1. Eligibility for Your Proposed Course of Study

Before you sign up for a course, check to see if you are eligible.
This is so so important. There are many courses more than 130 for postgraduate programs but find out if youre eligible for the one you chose.

How?

Go to Unilag pg website or ask around in this place and i will give you the answer you need.
Dont take anything for granted.

For example.

If you have an HND, you are limited to just 3 courses:

1. MBA

2. Project Management

3. Biomedical Engineering

And not many people would want to read these courses.

so what do you do?

HND is mostly a no-no.

But all BSC are welcomed, even if you got your BSC from a state school or private University.

Also graduates from NOUN can also apply to Unilag Pg programme

Disqualification:

I know a lot of people who scored above the cut-off point in various exams conducted in the last 7 years and were disqualified- just because they didnt meet the school requirement.

E.g Bsc Engineering cannot apply for Msc Computer Science directly, you should first apply via pgd else you will be denied.

Likewise, so many restrictions. You need to know and be informed adequately so you dont make a mistake.

A lady called me last year and asked if she could apply for MSC in Engineering with her PGD certificate from another school?

I told her Unilag frowns at PGD from other schools. She was shocked.

She then said, ok let her use her HND cert.

I told her no way. she later said but UI allows such.

I told her I know, but that is Unilag for you.

So its better you know your eligibility status.

I've a current case of one of my students who just checked his result and he scored 70+ but will be denied admission because he was not qualified with his BSC course - the guy is almost weeping!

The solution I propose is to find the courses out there you can do with your Bsc degree.

and i will tell you for free, there are so many courses that each degree has access to, dont be tied to one.

These are powerful combos you could do if only you have the right info, and i will be sharing some of them with you on this thread.

Take Bsc Economics For example

BSc Economics graduates has loads of courses they can combined with their Bsc and make a hot selling combo out of it.

Before you chose a course, look at the job market, and the trends, dont stick to your old ways or what Jamb forced you to read.

Go for your passion and your purpose.

Do what you love.

With the right counsel you can make good judgement.
Having said that seek proper info from mentors, its the easiest path to glory....

enjoy!

Bsc Economics hot combo

plus MBA
plus IRPM
pgd finance
plus Dev Finance
plus Risk Mgt
plus MPIA
plus MILR
plus Accounting
plus MDSS
plus Pgd Computer Science
plus Msc Economics
plus Insurance
plus Actuarial Science
plus Operations Research
plus Operations and Production Mgt
plus Organizational Behavior
plus Management
plus MMP
plus Sociology
plus PGDE
plus Marketing
plus MILD
plus MELS

Let me know if you have any problem in choosing a course or combining your course with your experience.
Would gladly help out.

Tell nguru55, let him know...even polytechnics and colleges of education are short of lecturers. That's why you see a university don lecturing in two to three institutions and don't want to register in the federal government IPPIS of a thing.

If you like develop and upgrade yourself pending when opportunity will come and if you wish, do otherwise and when opportunity set in, you start jumping up and down looking for where to borrow a certificate or where to forge one.

The lecturers that won't join IPPIS, or the ones sleeping with ladies for marks or the ones enlogating the students length of study. Common, Education is scam in this country.

These days there are various reasons you would want to get a higher degree

9 reasons are

1. Career purposes
You can further your studies to expand you're view and insight in your chosen career.

2. Job opportunities

A master degree increases your job chances in this thick competitive environment.

3. For promotion purposes

This is a given especially for those in government circles

4. For travelling purposes

Travelling to Canada and other European countries which are point based gives more point if you have a master degree

5. For Skill

Some master courses helps you acquire additional skills to whatever you have currently

6. For Status

Yes I know some people will argue
But there is a class thing when you stand with your friends who has master degrees and you still struggling with BSC

7. Political Appointments
We are getting there. Not too far when if you don't have a master degree you cannot be in the position of leadership.

