria is 29th. It's hard to tell. Educated vs uneducated African-britsh-english speakers will have different varieties. I'm Nigerian and I've heard both Nigerians and ghanians speak great English. |

crash12345:There has been this fallacy about Ghanaians' spoken English being the correct version in Africa that has gone on for too long which is based on nothing tangible other than tales told to children to make them feel good. Many Nigerians, probably without good self-esteem, also peddle this tale around. First of all, the Merriam Webster dictionary that you referenced is not British. It is a foremost American English dictionary. This is enough to invalidate your points above, because they are based on a false premise. The argument becomes even more watery when you make the Oxford English dictionary a reference. Secondly, the BBC is an authority in spoken English, with many of its correspondents and news readers carefully selected across the world to make listeners understand the language. Listening to BBC anchors will quickly persuade anyone that Ghanaians' doktas (doctors), nes (nurse) are not spoken by anyone else apart from Ghanaians. You would notice that many atimes the BBC goes into extra length to literally write the words being spoken on the screen in order to assist the viewers to make a meaning of what some non-native English speakers are saying. While this is commonly applied to speakers from countries like Liberia for instance, they have had to use the service for some Ghanaian English speakers as well. That goes to show you that the so-called Ghanaian accent may not be understood beyond Accra, Takoradi and other Ghanaian towns and villages. Thirdly, also note that many Ghanaians that have properly assimilated into the real modern native English speaking countries (not the 14th Century colonial empire) like Britain do not have (or significantly play down) that funny accent. The late Kofi Anan spoke the English that many people understood. It is important to state that Queen Elizabeth doesn't pronounce doctor as dokta or dakta, neither does she pronounce nurse as nes. TO THE TOPIC A study credited to the World Linguistic Society claims that Uganda tops the rest of the countries in Africa as the best English speaking country in the continent. Be that as it may, whilst it may be difficult to rate the best African English speakers fairly, there are some notable Africans (Nigerians) that speak good English which the native speakers and non-native speakers can understand any day, any night. Chief Emeka Anyaoku, Prof. Wole Soyinka, Gen Yakubu Gowon and Late Premier Abubakar Tafawa Balewa are examples. Also, you can hear and understand clearly when people from the middle-belt speak English - especially those from Plateau area - because of the activities of the English speaking missionaries and NGOs over decades. |
