Facebook is one of the most popular and biggest social media in existence. Unfortunately, it is also one of the most unsafe places to be on the internet. What makes Facebook unsafe? How can you be safe from scam?

Case 1

PROBLEM:

You share too much unknowingly.

Facebook allows you to share information in piecemeal. Little by little, personal information you shared overtime might accumulate to significantly make you vulnerable to scam.

SOLUTION:

Before you click "post" make conscious appraisal of what you are about to share. Can you share such information with strangers in real life? Remember, Facebook is just another real life.

Case 2

PROBLEM:

You have little or no control of whatever you have shared.

Facebook allows third parties to use your data. Any individual, even non friends, can use information on your wall. Some ads might actually contain malware.

SOLUTION:

Carefully and consciously adjust your privacy settings to reveals less about you. Constantly revisit your privacy settings to suit your current understanding. Do not make posts just to impress people you hardly know, your safety is Paramount.

Case 3

PROBLEM:

Most profiles you see on Facebook are fake, scammers are behind them. Some beautiful female profile pictures you see belong to scammers. Their only objective is to psych you and scam you.

SOLUTION:

When you receive a friend request from a model-like person, check their profile, if you see only few pictures, or just few posts, or the account is newly registered, or almost all their friends are opposite sex, please decline. Note that some deliberately do not allow non friends to see their friends or their pictures in the privacy settings, so you must be discrete here and use sound judgment.

Case 4

PROBLEM:

Your real friends could be used to get you.

When your friend's account is hacked, the scammer might leverage on the relationship that you both share to scam you by making some financial demands or introducing fraudulent business to you.

SOLUTION:

Before you make any financial move, be sure to call your friend or relative involved or use any other medium aside Facebook to confirm from them.

Case 5

PROBLEM:

Your account can be hacked.

There are many ways of hacking your Facebook. We will discuss more about it in our subsequent posts, but be aware that when your account is hacked, the hacker takes control of your account and can use it for whatever purpose that suites him.

SOLUTION:

Choose your password wisely. Don't use easy to guess password. Change password from time to time. A strong password should contain alphabets, numerals and other characters. Avoid using your phone number, date of birth, generally significant dates like independent date etc.

Please feel free to share your thought on the comment section.