8. To change career
To change a. Career... A postgraduate degree can be very helpful.

9. To correct your Bsc Result

For 3rd class and 2.2 graduate. A master degree is a must if you want to stay relevant in your field.

Having said all these it's common wisdom to grow every way you can in your chosen profession.

A common mistake I see around.

Most graduates seek Postgraduate degree based on their First degree Background alone.

Its an error.

Its not compulsory that you must read in masters level what you read in undergrad level.

The world is evolving.

careers are shifting.

look at your interests and your career, then

find a microscopic aspect you can dominate or become a big player very well.

Less is more these days.

Gone are the days of the big 4 courses.

These days, its the little foxes that controls the game.

Four things you should think about as you chose your Pg courses are:

a. Think Application

b. Think Independence

c. Think Diversification

d. Think Monetization

Careers of yesterday are giving way to more applicable-solution oriented careers in the current Eco-space.

My simple advise - Dont read anything you cannot apply.

Employers are getting smart and strict - demands are higher

The job market demand more... than paper qualification.

Application is the new king.

What you should do?

Research how your Bsc course can be applied in any organization to create growth and change and see if you can further in that line.

Find the angle in your industry, that your Bsc degree can explore and make the four criteria above happen.

dont read a course just because you want to have a master degree, that is a shallow reason.

Purpose is the mother of exploits.

that is the real deal going forward in 2020.

Peace.

This is beautiful and serves as a morale boost for me. I for one had a BEng Electrical and Electronics Engineering and a first-class too but looking forward I realized I want to pursue a career in finance rather than engineering, cos of my newly found desire to open a financial institution in the long run, hence my desire to do PGD in finance and move on to masters in finance and MBA in finance

Please, what is the likelihood that I won't find myself wanting in this field given the short timing as compared to 4years of undergraduate studies? is it even obtainable in the labor market? can I get a job as a financial officer with PGD and masters in finance but with Engineering degree cert? these and many more are my questions.

Please help me clarify them. Thank you

Hello Joiceee,

Although unilag dont accept HND in so many courses, lucky enough you can apply for direct masters with your HND albeit in limited courses.
I have 3 recommendations for you:

1. do a pgd in biomedical engineering which you qualify for and then use that to apply for any Msc of your choice in science which I guess you are looking for

2. Use your HND degree to go straight for Msc biomedical engineering

3. You go for MBA directly with your HND

whichever you decide, make sure its what you really want to do.

All the best.

Hi wealthyhenry

youre going for a career change.

its noble of you.

your first degree Engineering gives you a big advantage.

Many engineering students who change to Accounting/Finance clears their ICAN papers in record time even before some from that background. this is due to their maths background.

the difficult part of finance is more of maths and inference. The NPVs, Costing, Amortization, which if you have gone through integral calculus, with all those Lagrange formulas and all those big electrical dynamos equations and weird formulas...

definitely, it will still be challenging, but will be a piece of cake if you are an average engineering student.

trust me, I have experienced in both worlds, the difference is miles apart.

Hello Freddy94 ,

Those are big courses.

I said so, because of competition.
They are among the Top 10 Pg courses that is highly sought after.

Both are good depending on your career path.

any you choose will be okay.

Note: MPIA - Master in Public and International Affairs is also known as Masters of International Relations in most schools.

Both of them are part time courses ONLY.
both have same fees - N112k per year

Thanks for your reply. that was morale-boosting.

Please, what is the likelihood that I won't find myself wanting in this field given the short timing as compared to 4years of undergraduate studies? is it even obtainable in the labor market? can I get a job as a financial officer with PGD and masters in finance but with Engineering degree cert? these and many more are my questions.

And I'm going for Finance without the Accounting part.

All the best.

would I still be able to do my pHD with the results from your recommendations?

Hello, I have my first degree in food science but want to switch to the management line preferably public health management or business management.
Do I need to get a PGD first before my MSc?
