It’s the first day in January and with it comes the mid-season transfer window, a period the continent’s biggest clubs are expected to be back in the business of buying, selling and loaning.

Nigeria born talents, as always, are being targeted by top clubs and here are some of the juiciest bits of transfer rumours involving the country’s stars.

Leicester City’s midfield ace Wilfred Ndidi has been one of the Premier League’s standout performer and it’s no surprise that the former Genk hero is the subject of a cash-plus-player deal from Arsenal. (Daily Mail)

Up until the start of December, it was almost a given that Kelechi Iheanacho would be leaving Leicester City at least on a temporary deal considering his limited chances with the Foxes.

But after a blistering end to 2019, Brendan Rodgers would be unwise to let the former Manchester City striker depart in January even with the likes of Aston Villa dangling mega millions.

It may be difficult to prise Victor Osimhen away from Lille this window but Tottenham are among those who may still try to tempt the 13-goal hero to England. (SkySports)

Chelsea are reportedly in the market for a backup to top striker Tammy Abraham and it seems Bordeaux’s Nigeria youngster Josh Maja is the man the Blues may swoop on in the coming days. (The Sun)

Frank Lampard’s side could also make a big-money move for Villarreal forward Samuel Chukwueze to ease their attacking shortage. (Football Espana)

Emmanuel Dennis sprung to prominence this term after bagging a brace at the Santiago Bernabeu and it appears Manchester United are interested in taking the Club Brugge striker to the Old Trafford. (90 min)

Cyriel Dessers may only have joined Heracles Almelo in the summer but after netting 12 league goals for the mid tier Dutch side, the Belgian-Nigeria may be ready for another move with Cagliari lurking. (Soccernet Nigeria)

But fifa truly need to have a look in on this player switch palaver. I think the right thing to do is making a law where players that falls in this issue must be played in a certain number of competitive games and minutes in certain period of time maybe 1 year

If that is not achieved the player can easily switch to the other nation that needs him most. African nations re the one losing out in this switch of allegiance issue

Manchester United’s search for extra firepower up front is set to take a new direction after Erling Haaland signed for Dortmund.

One option could be Timo Werner, while another very smart potential signing could be Lille’s Victor Osimhen.

The Nigerian is one of the best young strikers in football, here is a look at three reasons why United should make him a top priority…

Osimhen has been tipped for the top ever since finishing as top scorer at the under-17 World Cup.

Still only 21-years-old, he is thriving for Lille, scoring 13 goals for the French side already this season.

10 of these have come in Ligue 1, and that is just one fewer than Kylian Mbappe, and one more than Mauro Icardi.

He is among the top six goalscorers in Europe aged 25 or under in Europe’s top five leagues, narrowly trailing United’s Marcus Rashford.

At just 21, Osimhen has great potential to get even better. He is a great fit for this young United team.

Liverpool’s reported desire to sign him [Express] is further evidence of his talent considering their recent success in the transfer market.

Lille signed Osimhen in the summer from Belgian side Charleroi for a reported £10 million.

They could probably charge double or treble that now and turn a tidy profit.

But if United wait too long, Osimhen will have a heavy £50 million or £60 million value placed on him.

He already has 13 goals this season and if he surpasses 25 and continues to score at the same pace as Kylian Mbappe in the league, his reputation will soar.

SkySports also report Tottenham and Chelsea are eyeing the striker and more competition is expected if he remains on Lille’s books by next summer.

Buying now would still see United land Osimhen for a knock down fee, compared to what he could be worth in six months or a year’s time.

United’s player involvement at Euro 2020 could leave our top strikers tired out at the start of next season.

Marcus Rashford will be starring for England, and on current form, Anthony Martial will force his way into the France set up.

Mason Greenwood could even gatecrash the England squad if he builds on his tally of eight goals for the season so far.

While there will be years in which a summer African Nations tournament takes Osimhen away from United, 2020 is not one of them.

He has a summer off from an international tournament and United may need a fully rested frontman to take the pressure off Rashford and co early next season.

A fast start in 2020/21 is essential and looking ahead, Osimhen may be the ideal striker to provide it, especially if he signs in January and acclimatises to the Premier League.

We Africans need to develop our football and STOP relying on foreign born players. I see it as reaping where we did not sow. The idea that we need them is irritating as it smacks of poverty, colonialism, mental slavery and a very slavish attitude. We Africans need to focus on developing our young players. The problem is we do not know how to refine our young u-17 players into competent players. That can be handled if they sign for developmental clubs. Begging every tom, dick and harry to play for us is humiliating and condescending.
Black man, when will you rely on yourself?
Let us develop our Akinkunmi Amoo and Samson Tijani and be proud of them. Foreing born should be an after thought and not the main thing. There are people on this nairaland who think that Foreing born players are the best thing in the world and it is irritating. Africa has to go beyond this

Even developed countries get players that were born elsewhere. USA have players developed in Germany and England. Thiago Motta played for Italy but he was born in Brazil. Mario Fernandes is a Brazilian playing for Russia. Diego Costa is a Brazilian player playing for Spain

These so called foreign born are simply children of people like us who live outside Nigeria. They are Nigerians.

azin I no understand Could you believe I was actually debating weather I should go watch man u or stay home, but the lure of watching artetas arsenal(4 d first time)and hopefully Pogba was tempting so I went to the viewing center...

Around d 30 minutes mark, i was so uninterested that i was surfing nairaland I swear...

Martial and rashford=zero...

The James boy can only run dazall, he can't dribble or turn or anything, just run, and then they rough handle him anyhow = 1

I've never liked Fred, he shouldnt be playing for us. Him and perreira should look for a team of their level...

Harry Maguire (people wondering how he became skipo) very very stiff... Maybe the 80 Milla was a scam

Degea nko? I don't even know... We have a bunch of crappy players, I never even mention lingard

Mtcheeew

Something is really wrong somewhere, I left the place around the 74th minute, I was just bored, super bored...

And I envy united fans who manages to watch our every game...
