Firstly, What is Iwa Akwa?

 The Iwa akwa, also known as 'cloth wearing', means an initiation into manhood. It is a ceremony that entails the passage of a young boy transforming into a full- fledged man; and it is highly valued, respected and usually practiced by the people of Ehime Mbano, Ihitte Uboma, Obowo and Ahiazu Mbaise Local government areas, all in Imo state. The participants are usually mates of a certain age grade. The wearing of cloths has a symbolic representation. It is a symbol of coverage. It is assumed that they (initiates) were naked before but they are now covered.

Before I forget. The person "Wearing the cloth" is a senior friend, cousin, colleague and buddy. He's just almost everything to me. So base on those settings, I couldn't help but had to forfeit my programs just to be there for him.

This very ceremony happened in Ihitte Uboma LGA, IMO State.

2: It's usually a two-day program, but for some traditional reasons, preparations and merriments had to start a day before the D-days.

Below is the provided cow for ceremony. He's the first to do this in his extended family for the past 25years, so the joy and happiness had to lead to killing of cow decision.

4: Just like I initially said. It's a two-day programmed ceremony; “the first day holds the initiation where the previous celebrants come to show their seniority to the younger ones, who are billed to be initiated into manhood. They assemble the prospective initiates at the Village Square;

8: The guy on dread is representing his brother who is based abroad, but because he didn't bring it to their notice before surfacing there, they had to come for him with full force.

11: These uniformed ones will be doing theirs by 2024. By tradition requirements, they are to drag the rope and ensure it doesn't touch the celebrants and the next celebrants. It's very stressful.

18: The end of the initiation into adulthood make the beginning of another ceremony, the initiates are now accepted to partake in the recognized activities of adults in the community. After this, the young men and women are sent out into the ogbor where their family members are waiting to cheer them up. The running and shouts of joy is that of excitement to show that the celebrants are now adults. The newly proclaimed man or woman is carried shoulder high with joy and excitement for a great achievement to his family house, where further refreshment and entertainment are extended to visitors.

My dear Ihitte-Uboma

Brings back long memories of when I visited Ihitte-Uboma for the burial of a friend's husband.
She couldn't freely receive me there so we managed to drive to neighboring Obowo, she was still inhibited so we had to drive all the way down to Umuopara in Umuahia where she gave me debbé as appreciation for the sacrifice of coming.

We almost crashed at '7-and-half' on our way back if not for God who cautioned her late husband and told him that he had no reason to be jealous since death had done them part.

Nice town aside from those SARS that always stay around Ishinweke waylaying AKTC and Abia Line buses.
