We spend so much on vehicles without taking cognizance of how much it has consumed over the years..

Example on just a single car:
Estimate...
Purchase - N2.5m
Servicing (1year) - N150k (mobile 1)
carwash, tires pumps and patches, paintings - N150k
Tires 1st set - N80k
Fueling - N520,000 at N10k/week
transmission service - N30k (T4 oil)
Police, lastma, bribes and fines - N100k
Mechanics and minor repairs - N100k

Total = N3.630m an added N1.130m (excluding engine or transmission change and other major accidents.

Police, LASTMA and fines at 100k?

Do you take a one-way once every month?

I find this thread discouraging.....

Please if you have the resources to get a car, do that without delay.... Atleast for convenience sake.

There's nothing cool about trekking and jumping from one public transport to another in this country.

Some cases might require 2k, some might require 25k plus overnight park etc.. it's just varies..

Kindly state those cases

If your particulars are not expired, your license is valid, you obey traffic rules and signs, and you wear a seat belt, what fine exactly will you pay for?

You are analyzing it with a closed mind.. you hit someone, police intervenes, you would either bribe or pay, you have a flat on the express, lastma gets involved.. you would part with sth, otherwise you get towed

I have had flats few times on highways. And all I do is find a safe place to park. Read signs if there are any, and no one will obtain you

And I don't understand why you should be hitting someone. If you hit someone's car, the insurance should take care of it(third party or comprehensive).

And if you hit a human being few times in a year, you need medical help

With this country's battered public transport system, owning a car is as as basic a need as food, shelter and clothing...

The only problem is that most people don't cut their coat according to their cloth... If the cost of maintaining your car is so heavy on your pocket that you sometimes contemplate trekking instead, then you either have a money-pit car or your income simply cannot support owning that class of car... Best thing you can do at that stage is to change to a less problematic/cheaper to maintain car

I owned a Honda Accord 1994 model for about 7 years... And I never spent up to 50k per year for maintenance and repairs while I had it... Minus fuel of course since I can't expect the poor car to run on pure water grin

There are cheap, reliable and easy to maintain cars out there for every person in nearly every income bracket... You can't be earning 100k monthly and expect to be able to maintain an infinity G35 without going bankrupt.... Shoe get size grin

So as per the op's question..... I do not know how much I may have saved if I did not own a car because I do not know how much calamity I would have gotten into if I did not own a car

My brother I have owned and maintained car when I was jobless, when I was earning 19800 as a corper and when hustling was the only job available to omo boy.

The way is not to buy a Bugatti with a budget of Kia Rio, nothing good comes out of it.

From January 2019 to December 2019 the only thing I did on my sienna was

2 oil change, one oil change was a gift from gazzuzz 15k

exhaust repair 2500

brake pads 8k

transmission oil 14k

and regular fueling

I didn't spend 100k on the car in a year and for 6years I have only had 1 highway breakdown due to fuel pump failure and no lastma or police obtained me though I paid 1500 to the area boys that help me push the car to safety grin

You should examine the alternative forgone. Which is the true cost of ownership. Let me state some:
A. A student and a friend died because of a drunken driver who was sleeping at the wheels.
B. I tried Ibadan to Lagos by car at Iwo road leaving my car at home, the throng of beggars ( no offense intended which I could have managed) and later one my passenger neighbor started those type of special hospital ward coughing.... Nobody tell me make I go back house go carry my car!

C. Is it unhygienic interiors of public transportations buses..... Hygiene is non negotiable bro.

D. Or the time wasting.... Have you tried leaving Abuja after 3 PM? Then you'll appreciate owning your own car....

E. Or Lagos... The time you'll spend waiting for your car to get filled up...a private vehicle would have gotten halfway through the journey..

You're over exaggerating a lot of things.

You should spend less than 25k each time you service your car. To spend 150k on service, you must have driven for 30000 miles. The vast majority of Nigerians don't drive that much.

Also, nobody buys 4 sets of tires every year. Transmission is not meant to be serviced yearly, some vehicles have transmissions that are not meant to be serviced

Except the vehicle was impounded by customs, I don't see anyone spending N100,000 a year on fines and bribes.

The only part that's agreeable to an extent is the N100,000 for repairs. Every other is grossly exaggerated.

Big man, All points correct. Save for this one. My M112 took exactly 8 litres of oil, for that I usually buy two cans. Cost only came down when I switched to 15w50 - and there are a lot more Mercs out there gulping oil like water.

Servicing (1year) - N150k (mobile 1) N45,000 for two oil changes in a year with filter and labour all inclusive
carwash, tires pumps and patches, paintings - N150k N3,000. I wash myself. My hands aren't broken. Vacuum only when kids mess up the car.
Tires 1st set - N80k N12,000 for 2018 18rim tire
Fueling - N520,000 at N10k/week N400,000 for an SUV
transmission service - N30k (T4 oil) Not due yet
Police, lastma, bribes and fines - N100k N15,000 for airport towing and N5,000 for custom. Nothing for police and FRSC as everything is intact.
Mechanics and minor repairs - N100k N48,000 for rotor and starter motor change.

Total = N3.630m an added N1.130m (excluding engine or transmission change and other major accidents.
Too lazy to do the maths but much cheaper than you make it out to be.

I have a full family of five and it's much cheaper and safer travelling with my car than paying transport fare. On the average, I travel every two or three months. Fueling and other costs is usually exactly half of transport fare.

So for example, Lagos to Onitsha is 30k for all but 15k fuel takes me to Onitsha in comfort

I believe if what you are doing with the car doesn't generate money for its maintenance, think twice about owing a car.

When next you think about how much the car is chopping from you, ask yourself if you would have made the money you are about to spend if the car was not there

Yeah, very true. Had a bike accident 2 years ago, was so shaken that it took me time to drive a vehicle. In short, I don't drive cars I'm not used to. I drive a Tacoma, IS250, 4runner, Corolla, Picnic, W211, M35 (anyone that's available) at home but will struggle to drive another person's same car. I need to get comfortable in a vehicle before driving it. I guess its mental, saw a shrink once and the babe bin too fine, so I no fit focus for the task at hand.
