The police officer who won Nigeria's first Olympic gold, Chioma Ajunwa turns 49 today. Chioma Ajunwa-Opara, MON (born 25 December 1970) – also known as Chioma Ajunwa – is a Nigerian former athlete who specialised in the long jump. After various setbacks in her career she achieved fame when she became the first athlete in her country to win an Olympic gold medal at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, and to date remains Nigeria's only individual Olympic gold medalist. Throwback Interview: How I Got My Miracle Babies After Many Years – Chioma Ajunwa “I was married for many years and when the child was not forthcoming, I was worried all the time, because I know that if you don’t have a child, your marriage will not be that strong. “In Igboland there’s a saying that, ‘a woman that does not have a child, her seat is kept outside. That was bothering me, though as a believer I wasn’t that desperate over it. I wouldn’t have a devilish child. I strongly believed in God that at His appointed time, it will come because I know he never fails. “I did not ever entertain the thought that I could be barren. As a pastor, my husband was always consoling me, telling me to leave everything to God. In my mind I said ‘I hear. Tomorrow you will go and marry another person, thank you very much!’ “When I was pregnant I asked God for so many things; the number one thing was that if this should become a reality, I promised God I will return the children to Him and I will give a giant offering. I was worried all the time, because I know that if you don’t have a child, your marriage will not be that strong. “In Igboland there’s a saying that, ‘a woman that does not have a child, her seat is kept outsideOf the many inane cultural and societal practices and maxims we have in Nigeria, this is one of those that gets me sick. We have made it a life time achievement to get married, such that people become too desperate to tie the knot, often with the wrong person, spending your life savings in wanton ceremonies whose memory would fade with the next wedding at the weekend. Then couples begin the race to have a child, it shouldn't even be heard of that you guys decided to just enjoy 5years of sex and try for babies thereafter. Old age. Whenever I look at pictures of old people in their prime and now looking weak and friable makes me pounder much about life. If only we realise how fast this so called old age is approaching we won't be making some of the wrong choices we are making today or even invest time on inconsequential things like pre marital sex, cheating, making fast and illegitimate money etc. Because few years down the line, those things won't even matter to you. And reflecting back on the energy you invested pursuing those things will certainly make you realise it doesn't worth the stress. 16 Likes 4 Shares
