Right Of Reply: Christians Enjoy More Holidays Than Muslims In Nigeria by Seun2019(op):
I write to reply to a statement titled "Christians Enjoy More Holidays Than Muslims In Nigeria" allegedly released on Friday, 3rd January 2020, by the Muslim Rights Concern Group (MURIC)

The statement, which was signed by its director "Professor" Ishaq Akintola was said to be in reaction "to claims made by CAN that Christians are being persecuted in the country."

To say I was embarrassed and disappointed by the statement by the so-called professor will be an understatement. It was not only insensitive, it is an attempt to trivialised an allegation as weighty as persecution.

For God sake, how can public holiday be a sensible response to a weighty allegation of persecution as alleged by CAN? I would have expected the Muslim group to sympathise with their Christian counterpart, itemise areas where they are also persecuted (if any) and call on the government to do something urgently in these areas with an attempt to unite the nation.

I will not waste your time by dwelling on the allegation of persecution as the Christian Association of Nigeria has done justice to this. I will only enlighten the professor (If at all he is one) on public holidays in Nigeria since that is his main concern as shown in his statement.

There are eleven (11) public holidays currently recognised by the Federal Government of Nigeria. Most of these were handed over to us by the colonial masters.

The public holidays are:

1. New Year's Day (1 day)
2. Good Friday (1 day)
3. Easter Monday (1 day)
4. Labour Day (1 day)
5. Eid al-Fitr (2 days)
6. Democracy Day (1 day)
7. Eid al-Adha (2 days)
8. Independence Day (1 day)
9. Prophet Mohammed Birthday (1 day)
10. Christmas Day (1 day)
11. Boxing Day (1 day)

Out of these, about seven can be described as religion holidays. They are numbers 2, 3, 5, 7, 9, 10 and 11.

Whereas Nos. 2, 3, 10 and 11 (four days) are Christian holidays, No's. 5, 7 and 9 (five days) are Muslim holidays.

New year's day was never a religion holiday!

In Nigeria, we operate Gregorian calendar which is the calendar used in most part of the world. Although the Gregorian calendar was introduced by Pope Gregory XIII, the purpose was to correct the mistake of Julius Caesar calendar which miscalculated the length of the solar year by 11 minutes, therefore making the calendar to fall out of sync with the seasons.

Though the Julian calendar included an extra day in February every four years to correct this, it was discovered that the addition of so many days made the calendar slightly too long.

Gregorian calendar devised a variation that adds leap days in years divisible by four, unless the year is also divisible by 100. If the year is also divisible by 400, a leap day is added regardless.

While this formula may sound confusing, it did resolve the lag created by Caesar’s earlier scheme- almost.

At the initial stage, many countries rejected the calendar and refused to operate it. It was however discovered later that it was the most perfect calendar of all the ones available in the world, and hence its acceptability by many nations.

This calendar was handed over to us by Britain, which is our colonial master.

New year's day was introduced as a work-free day to commemorate the beginning of Gregorian year and it is enjoyed by all and sundry, irrespective of religion affliction.

So, how can that be described as Christian holiday?

Let us even pretend for a while that New Year's day is Christian holiday. What this implies is that Christians have five days as holiday in a year, while their Muslim counterparts also enjoy five days as holiday.

Except our dear "professor" has chosen to be ignorant and mischievous, I do not see how difficult it was for him to know that two days each are declared for eid-al fitri and eid-al Adha in Nigeria.

As a Yoruba person, I have been watching the antics of "Professor" Akintola since President Buhari came to power and I
am forced to say that, it is either he is looking for appointment or he is a religion fanatic, which is strange in Yorubaland.

Yorubas are arguably the most liberal tribe in Nigeria, when it comes to the issue of religion. There is no family where you will not find Christians and Muslims, even as siblings. We have never seen religion as an issue in our culture. That is why many Muslim men have Christians as wives and vice-versa. I can not but find it rather worrisome and disturbing the agenda of this negative and divisive man.

It is high time Yoruba leaders called this religion fanatic masquerading as pressure group leader, to order.

We do not want religion war in Yorubaland, nay Nigeria.

Thank you.

The man is insensitive. So he couldn't address the persecution issue CAN raised or even popular ones like govt of states building mosques or obstruction of public roads when praying.

These are the people who use their titles and grammar to confuse multitudes into believing Christianity is the opposite of Islam or out to get them.
They have been made to believe that Christianity/Christians are their own devils/his agents respectively. Sad. His professor title should be properly checked.
