RedboneSmith:You're not correct Mr. An empire goes beyond conquering a people and taking tribute from them. That's my point. You have to look at the definition of what an empire is. I don't have to school people on what an empire is. Like I said earlier, Oyo might have been a great Kingdom who troubled her neighbours but it didn't get to the state of an empire. There's something that differentiates an empire from a kingdom. That is what Oyo lacked. Different nations United under a single person to become a single political unit where all the constituent nations bear the identity of their conqueror is what makes an empire. The footprints are there for everyone to see. Benin achieved this feat everyone can see her footprint all over the lands they once controlled. Where is Oyos footprint in non-Yoruba lands? Non. You'll need to prove these footprints exist to convince me. I've been trying to get the ebook of Archibald Danzel without success. Can you kindly upload excerpts here for our consumption? 1 Like |

BuhariAdvocate: In fact, it wasn't until very recently that I met a friend on an online platform who made me realize that the Yoruba influence went even as far as Ivory Coast. Their profile on the online platform reads: an Ivorian Yoruba, and that got me curious a little even though I "reconciled" that their family must have been originally Nigerian. On inquiry, they confirmed that their family was never Nigerian. They noted that the information passed down from their "ancestors" is that their roots is in what is known today as Nigeria. They speak Yoruba language quite well, and that was jaw-dropping and eye-opening for me. Perhaps Drogba is truly Derogba as has been widely claimed, though jokingly, by many. 7 Likes 1 Share |

Obalufon:Lol. Which West African history? You're not verse in history like am neither are you detailed up to being specific about words like I am. If you can clearly define both words (empire and Kingdom), you will know that you and your likes have been arguing blindly. The centre of power in an empire is always the emperor and his word is final. He's usually like a God among men. All empires are usually controlled by a smaller group who conquer larger areas and are able to unite all these different people into a single entity with the various people seeing themselves as being under the umbrella of their conquerors. This is what Benin was able to accomplish. Till date, the Oba of Benin still commands respect despite the demise of the great empire they once hard. Imagine a tiny six to seven LGA people dominating more lands and people they had. That's impressive. See the Ottoman empire led by the Turks. Roman Empire led by tiny Rome. Mongolian empire led by Genghis Khan covering more than ten times his original territory. Coming to Africa, we see the Songhai empire from one tiny area of Mali leading the Songhai Empire. The Ashanti empire with the Asante people of Kumasi uniting other Akan groups and non Akan neighbours to become a regional force. Their footprint in Ghana till date is the popular Twi language that is wide spread all over the country. Where's that of Oyo? A kingdom on the other hand, has a king who's power is subject to some kingmakers and council of chiefs. He's not regarded as a god. Great kingdoms fight and defeat their neighbours and demand tributes from the them but are not able to unite these defeated neighbours into one people to bear a United name. This is what Oyo achieved. This is why they don't have any footprint outside Yorubaland. Compare the size of Oyo itself with the tiny lands of the Fon in Dahomey. What about the lands of the Nupe; how big is it? My criticism is borne out my conviction and never out of prejudice or jealousy. I'm above pettiness. |

Obalufon:Lol at ancestral lineage stool. Oba Akiolu knows his ancestry and it's neither Oyo nor Ife. Imagine the distance from Benin to Eko. Lol. You can only sell this your story to those who don't know history. |

Yujin: Oyo kingdom that highly disorganized and were continually trashed by dahomey female warrior and Fulani, they should be ashamed to mention it amongst if it even existed from the yoruba account it looks like state under the oyo kingdom were politically autonomous no war was fought to bring the vassals under it ,it was strictly on social gathering the oyo kingdom was weak militarily because they were not used to war ,when the alafin wanted to extends is kingdom to another yoruba kingdom under it,that's how everything went south and a war broke out the new political power after the war rested on ibadan were they attempted to wage war on ekiti a benin vassal state at then ,words was sent to the oba of benin ,and thousands of soldier's were disperse to ekiti to fight the new political power of the yorubas which ekiti won in the war At the early 18c ogendegbe from ijesha ventured to edo north with his fierced warriors he had already conquered some part of edo north when the oba get to here of it he disperse warriors from edo central esan warriors who waged ogendegbe at edo north and defeated him and his army his head was later brought to benin |
